zemoamerica If you want a truly berserk, balls-to-the-wall masterclass in grindhouse comics pick up #clownfatale. It's got a super sexy quartet of gun-toting clowns going up against drug dealers, mobsters and tooled up Russian acrobats.
I read it in one sitting. It's truly insane.
And it's beautiful. Great job @mauriziorosenzweig

zemoamerica Amazing Spider-Man 127, 1973
by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru
THE DARK WINGS OF DEATH!
Part 2 of 2.
Andru's faces are an oddity here. He manages for the most part to get people to a recognisable standard only to have a glaring anomaly crop up at the wrong time and really throw you from the pace of the story. It mostly happens with the women and with MJ taking the stage here she ends up looking flat and awkward in most of her panels. Spidey on the other hand is a different matter. Andru has this part down and his renderings of Spidey at their best are almost Romita. And that's a compliment. Especially in the opening shot of Spidey surveying the crime scene, I had to double take that John Sr wasn't back in the driving seat.

Final sticking point is with the police. In any issue around this time where Spidey is wanted for the murder of Gwen and Norman the police seem to have to morally justify their reason for arresting him. There's a warrant out, they are civil servants and have to do their job yet they constantly exclaim that he must be faking being a hero and that he's in league with whatever villain he's currently fighting. Even if he's saving orphan puppies from a burning building he still hand a warrant out. They don't need to justify it every time. "He's saving those puppies sarge! He must be ok!"
"He probably put those puppies in there in the first place, killed their mother and set the building alight O'Hanrahan! We still gotta arrest him!"
Just arrest him because it's your job.

Another middle-of-the-road Conway/Andru collaboration. I actually prefer the less grounded silly stories from these two but this doesn't know what it is yet. Let's see if the second half can save it.

zemoamerica Amazing Spider-Man 127, 1973
by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru
THE DARK WINGS OF DEATH!
Part 1 of 2.
This issue sees the return of one of Spidey's all time classic villains, The Vulture, suffering from a strange malady where he is gradually turning into a physical manifestation of a bird. Vulture is involved in a murder from the outset but we get the feeling the whole way through the issue that we're not getting the whole story.

Conway approaches one of Spidey's classic bad guys with a twist, the vulture turning into a vulture...or something, and he's seen scrabbling about in this issue seemingly randomly terrorising young women. There are a couple of Spidey tussles both of which end up with a stupidly over-confident Spidey taking himself out with a dumb move or idea. Really didn't like this aspect, it's as though the Vulture is easy prey (pun!) but we can't have Spidey take him down so fast so he sabotages himself. Stan Lee would have used the old 'Peter is ill' trick to cover this but Conway replaces that with the newer 'Peter kinda sucks' trick. And it doesn't achieve the same results.

Harry's descent into villainy takes a cartoonish turn this issue as his main contribution is standing behind a tree and shaking with hysterical excitement at the potential death of Spider-Man by the Vulture. It provides the exposition for the new readers who weren't around for the Goblin/Gwen arc but still comes across as clunky. Flash doesn't fare much better, arriving in one scene with a new car only to crash it a few panels later (you had one job). Mary Jane gets a few panels this issue but ends up playing the damsel.

We check in mid-issue with the Spider-Mobile for a wordy catch-up. Something that has always struck me about the 'friendly' exchanges between Peter and Johnny in the 60s and 70s is that they are a couple of downright exhausting mean bitches to each other. All of the time. It must have been hard work having any buddies in this era at all if this is the way people talked to each other back then.

To be continued.
