  •   instacmr @xodvf good, I thought this was the only time 1w
  •   xodvf we'll release a statement this afternoon. it was postponed due to overwhelming number of public witnesses, etc... in our favor. @instacmr 1w
  •   aminorart I love your fighting spirit! You've got my attention and support. We must do a better job together in protecting the beauty and creativity of the city that so many of our rooted elders strived and struggled to build because these rich developers don't care. I'm glad the chair members presented them with some tough questions and changes to their proposal and offer my support to you and the artist union in any way needed. We can't let them destroy our city's gems! 1w
  •   aerenwaters I'm just seeing all of this. This is insane! Thank you for keeping us informed @xodvf. From your earlier comment, what will be going down on the 23rd? I, along with other artists, would want to help anyway we can. 1w

xodvf according to washington's own 2010 study, "the district’s creative economy is far more significant than we previously thought, with creative jobs amounting to more than 10 percent of the city’s employment base and generating $5 billion in income." | creative capital | #iwillnotbemoved #savedarts #unionartsdc // 200+ protesters holding stencil posters created by artist @mikspress // read more on http://www.wdcep.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/creativecapital.pdf

this report, the Creative DC Action Agenda (the action agenda), was commissioned by the DC Office of planning and the Washington, DC economic partnership to quantify and put into context the creative economy of the District, giving the city’s myriad arts and cultural endeavors their rightful recognition and making the case that the creative sector can act as a powerful tool for job creation and economic growth in neighborhoods across the city.

xodvf entrepreneurship (social-creative-for profit) is about identifying your voice and taking a stand. it goes beyond a product, a service or an idea. it is in it's core your ability to fight for what is right. and even as you tremble thinking this is bigger than you; if and only if you persist, will you find yourself strengthened by communities who share the same values - you identify allies and resources. #entrepreneurship is about fighting for yourself and the community you serve. if you reimagined this desire to become a millionaire and thought instead, how can my work make the lives of a million people better - then we are creating a better civilization and not mere profit. what happens today will affect all of our futures. commercial displacement and residential #displacement go hand in hand. this is your fight. you may not see it today but you will feel it sooner than later. where do you stand? | a gentrified dc. #xodvf #iwillnotbemoved #SaveDCArts @agentrifieddc 2w
  •   thestylelinguist Thank you truly for articulating it in the way you have. Giving an entirely new perspective (for me) on entrepreneurship. Seeing that it's more of a responsible to the individual as well as to those your business/service serves...🏾🏾 this is def #foodforthought 2w
  •   fibbanotchee Well said very thought provoking 🏾 2w
  •   muminmotion I stand with you. sending you energy to keep standing. 2w
  •   mnmlistbeauty I love this! I stand with my values, my dreams, and my life purpose which is always bigger than a product or profit. 2w

xodvf where do you stand? #iwillnotbemoved #unionartsdc // #SaveDCArts - The Union Arts building at 411 New York Ave NE is the last collective art space of its kind in Washington, DC. It has been home to more than 100 artists and numerous organizations for many decades working as a catalyst of creativity for many communities throughout the city.
Regrettably, our building was sold to development groups who plan to evict all of us – the resident artists and organizations – by September 1. They intend to displace us so they can build an 11-story luxury boutique arts hotel. The DBLee and Brook Rose development groups have enlisted Cultural DC to convert the now affordable and diversely accessible art space into a chic hotel, where only 7 art studios will be made available to no more than 20 artists. This is far fewer than the number of artist collectives currently working in the building, who after being displaced will then be forced to compete for studios at a significantly higher price. In addition, the new building will greatly alter the character of the area into another sterile development, not suited for creative inspiration. What is definite is the building has been sold. The current tenants at 411 New York Ave NE must vacate out by September 1st. BUT we can change the course.
FOR starters, COME to the zoning hearing TOMORROW, February 1st at 6:30pm at Office of Zoning and Planning in Washington DC. If you have performed, exhibited, frequented, worked, or otherwise support the artist activities at 411 New York Ave, come and speak against displacement of the artists you like and on behalf of the ability of artists and musicians to work in Washington, DC. We want to stack the house.

  •   xodvf IMPORTANT - If you are unable to speak at the public hearing, written statements (see item 1) are STRONGLY encouraged, as each will be made a part of the official record. .
    SPEAK OUT, BE HEARD!
At this hearing, the public (that means YOU) will have an opportunity to make statements and testify to the truth, beginning 8pm.
The sale and repurposing of the Union Arts space at 411 New York Avenue fits the latest national trend of redevelopment and gentrification that makes existing as an artist in cities across the country, and especially in Washington, DC, a near impossibility.
411 New York Avenue is the last space of its kind in the District. This zoning and planning hearing is a perfect opportunity for artists who are active in DC’s contemporary creative community to make their voices heard to those who need to hear it.
Please come and make your voice heard!

Read the zoning hearing statement. See the plans for yourself.
