toosphexy By the time I made my way back to the mouth of the canyon, the sun was setting. I found this wonderful cristate Saguaro, who I've been watching for 26 years. When I first saw you, the fasciatic mutation at your peak looked like Blake's Winged Serpent. Now the serpent has young, new limbs growing from the beautiful deformity. 15h

toosphexy At the saddle there was snow, and a view down to the valley. "...and always these islands are becoming smaller, for around them surges the gnawing flood of the Wasichu, and it is dirty with lies and greed." 16h

toosphexy This guy and I contemplated each other for a while. He was missing an antler. When he left to trot uphill, he flashed his thick and bushy white tail at me. 16h

toosphexy Further up still and there are pines, and the waterfall is frozen. Worms of water work their way between the rock and the ice. 16h

toosphexy You go higher and the cottonwoods turn into oaks. Live oaks at first and then pin oaks and I think tan oaks and several others as well. The water is cold but not too cold. You can soak your head. 16h

toosphexy Halfway up the canyon there's water flowing over smooth stones, and old metates where people pounded jojoba and mesquite for a thousand years before whitey showed up. There were some jojoba beans on the bushes nearby. They're good, bitter and chewy and dark. 16h

toosphexy Went up Pima Canyon today. This is where I learned what wild nature is. My parents bought a house on the north end of Tucson in 1988, after my mother and I immigrated from the UK, and the mountains were right out of our front door. Hiking up through the changing floral communities was like visiting old friends. I remember these cottonwoods from back then. 16h
