traditioncycles Here is an original photo from my archives of Mardo Bennett's "IT" 1959 XLCH Show Bike in 1968 and the same bike featured on the cover of 1968 Cycle Guide Custom Annual. Mardo of Bronx, NY was a key figure in motorcycle customizing in the Northeast in the 60s and is the man solely responsible for taking split tanks and welding them together to make the legendary "Alien Tank." @shovelhead98austin schooled me on how they got the name "Alien Tanks." Mardo was a member of The Aliens MC and apparently many club members ran these style tanks, hence where it got associated with the word alien. 4w
  •   the_harpoon That's a neat issue of cycle guide representing the styles on both coasts at the time, but Dick Hirschberg was doing that out here in the 50's. Made it into hot rod magazine with an axed tank in 1960... 4w
  •   blakesta83 @customcafe1026 check that display 4w
  •   traditioncycles @the_harpoon kool man thanks! Without a doubt I'm sure people had done it before, but I don't know what year he started doing them. You'd have to ask @shovelhead98austin that. But out here, he was the man that did it and kept doing it. If you wanted one, you went an seen Mardo. I'm sure the majority of Alien tanks out here were done by him and in turn its popularity influenced the major manufactures such as GME to take notice and start producing them themselves. But that is just a guess... 4w
