oscarmoviebuff #斷了氣》#Breathless (1960 | Directed by Jean-Luc Godard)

When one watch BREATHLESS for the first time today, he probably heard all the historical status and impact the film had made, would it be the same as someone watching it 55 years ago? Probably not. All the innovation may not share the same freshness today, since many imitations followed may became our first encounter instead. Yet the film still surpassed everything it inspired, the rawness and energy appeared on every frame are powerful, deep down it's not only the love for cinema, it's also the mind to challenge cinema. It's obvious the feature debut of Godard is influenced by American cinema, all the gangster genre setup, Jean-Paul Belmondo mimicking Humphrey Bogart, Jean Seberg was as deadly as a female fatale at the end of story. Yet at the same time, he took the essences only and wrote it with a new cinematic language. The famous "jump cut" technique sliced through time and space like no other films before it, making BREATHLESS more playful than experimental. Revisiting BREATHLESS again since my last viewing 5 years ago, I still found it as a film with coolness and perfection in its own term. Yes it's still bound by narrative unlike any late Godard's films, making it more viewer-friendly maybe. But it's such a perfect first stop for someone new to Godard, and to view his films in chronological order, just like witnessing one of the cinematic evolution like no one was.

Grade: A+

kenstaffey The Sorbonne was founded around 1200 and was part of the Catholic Church. Several future popes studied there and other notable alumni include Marie Curie, Thomas Aquinas, Francois Mitterrand, and Jean-Luc Godard. The school was shut down during the revolution and reopened in 1896. In 1970 the school, known as the University of Paris, was divided into 13 different schools with a handful continuing the Sorbonne name, which comes from the College De Sorbonne, founded in 1257 by Robert de Sorbon. 5h

oscarmoviebuff Une femme est une femme / A Woman Is a Woman (1961 | Directed by Jean-Luc Godard)

Watching A WOMAN IS A WOMAN for the first time, kind of remind me how cheerful and playful #Godard film once was. It anticipated his later masterpiece and one of my favorite PIERROT LE FOU, both have a colorful scheme in production design and cinematography by Raoul Coutard. This time Godard got his hand on the sound mixing, fragmentizing Michel Legrand's music, using silence at some unexpected places, with the main character played by Anna Karina singing without music, audiences may need time to adjust to this "neorealist musical". But all you need is feel the rhythm, and the film would just sing by itself. All the 3 leads have great chemistry together, Jean-Claude Brialy and Jean-Paul Belmondo are charming as the male leads, but the attention definitely focused on Anna Karina, who won Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival, she became almost unreplaceable in Godard film since then. Sadly the Criterion DVD is long out of print, that just decrease the film's exposure wildly. Overall I regard the film as Godard's small masterpiece, one shall not be missed.
