tavitulle "The love is gone.
The poetry in bricks is lost.
We want to drag into building some of the poetry of countdown, orbital helmets,
discord of mechanical body transportation methods and leg walking
Love gone." From ARCHIGRAM, a book chronicling the late architecture journal of the 1960s

tavitulle An entry from Joseph Cornell's dream diary:
"September 11, 1967
Exquisite dreaming — life size pastel (?) drawing or painting of a young girl — browns high-lighted with white on an easel — I was rubbing in the white finishing touches — then it was as thought the girl came to life + was going away for good — very sad — would she write to me?"

tavitulle When we were almost done at Fondazione Prada yesterday I turned around to look at this Joseph Cornell box a second time. I don't remember how I first learned about him but there are a number at the Art Institute in Chicago where I grew up and I do remember when I went there for the first time as a person who wanted to be moved by things and not for a field trip or school-related mandate. His boxes felt out of place in a big blank museum; they belonged in my blanket fort. At the time I found them pleasing for how they resembled the same kind of piecing together that made up my time alone, but they're sadder to me as I grow up and see the cracks in the similarly intricate systems that we construct to understand things. It's quietly devastating to witness any attempt to contain the world inside a frame.
Michael Chabon wrote when he compared these to Wes Anderson movies that the most crucial part isn't what's inside the box, but the box itself, the outline--the need for every detail to relate to one another, the orderly preservation of whimsy. I believe fear of loss is a common cause of collecting, nook-making, and other forms of resistance against all randomness. This tendency seeps into my every outfit, every old blog post, every journal entry, every Rookie theme and Yearbook.

  •   katersrichmond My all time favourite artist. Each box is so delicate and intricate and lovely, I feel like I've been invited into a very warm, intimate space in just looking at them. For me, that's one of the key words with Cornell - invitation. There's an inkling of hospitality that I find resonates in his work. Very beautiful. 3w
  •   tonirica_art Yes. His boxes are beautifully bittersweet, fruits of a mostly difficult life of a complicated, talented human being. His boxes to me are like mausoleums of my childhood dreams and alternate lives i will never live. You write so beautifully, thank you for sharing your thoughts. #josephcornell 3w
