tomasvh This image from #Pyongyang is part of a group exhibition about #NorthKorea which opens Thursday at the Museum of Contemporary Photography (@MoCPChi) in #Chicago: http://tomasvh.com/shows-and-events/north-korean-perspectives-mocp-drents-museums/

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), or North Korea, has been called the Hermit Kingdom, as it is one of the most reclusive states in the world. North Korea’s citizens are not allowed to travel abroad, there is no Internet connection to the outside world, and the flow of information is almost completely controlled by the government. This exhibition will be divided into two main sections: one showing the government’s official version of North Korea, while the other offers the alternative view of the country. Imagery distributed through official channels, such as the country’s press agency KCNA, which is based in Japan, and those photographed by tourists on state-controlled tours will offer an official view. These official images will be juxtaposed with a non-controlled stream of images coming out of the country: photographs produced by international photojournalists from within the nation, and international artists using photography and video to directly address North Korea.

tomasvh A huge thanks to the excellent team from @docfieldbcn which opened my "Blue Sky Days" solo exhibition at Arts Santa Monica in #Barcelona yesterday. The project questions how the rise of drone technology is changing the nature of society, personal privacy and warfare. The show--which includes large analogue prints and a video installation--is open through September 6th with free public admission. #surveillance #documentary #blueskydays #drones #docfield15 #photographicsocialvision @Murrayjes @thephotosociety @NatGeo @VIIPhoto 2mon

tomasvh A boy dressed like Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte looks through binoculars over the Waterloo battlefield from on top of the Lion's Mound in Waterloo, Belgium. Napoleon's historic loss to the the Duke of Wellington on this day, 200-years ago, meant the surrounding territory would not be part of France. Instead, a buffer state comprised of French and Dutch-speakers emerged into present-day Belgium. You can see my 2013 story for Dutch-language National Geographic, titled Half Belgium at: http://tomasvh.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Half-Belgium/G0000DSAR0fYgZ28/I0000G7Q2KAm4Weg @viiphoto @thephotosociety @natgeo @Leica_Camera #Waterloo #HalfBelgium #Napoleon #Bonaparte #LeicaM9 3mon

tomasvh #Repost from @natgeo: ----- Photo by @TomasVH. I visited #Swayambhunath yesterday, a beautiful hilltop Buddhist stupa, and one my favorite places since I first lived in #Kathmandu as a student in 1997. The main stupa structure survived the #NepalQuake, but the surrounding monasteries and buildings have collapsed, damaging Buddhist and Hindu statues, like these which had been removed from the rubble. Monks and caretakers are now living in tents. #nonfiction #Swayambhu #Nepal #NepalEarthquake #SupportNepal @InternationalMedicalCorps @viiphoto @thephotosociety 3mon

  •   annelicious27 @tomasvh we're currently the NGO allowed to work up there. We are removing rubble and also extracting their lost artifacts. Would you like to come for a day and take some pics? We are also working many other sites in the Kathmandu valley including private homes and Temporary Learning Centers. Our NGO is All Hands Volunteers. They're great; volunteer driven and we do the work for free! We would love to have you. Thanks! 3mon

tomasvh A resident pauses from cleaning up the aftermath of the #NepalQuake to release a pigeon which was disoriented amidst loose ruble in a heavily damaged neighbor of Bhaktapur, #Nepal. More than a month after the first of two powerful earthquakes, painstaking cleanup is still underway.
