world_at_war_44 A New Age Fighter
_______________
Pictured here is the Me 262V3, the conventional undercarriage fitted tail-sitting third prototype "PC+UC". Flown by 27 year old legendary test pilot Fritz Wendel on July 18, 1942, it was the first pure jet powered Me 262 to fly marking a major milestone in its development. Test pilots like Wendel were breaking new ground and their courage can not be overstated. Not only was he testing a new aircraft, but a whole new mode of propulsion, and one that wasn't yet perfected.

Many have asked including myself, could the Me 262 have being fielded in service earlier than 1944? The emphatic answer is NO.

Even though the project had been conceived before WW2 started, the technology behind it was still very new, experimental, and far from maturing into anything practically functional, let alone ready for war. On top of that was the official lack of interest in the project from Third Reich hierarchy. Jumping ahead to the summer of 1942, and despite Wendel's first historic flight, testing continued for another year. Airframe refinements were completed by the end of 1942, but the Jumo 004 axial flow turbojet engines were still problematic, and were destined never to be perfected during the war given the technology of the day.
It wasn't until mid-late 1943 that official interest in the Me 262 picked up, and with the tide of the war turning against Germany these new "super weapons" suddenly took on a whole new significance. A last hope.
The combat-ready Me 262 didn't enter production until early 1944, and it was a lack of engines that delayed that first batch. So, once again, it was destined to be a beautifully built but somewhat temperamental machine, and a legend in the annals of aviation history, but not a war winner.|

  •   motoramic55 Many 24's and 17's fell victims ... Formation flying just didn't protect them from the ME262 but the 51's (little friends) found a way ... Awesome all your feeds @world_at_war_44 12h
  •   world_at_war_44 @manlyleonard True about Hitler's interference but it was not ready to enter mass production before 1944 regardless. Lack of engines prevented this, this was due - as I stated - to development problems and lack of official interest prior to 1943. Don't forget that less than half actually built saw action in the end, and even if more had been built most would not have seen action as they simply lacked the trained crews to operate them - and not to mention fuel! It was never destined to turn the tide of the war, this is a myth. 12h
  •   jambothehut Not sure if it's the same model, but they have one of the last few flying 262's down at an airport in Texas. 12h
  •   world_at_war_44 @jambothehut those flying Me 262s are new builds, A and B models, not the same as the V3. 12h
  •   philosopherzach @world_at_war_44 @manlyleonard we also have to take into account that if they Luftwaffe had received mass 262's by 1944 their experienced pilots where dwindling very fast and replacements were rushed through their training and thrown into the cannon fodder. With replacement pilots having to fly the 262's the allies would've made very quick work of them because it doesn't take much for a 262 to get slow enough to be killed by pursuing allied aircraft. 12h
  •   captnono The 262s in Texas are not flying yet , but are patched together from multiple aircraft. They are supposedly at Meacham field,FTW Texas. 11h
  •   world_at_war_44 @captnono so they are patched-up original aircraft in Texas? Not those new rebuilds? 11h
  •   adrianmmmmm So many wonderful " what if's" during WWII. What if the British Gov had funded Whittle. The Gloucester/Meteor would have been flying prior to 1939. Would the Germans have invaded If so!! 9h

uispeccoll A request from @dittrickmusuem who wanted to see some strange medical texts! Even though the majority of medical related materials reside in our partner library, we have a couple of newer oddities. Here are some images from Physiology of Motion Demonstrated by Means of Electrical Stimulation and Clinical Observation and Applied to the Study of Paralysis and Deformities, published in 1948.
