usmcmuseum And so it begins...the first step in our "Final Phase" expansion begins with the erection of a construction wall in Leatherneck Gallery. The wall will cover the noise and dust of the construction. The expansion will add 120,000 sqft to the Museum and provide space for two new historical galleries, a large format theater, an art gallery, classrooms and more. The new galleries and spaces will open in phases over the next 5 years. Check back often for updates! #Marines #history #semperfi 4d

usmcmuseum Just shy of our 8 year anniversary, we happily greeted our 4 MILLIONTH VISITOR to the Museum today! When David Hiteshew, a retired Middletown, Ohio teacher now working with Nowak Tours, stepped inside the Museum’s doors he had no idea his visit would be so eventful. He was met by our Director, Lin Ezell and presented with a gift basket. This was David's first tour with Nowak, and his first visit to the Museum. Thanks for visiting David! We hope you enjoyed your day at the Museum. #Marines #USMC #NowakTour #Museum 3mon

usmcmuseum Today at the museum, the FDNY Marine Corps Association dedicated a monument to commemorate the 17 New York City firefighters - who were also Marines - who died on September 11th. The monument includes FDNY’s last piece of World Trade Center steel. The steel was escorted to the museum on Saturday, Oct 4, by hundreds of motorcyclists from New York as part of the Iron and Steel Run. Stop by soon and see this amazing monument in Semper Fidelis Memorial Park next to the museum. Semper Fidelis Marines!

usmcmuseum WWII IWO JIMA DONATION: Recently we were honored to receive a special collection of personal items from the family of WWII veteran, Marine Corporal James Michels. Michels was a member of the combat patrol that raised the first flag on Mt. Suribachi, during the battle of Iwo Jima. He is pictured at the flag raising -- he is seen lower right with M-1 Carbine, standing guard after the first flag raising on 23 February 1945.

The collection includes a World War II era photo of then PFC James Michels in his Winter Service uniform, his engraved Purple Heart Medal from Iwo Jima, and his complete Winter Service uniform and cover.

We want to thank the Michels family for their donation, and we especially thank Cpl James Michels for his service. Semper Fidelis!
