usmcmuseum Today at the museum, the FDNY Marine Corps Association dedicated a monument to commemorate the 17 New York City firefighters - who were also Marines - who died on September 11th. The monument includes FDNY’s last piece of World Trade Center steel. The steel was escorted to the museum on Saturday, Oct 4, by hundreds of motorcyclists from New York as part of the Iron and Steel Run. Stop by soon and see this amazing monument in Semper Fidelis Memorial Park next to the museum. Semper Fidelis Marines!

usmcmuseum WWII IWO JIMA DONATION: Recently we were honored to receive a special collection of personal items from the family of WWII veteran, Marine Corporal James Michels. Michels was a member of the combat patrol that raised the first flag on Mt. Suribachi, during the battle of Iwo Jima. He is pictured at the flag raising -- he is seen lower right with M-1 Carbine, standing guard after the first flag raising on 23 February 1945.

The collection includes a World War II era photo of then PFC James Michels in his Winter Service uniform, his engraved Purple Heart Medal from Iwo Jima, and his complete Winter Service uniform and cover.

We want to thank the Michels family for their donation, and we especially thank Cpl James Michels for his service. Semper Fidelis!

usmcmuseum September 11, 2001 - We remember.
Today, please join us in pausing to remember and honor those who lost their lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on Flight 93. We will never forget.
Also, please feel free to share any memories you have of 9-11, or what this day means to you.
If you happen to be visiting the museum today, we encourage you to view pieces from our “9-11 - We Remember” temporary exhibit in our Legacy Walk Gallery. On display are an I-beam from the World Trade Center and a Pentagon building fragment. These pieces will be the cornerstone of our permanent "9-11 Exhibit" in the expansion of the museum, which begins in 2015.
Semper Fidelis

  •   its_spelled_scully I was in pre-k, and my teacher was almost pulled out of our classroom by an administrator. Whenever she came back in, her face was panicked and pale white. She told all of us to sit down and be quiet, then she turned the lights off. We all crouched to the window on the other side of the room adjacent to the door. We were so young we were excited for the fact that we were sitting in a dark room, we didn't understand the extent of how horrible it was. 1mon
  •   wes_das_jude I was in college and working full time. My girlfriend (now my wife) called me and told me to turn the TV on. She told me a plane had hit the first tower and they were unsure if it was a terrorist attack or an accident. As soon as I turned on the tv the second plane hit. It was horrifying to see. I decided that I needed to serve my country and seek justice against the ones behind these heinous acts. One thing I did learn out of this is our country pulled together in a magnificent way. The American solder and public servants like the police officers and fire fighters became bigger heroes than professional athletes. Not that any of them were looking for the recognition, but getting their well deserved recognition. I'm sure that nobody will ever forget where they were at and what they were doing on that day. 1mon
  •   janinekspendlove I'd just graduated TBS & was at NAS Pensacola for flight school. My class was all horrified & wanted to give up our flight contracts so we could go ground and immediately deploy in defense of our nation. 1mon

usmcmuseum Check out this treasured stuffed Marine Corps doll recently donated to the Museum by the niece of Cpl Thomas E. Rheineck.
Rheineck enlisted in the Marine Corps in January, 1942 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Prior to his deployment to the Pacific Theater with 3d Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division, he gave this doll to his niece. Rheineck went on to fight on Iwo Jima, where he was killed in action. Semper Fidelis Marine!

The doll has recently been added to our Cultural and Material History collection.

usmcmuseum This framed watercolor on paper by Donald Dickson titled “Killer” is one of our most recent acquisitions. It was transferred this year to the National Museum of the Marine Corps from Center House, the Bachelor Officer Quarters located at Marine Corps Barracks, Washington, DC. The drawing, featuring a Marine holding a Reising Gun, was likely created by then-Major Donald Dickson, USMCR, from his time on Guadalcanal. Dickson retired as a Colonel in the USMCR and became editor of Leatherneck Magazine.

27 April 1805: Marine First Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon and his men wrested a stronghold from Barbary pirates in the Battle of Derne. It was first time that the United States flag was raised in victory on foreign soil.
