tomasvh What happens when our thirst for natural resources causes us to destroy where we live? Mining activity in city of Cerro de Pasco, high in the Andes, offers a frightening example of runaway greed, wounded land and poisoned children. This photo shows Leydi Gonzales (left) and sister Sonia. When I met them in 2013, both had levels of lead in their blood that are more than three times what’s considered dangerous by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Their three siblings had elevated levels too. Read the full feature on the mine that's eating a city in Peru on the @NatGeo website. tomasvh This image from #Pyongyang is part of a group exhibition about #NorthKorea which opens Thursday at the Museum of Contemporary Photography (@MoCPChi) in #Chicago: http://tomasvh.com/shows-and-events/north-korean-perspectives-mocp-drents-museums/

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), or North Korea, has been called the Hermit Kingdom, as it is one of the most reclusive states in the world. North Korea’s citizens are not allowed to travel abroad, there is no Internet connection to the outside world, and the flow of information is almost completely controlled by the government. This exhibition will be divided into two main sections: one showing the government’s official version of North Korea, while the other offers the alternative view of the country. Imagery distributed through official channels, such as the country’s press agency KCNA, which is based in Japan, and those photographed by tourists on state-controlled tours will offer an official view. These official images will be juxtaposed with a non-controlled stream of images coming out of the country: photographs produced by international photojournalists from within the nation, and international artists using photography and video to directly address North Korea.

tomasvh A boy dressed like Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte looks through binoculars over the Waterloo battlefield from on top of the Lion's Mound in Waterloo, Belgium. Napoleon's historic loss to the the Duke of Wellington on this day, 200-years ago, meant the surrounding territory would not be part of France. Instead, a buffer state comprised of French and Dutch-speakers emerged into present-day Belgium. You can see my 2013 story for Dutch-language National Geographic, titled Half Belgium at: http://tomasvh.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Half-Belgium/G0000DSAR0fYgZ28/I0000G7Q2KAm4Weg @viiphoto @thephotosociety @natgeo @Leica_Camera #Waterloo #HalfBelgium #Napoleon #Bonaparte #LeicaM9 8mon

tomasvh Eleven-year old Sabina Khatri stands in front of her home which was destroyed by the #NepalQuake in Kotgaun, #Nepal. Residents are tearing down buildings in the hamlet which are too damaged to repair. On June 4th, a team from @InternationalMedicalCorps built 20 new latrines here and in the neighboring village to help prevent waterborne disease when monsoon rains arrive. #NepalEarthquake #SupportNepal #InternationalMedicalCorps #IMC #LeicaM @viiphoto @thephotosociety @leica_camera @natgeo 8mon

tomasvh I visited #Swayambhunath last night, a beautiful hilltop Buddhist stupa, and one my favorite places when I first traveled to #Kathmandu as a student in 1997 (top photo). The main stupa structure survived the #NepalQuake, but the surrounding monasteries and buildings have collapsed, leaving monks and caretakers living in tents (bottom photo). #nonfiction #flashback #Swayambhu #Nepal #NepalEarthquake #SupportNepal #InternationalMedicalCorps #IMC @InternationalMedicalCorps @viiphoto @thephotosociety @natgeo 8mon

tomasvh "Welcome to our school" is written on the door of a schoolhouse for four to six-year olds, destroyed by the #NepalQuake in Kotgaun, near the village of Bishankho Narayan, Kathmandu Valley, #Nepal. Temporary open air classrooms and tents have sprung up around the village, but reconstruction of permanent facilities has barely started. A team from International Medical Corps set up 20 new latrines in the area to help prevent waterborne disease when the monsoon season arrives. #nonfiction #InternationalMedicalCorps #IMC @InternationalMedicalCorps @viiphoto @thephotosociety 8mon

tomasvh A resident pauses from cleaning up the aftermath of the #NepalQuake to release a pigeon which was disoriented amidst loose ruble in a heavily damaged neighbor of Bhaktapur, #Nepal. More than a month after the first of two powerful earthquakes, painstaking cleanup is still underway. Many residents are using their own hands and simple tools to stabilize their homes before heavy monsoon rains arrive. I'll be on assignment for @InternationalMedicalCorps in #Nepal for the days ahead. #IMC #InternationalMedicalCorps @VIIPhoto @ThePhotoSociety #LeicaM @Leica_Camera 8mon
