professor_nyembo The Negro leagues were United States professional baseball leagues comprising teams predominantly made up of African Americans. During the late 1800s blacks were not being accepted into the major and minor baseball leagues, therefore they formed their own professional teams. However, economic realities, travel and lodging difficulties posed by segregation, and the logistics of travel made it hard to establishment of any solid baseball circuit. In 1885, The Babylon Black Panthers were the first black professional baseball team. After the integration of professional baseball the talent level on the Negro League teams weakened tremendously, also the interest of black fans was quickly drawn away from the Negro Leagues as they focused their interest on the performance of Jackie Robinson and other black pioneers in the major leagues. The Negro National League folded after the 1948 season. The last All-Star game was held in 1962, and by 1966 the Indianapolis Clowns were the last Negro league team still playing. The Clowns continued to play exhibition games into the 1980s, but as a humorous sideshow rather than a competitive sport.

umair.a.b Jack Roosevelt "Jackie" Robinson (January 31, 1919 – October 24, 1972) was an American Major League #Baseball (MLB) second baseman who became the first African American to play in the major leagues in the modern era. Robinson broke the baseball color line when the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at first base on April 15, 1947. The Dodgers, by playing Robinson, ended racial segregation that had relegated black players to the #Negro leagues since the 1880s.Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
Robinson had an exceptional 10-year baseball career. He was the recipient of the inaugural MLB Rookie of the Year Award in 1947, was an All-Star for six consecutive seasons from 1949 through 1954, and won the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1949—the first black player so honored.Robinson played in six #WorldSeries and contributed to the #Dodgers' 1955 World Series championship. In 1997, #MLB "universally" retired his uniform number, 42, across all major league teams; he was the first pro athlete in any sport to be so honored. MLB also initiated and adopted for the first time on April 15, 2004, a new annual tradition, "Jackie Robinson Day", on which every player on every team wears #42 on April 15. #jackierobinson #AfroAmerican
