usinterior #Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West. But this treasure is much more than a monument. Towering monoliths exist within a vast plateau and canyon panorama. You can experience sheer-walled, red rock canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive, where you may spy bighorn sheep and soaring eagles.

usinterior Happy holiday's from all of us at the Department of the Interior! Here's an amazing photo from #Yosemite National Park (@YosemiteNPS) by Manish Mamtani, which was taken a couple years ago. Here's what he had to say about it. "I was out in Yosemite for Christmas and after 2 days of snowfall, finally the sky cleared in Yosemite. I reached the Valley View in Yosemite National Park just after the sunset. I decided to stay to take some pictures unaware that it was a full moon night and that the moon will rise in between EL Capitan and Cathedral Rocks. It was one of the beautiful sights i have ever seen in my life. This picture made my trip." 2d

usinterior #Muskoxen are an iconic herbivore of the Seward Peninsula and Bering Land Bridge National Preserve. Most muskoxen live in Greenland and Arctic Canada, although smaller populations inhabit #Alaska, Siberia, and Norway.

As bovines, they are more closely related to cattle, sheep and goats than to oxen. Both males and females sport fabulous curved horns, although the males' horns are much larger for use in fights and for personal defense. In addition, they are also known to protectively circle their young, when threatened, or charge at their offenders.

With a relatively low reproductive rate, muskoxen give birth to only one calf every 2-3 years in late April or May. By adulthood, they can weigh anywhere from 400-800lbs. Although their populations have fluctuated over the last century, dropping to just over 100 individuals in 1980, today they number around 3,800 in the state of Alaska.

usinterior The United States Congress designated the Steens Mountain Wilderness in 2000 and it now has over 170,200 acres. All of this wilderness is located in #Oregon and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. #SteensMountain is located in Oregon’s high desert is one of the crown jewels of the state’s wildlands. It is some of the wildest and most remote land left in Oregon.

Opportunities for recreation on Steens Mountain are as plentiful as they are widespread. Popular activities include camping, picnicking, sightseeing, and exploring the open country on foot and horseback. Hiking is available in all areas and trailheads exist near Page Springs and South Steens Campgrounds, as well as Wildhorse Overlook and Pike Creek. Visitors photograph landscapes, wildlife and wildflowers, and catch redband trout in the Donner und Blitzen River. usinterior The Browns Canyon Wilderness Study Area in #Colorado contains very rugged topography, with many mountains, canyons, and gulches. Drainages generally cross the WSA in an east-to-west direction and empty into the #ArkansasRiver. #BrownsCanyon WSA offers outstanding opportunities for solitude, especially in canyons and gulches such as Middle Cottonwood Gulch, Cottonwood Gulch, Spring Gulch, Sawmill Gulch, and Green Gulch.

The 14,000-foot peaks of the Sawatch Range are located directly west of the WSA and provide a majestically scenic background. The Ruby Mountain area is very popular among rock hounds, and the Arkansas River Valley offers a wealth of natural and cultural resources.

usinterior Located off the southwest coast of #Alaska, #BristolBay is known for its pristine waters, world-class fisheries and stunning beauty. Bristol Bay's natural beauty helps drive the local economy through tourism, and commercial and recreational fishing. Bristol Bay provides important habitat for many species, including sea otters, seals, walruses, Beluga and Killer whales.

Today, President Obama designated the waters of Bristol Bay as off limits from future oil and gas development -- a step that will help the region’s economic and cultural heritage.

As it sends water over a hundred feet into subzero air, a winter eruption of #OldFaithful often creates plumes of steam that cover the sky. Thinking about a winter adventure in #Yellowstone?
