usmcmuseum At the Museum today, we were extremely honored to welcome veterans and their family members from the Lynchburg Exchange Club Veterans' Trip to Washington DC.

Marine Corps University President, Brigadier General Helen Pratt was on hand to personally welcome the veterans to the Museum. Gen Pratt greeted everyone with a handshake or a hug and thanked them for their service.
Lynchburg Exchange Club arranges the annual trip to recognize and honor "Americans who have fought for our country and the ‘American Way'." The trip gives the veterans the opportunity to visit the World War II, Vietnam, and Korean War Memorials; the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery; and the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

usmcmuseum Artifact Highlight: Stencil Kit

During World War II, enlisted Marines seldom displayed rank insignia on their Utility (combat) uniforms. This changed during the Korean War, and Marines used a kit to stencil noncommissioned officer chevrons on their sleeves.

This kit, made by the Stripe-Rite Company is on display in our Legacy Walk Gallery.

Anyone ever used this type of kit? #USMC #marines #history #photooftheday #uniform

usmcmuseum Iron Mike standing watch at the entrance to the Museum.

Our statue is a duplicate of the original statue 'Crusading for Right', which was commissioned by Army General John Pershing at the end of WWI.
There is an interesting story behind the original statue. The sculptor, Charles Raphael Peer, unaware of the differences in the branches of service used a Marine private as a model. He sculpted the Marine, right down to the Marine Corps emblem on his helmet. Pershing demanded that the emblem be removed, but Peyre refused to compromise his work. When the Army refused to purchase the statue, Marine General Smedley Butler raised funds, purchased the statue and had it installed in front of Butler Hall on Marine Corps Base Quantico in 1919. It still stands there today.

usmcmuseum When we reopen tomorrow Marine SgtMaj Dan Daly's two Medals of Honor will be on display in Legacy Walk. It's the first time we have displayed the back of one of the medals, which is inscribed with his citation. Daly is one of only 19 men to have received the Medal of Honor twice. He is a legend in the Corps and attributed with saying,"Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?" during the Battle of Belleau Wood in WWI. Oorah!
