tomasvh Today marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. In this photo, actors dressed as German foot soldiers run through a battlefield set in Flanders Fields near #Veurne, #Belgium as part of the filming of a #WWI television series called In Vlaamse Velden last year. #WesternFront #FlandersFields #latergram 1d

tomasvh It isn't often you see a display of #Belgian pride, and the Red Devils football (soccer) team is one of the few forces that unifies a country often bitterly divided among language groups. The Red Devils are playing tonight against team USA in #WorldCup2014. I shot this photo of Belgian fans on assignment for @Natgeo 2012, when I walked across #Belgium's language border to document the French-speaking and #Flemish communities. •   tomasvh @francapra_ I've heard London has the most surveillance cams. I'll check Milan when I visit in September. 1mon
  •   empire_lights Most cameras are their to watch the interests of business that put them there, Security Cameras as unsettling as they are, have been beneficial in solving a number of crimes, and finding missing people. One day I too would like to live off grid in the countryside but for now I enjoy the city. Even with its quirks. 1mon

tomasvh A girl looks out the window of her makeshift home inside an abandoned factory on the outskirts of Baku, #Azerbaijan. The girl and her family are refugees from the frozen conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. June 20th makes World Refugee Day, and the UN announced that the number of people displaced by war exceeded 50 million last year, the highest number since WWII. Over the years, I've documented refugees from North Korea, Nepal, Palestine, Tunisia, Sri Lanka, Iraq, Iran, Sudan. As many of us sit in the comfort of our own homes, it is easy to forget the challenges and daily indignities of those who have had to flee. I've posted a wider selection of photographs of #refugees and #IDP's on my blog: http://tomasvh.com/2014/06/20/refugees/ #UNHCR #documentary #NagornoKarabakh #nonfiction #WorldRefugeeDay #latergram @VIIPhoto 1mon

tomasvh The secret #DroneWar officially started 10 years ago today when missiles hit a house in South Waziristan at 10pm on June 17, 2004 and killed a senior militant, along with a half dozen other people. After a decade, #CIA #drone strikes remain classified, but the London-based Bureau of investigative Journalism estimates between 2,338 and 3,709 people have been killed by them in Pakistan. The Bureau estimates the number of children killed between 168 and 202. This photo is from a series of pictures which I took by drone over the USA, by flying over situations similar to those cited in drone strike reports. tomasvh A smile is one of our most basic and simple reactions. Yet in photojournalism, it’s almost a taboo to show. When documenting natural disasters, conflict and poverty, we photographers often search for a distinct moment which captures the grave circumstances, often avoiding the joy and triumph of the human spirit which appears even in the most challenging circumstances. This photo of members of the Young Communist League in China is part of a new exhibition focusing on smiles. Featuring 85 photographs by the @VIIPhoto collective, the exhibition can be seen through May 1, 2014 at Brookfield Place, Winter Garden, 220 Vesey Street, New York, NY. What makes you smile? Submit your own smile photo using the hashtag #ShareMySmile. @ArtsBrookfield 3mon
