yomap Would take a pretty big ice pick to do this now. Or a fan. ~

Oh, how I'd love to take the kayak out for a spin today. Sadly, it appears I'll have to wait for the weather to break. Winter went into full swing the past few weeks, and the only way I'd be able to paddle on this lake now is on skates.

The photo is from New Year's Eve. I spent my last day of 2014 inside this yellow tube paddling gleefully around the lake. When I'd gone out a few days prior, it was unseasonably warm. But after a week of snow and sub-zero temperatures, the water was beginning to freeze over. It didn't matter that it was bitterly cold. I felt only warmth as I sipped from my cup of bliss.

At first, I couldn't find a point of entry. The ice that was creeping out from the shoreline had already grown too thick. I thought it would break when I plopped the kayak down on top of it. No joy. And again when I added my weight. Uh-uh. Instead, I sat on the frozen bank scooting forward and back on my keister inside the kayak and paddling on top of solid ice. Finally, I gathered my gear and walked the edge of the lake until I found a spot to get on the water. This is that spot.

Now the lake is frozen over completely, and that day keeps me sated for the time being. Such a blast. Navigating around thick frozen slabs. Bumping into mini-bergs. And the best. Pile driving through and breaking apart the thin sheets of ice just forming on the surface.

yomap badlands meets motor city ~

Enjoyed an impromptu trip to Detroit this weekend with the yofamily.

Had a real nice time catching up with this guy (@sweatengine), who was in town for the Auto Show. Kevin had work to do, so we didn't have a whole lot of time, but it was good all the same. By the by, if you like origin stories, there's a pretty good one about how I first met Kevin a couple summers ago at a random outpost in South Dakota. To read about it, go to #yo_tomes and find the photo of a desolate gravel road, located a few rows up from the beginning of the gallery.

Good to see you, Kevin. Looking forward to that return trip to the Badlands.

Then, to top things off, I had another nice visit with @meether369, who joined the yofamily for dinner in Greektown before we headed home. Thanks for taking the ride into town, Melissa. Great to see you.

yomap October 2014 ~

Happy New Year, folks. I know it's 1/1/2015. I just have one thing to finish before moving ahead.

I had designs for a countdown yesterday. I wanted to post a photo from each month of the past year. Thought it might be a fun way to wind up my 2014. Came close. I think I posted more photos in a day than I ever have before. Even learned a few things. 1) I apparently don't take photos every month. 2) Somewhere along the line I stopped capturing people in my pictures. And 3) I need to embrace more red and orange around me. All good reminders.

Then I hit October. And this photo. And the activity that started out as breezy and fleeting and fun gathered more heft than I intended, and it all screeched to a halt. I couldn't post this one. Not without comment. And if I couldn't post this one, I didn't want to post anymore.

The original is innocuous enough. Accompanied by a simple, critic caption: miss you ~ fix you. Most in the know at the time likely recognized that as a vague reference to the loss of my friend, Michael. But there was more. I discovered this abandoned house shortly after absorbing the devastating news of Michael's death. I was alone. The door was ajar. And I was in desperate need of a diversion.

Crossing the threshold was like breaking the seal of a vacuum. Inside, I not only explored every room, corner and shadow. I cried. Hard. The raw, ugly kind. Stinging tears. Swollen eyes. Heaving chest. Involuntary bubbles of snot. A harrowing sight. The stuff of true anguish.

But through the sobs, I settled my gaze on this wall. And that displaced door. And those holes of broken plaster. And that harsh light just out of reach around the corner. And I imagined what my heart must have looked like at that moment. Damaged. Displaced. Dark recesses where light could no longer reach.

And there it was. My broken heart. Staring back at me. Prodding me to take its picture.

And here it is now. These months later. Still staring. Still prodding. To see beauty through the pain. To feel hope in spite of despair.

It's my lasting image of 2014.
