The hip hinge, technically flexion and extension of the hip, is one of the most important movements to master.

A good hinge is a source of power that can be applied in a variety of settings, from sports to everyday life. A bad hinge, on the other hand, one that's limited by tight and weak muscles, can hamper performance and lead to injury.

A stiff leg deadlift is almost a pure hip hinge. The spine is kept in a neutral position, the knees are "soft" but not actively flexing and extending, and the primary movers are some of the largest muscles of the body, the glutes and hamstrings.

Stiff leg deadlifts can be performed with dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells, medicine balls, pretty much anything you can hold onto. Generally speaking however, you should start light and work the weight up slowly and gradually.

Regarding range of motion, spinal stability, what everyone likes to call "core" stability, dictates how far you should go. Stop before you lose the natural curve of your lumbar spine.

abadifit This is what happens when you're waiting for dinner to finish cooking. Have seen this performed at the gym on a special apparatus but recreated it using the kitchen counter because you should never stop training your glutes!

A well developed gluteal group is not only critical for athletic movements, but also helps protect the lumbar spine. The combination of overdeveloped quads and weak posterior chain musculature can lead to knee instability as well. The glutes also make your jeans fit better! 🏻 Regardless of how you do them, make sure you focus on glute contraction and avoid hyperextension of the spine. Focus on pressing the pelvis down as the legs raise. Add an external rotation to help target the lower glute fibers (both varieties shown above). Wipe down your counters when you're done.
