whatames I've never been great at sharing, especially things I should take pride in. I work quietly, hardly asking for support, and definitely not asking for help. Others have already accomplished so much more; it's easy to feel inadequate. This past year has been terribly confusing, frustrating, and a constant battle with myself over what I want to do with my life and what I am even able to do, given my college degree and lack of work experience, and not knowing which field(s) I could excel in or enjoy, if any. But during the month of July, I decided to be kinder to myself, to relieve my mind of the burdensome decisions that need to be made. So I wrote a novel. Every day I sat down and wrote 600-3000 words. It might be pretty terrible; the plot probably makes little sense, and either way it'll take ages to edit. Who knows if I'll ever deem it fit to publish, but the foundation is there. I had an idea, and for once, I made something happen, all on my own. I can only hope that this commitment to following through with a plan will seep into other areas of my life, where I have felt stuck and stagnant since graduating. This past month I never once dropped the ball, never threw my hands up or threatened to quit. This is one of the few things in my life I've not given up on, and that's what makes me proudest of all.

So perhaps if you're unsure of the next step, sit down and write. Or get in the habit of setting aside a little time each day to build something from the ground up. You will surprise yourself with how much you grow with your own creation. (And many thanks to the stalwartly supportive Michael Butler, for sacrificing many minutes of Skype time to hear me ramble about the plot, and for making some excellent suggestions.)
