taylorfreesolo The Suessian trees in the Hongu valley ask me to slow the pace and notice their twisting fractal poses and technicolor birds. But @m_synnott tells trail stories about his teenage motorcycle adventures to Mexico and surviving on squirrel stew - "and then I made a vest of their hides to use the whole animal." So now I gotta stumble-run and catch up all over again.

taylorfreesolo A combination of post-expedition exhaustion and "are you really going to take my picture right now?" ... But these are also the blue-steel looks of unposed reality. The ones that hold all the truths of our imperfect whirlwind trying damn hard to do the best we can make the most of it all life. These are the moments I fall in love with. #thelasthoneyhunter @natgeo @camp4collective 5d

taylorfreesolo The harvest is a coordinated ballet of grace and terror, all beginning with one swooping synchronous movement. The minute the brush fire at the base starts the ropes are dropped, the bees swarm and lift from the hive, and up goes Mauli. The relationship between the Kulung and the bees is not greedy or extractive, but in sync with the time bees will naturally leave the hives to build new ones. Everything worked in balance. ~

taylorfreesolo These new bridges are only temporary as the upcoming monsoon pulse may wash them down within a week or so. But since the main walking path on the hillside was wiped out from last year's earthquake landslides, the porters assembled two bamboo bridges yesterday within a few hours. #thelasthoneyhunter @natgeo @renan_ozturk @ben_knight @m_synnott @jetbutterflies @camp4collective #feltsoulmedia @sandisk @radiantimages @reddigitalcinema @thenorthface 2w

taylorfreesolo Maule, #thelasthoneyhunter of the Hongu valley, spent over four hours dangling from this 75-meter handwoven bamboo rope ladder. As it is carried back down to our remote jungle camp the team took a moment to reflect back on the cliff, the spirits who granted permission for the harvest, and an overall exhausting day. Swollen eyes and feet from errant bee stings didn't dampen their joy. -

taylorfreesolo Playground slide in the sky.- -

I've made it to Sadhi but the drone has yet to be tested. Our tech master @rudy.le back at C4 told me not to fly it yet as the gauges on the new wires are different enough that the connection points may immediately melt mid-air. So today is the final resoldering mission before we test it, and tomorrow morning we set off with Maule on his final honey harvest. - -

While we know the drone is a useful storytelling tool to show a vivid picture of the landscape and place, the team and I have our heads and hearts more fully immersed in this village not the technology through which we are sharing their story. Last night everyone came out for an impromptu talent show. Singing, dancing, string thrumming, harmonicas, weaving. Those under 2 feet tall had other plans, running to the edge of the village to partake in the sheer joy of bum sliding down a smoothed rock. @renan_ozturk @benknight @jetbutterflies @m_synnott @camp4collective #feltsoulmedia @natgeo #thelasthoneyhunter

taylorfreesolo 5:36am, backyard morning debrief #2 with Lucy. Over invigorating down dogs, up dogs, and sit-around dogs, we discussed our situation. So far we managed to find the batteries from India but getting them here requires someone from Kathmandu flying to Delhi, picking the batteries up, then taking a 24 hour soul-crushing night bus across the border, film permits in hand. A border which may turn them back. This option was not only more carbon intensive than the mission already is, but full of risk. @renan_ozturk tells Lucy and I that we have about 72 hours to make it happen before the Maule's final honey harvest will begin. It's the "impossible shot" that Renan's been dreaming of for almost two years, to capture this piece of history from an aerial perspective. Well shoot Lucy. We need a plan B...
-

About the same moment that I let go of the India approach, an email popped into my mailbox. It's @jongriffithphotography and he is on his way down from the mountain and will be in KTM in a few hours. By some twist of magic, he *kinda* has the batteries we need. We just, ya know, need to do some cutting and soldering of all the wires (with fire! yikes!) to reconfigure the connection ports to match Renan's drone. It's not guaranteed to work, but it might. #hailmary #doingthings @outdoorvoices

taylorfreesolo In some sense, life in Kathmandu today appeared seamless - school kids in uniform puddle skipping to school, farm stands overflowing with produce, men and women on their way to work. But in talking to a few who live here it's easy to pick up the frustration and pain that's very much alive. In the year since the earthquake, the rebuild of not just civil infrastructure but some 800,000 destroyed homes is drastically delayed. It's worse in the rural and high villages outside of Kathmandu than in the city itself, and people are turning towards the government wondering when the needed help will come. I do believe as outsiders, supporting Nepal with tourism is beneficial as it brings money directly to people. The community-based and Nepali run grassroots organizations like @dzifoundation @thejuniperfund and #rasuwarelief in the Langtang also do incredible work and are worth supporting. @camp4collective #nepaliLoveyou 3w

taylorfreesolo Woke up at 4:12am to a lightning bolt so big and hot it warmed my face. A stampede of thunder followed, shaking the trinkets on the night stand. Where am I... Where am I?! Ben's house. Ok. I'm in Nepal.
-

Flashback to 48 hours ago when I got a sat-phone call from @renan_ozturk. Half of it was cut off but the jist was simple - Please get on the next flight to Kathmandu. Our drone batteries were confiscated in Dubai and if you can pull of some ninja logistics and find a way to source them in India or China, get them onto an overnight passenger bus to Nepal (where they aren't sold), and get yourself and the drone-kit into the remote jungle where we are... in as few days as possible... please do.- -

The thunderstorm subsided and I went outside to begin my mission. Lucy (@jetbutterflies dog) waited at the steps, and seems to know better than I what to do next.

taylorfreesolo It's a strange world we live in little buddy. When the intellectually superior creature is confined within a large glass jar for us furry bumbling creatures to tap and pester and stare. But despite the irony and sadness I really believe aquariums are such gifts. I watched dozens of toddlers lose their toddler minds today, curious and fascinated with your tentacle ballet. I found myself about to break into a mirrored tentacle dance before I remembered... I was in a public place. Next time ; ) #bostonaquarium #listenclosely 1mon
  •   tara722 @taylorfreesolo I love this but, love all creatures to be free too! Such mixed feelings however if used with proper respect in order to educate its good. And...you're on the East Coast!? :) 1mon
  •   jshushansky I wouldn't put it past you to break into dance first, notice the onlookers second. My behavior when I'm alone with Annie feels like guttural freedom. 4w

taylorfreesolo Life comes in tidal currents and waves and all those pretty rhythms, sure. Sometimes. But other times it comes in torrential hurricanes. taylorfreesolo The @sanctityofspace crew had a long awaited rendezvous here in Park City last week with some possible 'lights at the end of the tunnel' becoming a bit clearer for this 5 year passion project directed by @renan_ozturk and @freddiewilkinson. Scouring footage until the wee hours of the night, the interwoven story threads scribbled across our wall, momentum building. So much heart and soul in this rich story that we hope will find its way out into the world soon! @austin_siadak #sanctityofspace #inthespiritofwashburn 1mon

taylorfreesolo Recently a few young women have reached out to connect. (lucky me!!) Like modern day pen pals, we talk about anything really. Risk taking. Rocks. Books. What health means to them. What challenges women face in male dominated industries. Some are about to graduate high school and want to explore alternative life paths and careers. I don't have any well-reasoned answers. I do have some intense experiences and big failures that have taught me a bit about how to move forward on my own trajectory. And in a way that is balanced and self-sustaining, not too chaotic or constantly stressful. What I'm left feeling lately is just how important it is to have *trust* that it's ok to innovate a path forward. The industries of media, education, science, activism, and 'adventure' are changing. It's a collective work-in-progress to figure out what value we can provide to this planet and our communities, and how value is fairly returned. Equal pay and job stability are real issues and I don't want to encourage anyone to put themselves at risk by taking creative uncertain paths, but if done concurrently with other work, it's possible to explore all kinds of opportunities. Anyway. Cheers to feminine friendships! And thanks @shaye_dean for pulling me away from the computer to ride zee bicycle with the fur babies. @yeticycles @revo @pavepara @baloointhewild 1mon
