sydneyliann "Mama I know that you love me but I get so angry at you when you don't play the Lego challenge with me. Only Isla wants to play the Lego challenge with me, but she's not a master builder yet and she eats batman!" - Everett on feelings and little sisters 1d

  •   sydneyliann @shannsun we used an assisted cry-it-out method where you let them know you're there in 5,10,15 minute increments until they fall asleep. You don't touch them. Only peek your head in and let them know they're doing great and that they're not alone. The idea is that you're letting them develop the skill of falling asleep by themselves while lovingly supporting them through it. It worked SO well for us! The first night she took an hour (with those checks in between) to fall asleep. Of course, she woke up constantly the first night and we checked and rechecked in with her. But it wasn't STRAIGHT crying. She was learning. And the second night was drastically different. Muuuuch longer windows of sleep. Best of luck to you! I highly recommend the book I blogged about :) 1w
  •   laviedehart We didn't plan to sleep train until later in the first year, but one day at about 4.5 months he decided that he was done with the swaddle and refused to be rocked to sleep, it was a rough two weeks, but now at 7 months he falls asleep on his own only waking once a night and takes 3 solid naps. 1w
  •   adelinehopkins @shannsun we followed the Mommy Shorts sleep training story with my son (google it, perfect example of a detailed success story) and The Happy Sleeper sleepwave. The take away w that book is to really, honestly commit. Best! 1w
  •   emfonz Hold the phone. I just read your blog for the first time in a bit (computer probs and the like) and I was like "what the?! Does she live in Boise?! Does she want to meet at Goldy's for breakfast?!" So holler at yer girl living in Boise (Eagle actually) 1w
  •   gydilein I did it similar to sydney. But it was only onetime feeding at that time between 2 and 4 a.m. and we needed one week. I started with shortening the time of feeding. Then going in his room every 2, 5, 10 minutes. So the first two nights I lost sleep of 3 hours and then it was nearly done. 1w

sydneyliann I wrote a post on the sleep-training method we used for Isla and our experience with it, if you happen to be in that chapter of your life! It's up on the blog; link in the link place 🏻 1w

  •   sewsewsage Anytime a parent leaves their child to cry, while not in their arms for more than five minutes, brain damage begins to occur. It has a direct impact on their relational capabilities for the long-term, anxiety levels, and over all less healthy than a child who is not left to cry it out under any sense of the term. This method is very old-school and has since been disproven by many experts on brain development. An infant's brain is neurologically incapable of what is trying to be "taught" here. What is actually happening is you're teaching them when they cry, it doesn't matter to you and you won't answer their cries for assistance in emotionally calming themselves, which is WHY they’re crying - to tell you they need your help. Why else would a child cry, if not to express their emotions? How often do we think it’s appropriate or socially acceptable to leave an adult crying alone? I think we naturally tend to go to that person and comfort them in whatever way we can. So I pose the question: why is it any different with infants and children? Why do we expect something from them we wouldn’t want for ourselves? I am not judging anyone’s parenting here, far be it from me to think that is at all within my right to do. Rather, I am suggesting this particular parenting choice is dangerous and best left back in the 1800s, where it began… If you’re interested in a more gentle approach, you would appreciate Dr. Jay Gordon’s sleep coaching approach, which never leaves the child, but does teach them to self-soothe in a healthy, emotionally available and safe environment. Dr. Sears also has a lot of gentle suggestions for teaching a child to self-soothe. Crying In Arms is yet another option. Ultimately, giving babies what they really need benefits them (and you) in the long-term, not just the short-term. Children whose needs are met during those times of crying are naturally more independent than children who are left to cry it out. Something to consider. We all love our babies and only want what is best for them now and in the future. 1w
  •   thedreamcreate Ohhh girl, sleep training is the stuff of miracles! You never think you'll need it until you're up 6 times a night My guy started doing 12 hours at 6 months. It's makes me a better mom and wife, and he's sooo happy when he wakes up now! You're a great mom for giving her the tools for a good nights sleep! 1w
  •   donelleohio Just bought the book- crossing my fingers it's full of magic! @sydneyliann 1w

  •   sydneyliann @audswan I mean how many ways are there to say that "link in profile" anyway. We've got to recycle 🏻 4d

  •   rachelkrutsch @haley_kunz perhaps. However, I have been reading this woman's blog for years, LOVE HER - and I know full well that everybody goes out and buys everything that she says, she wears, and does. And I just wanted to provide a different perspective about this game, before everybody rushed out and did it just because Sydney did. As I said, I almost bought the gate myself. I am grateful for the reviews that I read that startled me. When I looked at the game itself, I was mortified. This is not fun, this is meanness disguised as a game. This is not what the world needs. No hard feelings, still love the blog. Just concerned this game will continue to grow in popularity because people do not know what it is about. 4w

sydneyliann Isla and her dad are taking their turn with the flu today. I'm laying here on a big pile of pillows/comforter waiting for the the victims of last night to finish drying and watching her fall asleep in the reflection on my phone. And Everett, who's pretty much had to fend for himself this morning, just voluntarily brought me a pile of wipes and a change of clothes for Isla just "in case her throat comed up again"
Soaking up the cuddles from this delicious fuzzy head and grateful for a boy who loves his sister so
