richard_bernardin The #Guggenheim is probably one of my favorite places in #NY... Most definitely one of #FrankLloydWright's crowning commissions, the cylindrical building situated in the #UpperEastSide, on 5th Ave and East 89th, has not only become a #landmark of #20thcentury #architecture but of #NYC itself. I try to visit several times a year, as much for the art as for the architecture, but every time, I have a small pang of melancholy, wondering what would have been had I chosen my childhood dream of becoming an architect... 2h

the_ww2_album The end of USS Indianapolis (CA-35)
_________________________
July 30, 2015, today, marks the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the Portland-class heavy cruiser, USS Indianapolis.

The 13-year old 10 battle star veteran cruiser had just completed its top secret mission delivering the first atomic bomb, "Little Boy", to Tinian Island. Three days later departing Guam on July 29th bound for Leyte in the Philippines, shortly after midnight on July 30th, the cruiser was struck on her starboard bow by two Type 95 torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-58.

She sank in just 12 minutes. Resulting in the biggest loss of life at sea in USN history. Of the 1,196 crew onboard, about 300 went down with the ship, the rest went into the water, many adrift without life jackets. The 880 men that survived the sinking were not seen by anyone for three and half days, until a routine patrol flight spotted them. The rescue mission that followed lasted until August 8th, and only 321 men were pulled from the water, with 317 ultimately surviving.

May all those lost rest in peace.| #onthisdayinhistory - A brand new movie on this piece of history "USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage" staring Nicholas Cage and Tom Sizemore, is currently in production and due for release in May 2016.|
