• 2011 Shield Lincoln Penny
.
Facts:
• Beginning in 2010, Lyndall Bass' design was coined on the "tails" side of the penny (the Lincoln Memorial was on that side for 50 years prior).
• "LB" = Lyndall Bass, Designer of the shield
• "JFM" = Joseph F. Menna, U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver who sculpted the design
• Shield has 13 stripes to symbolize the 13 original states joined in a single union.
• There is an ongoing penny debate as to whether the penny, the one-cent coin, should be eliminated as a unit of currency in the United States.
• President Obama expressed an interest in doing away with the penny just last month.
•As of 2012, every penny cost 2.41 cents to make.

  •   undercover_ewok Aussie coins! In 1991 the Treasurer got rid of then. Took 3 years and most prices rounded up or down to nearest 5c. They are still considered legal tender and banks have to take them but not many shops will. However you rarely see them these days! 1y
