suuwoosultan Christmas has always been a holiday celebrated carelessly. For millennia, pagans, Christians, and even Jews have been swept away in the season’s festivities, and very few people ever pause to consider the celebration’s intrinsic meaning, history, or origins. History lesson: prior to the 4th century, Roman Pagans celebrated a holiday from Dec 17-25 called Saturnalia. It was a holiday of lawlessness durning which Roman courts were closed & no citizen would be punished for any wrong doing. The communities would select one person and torture them by force feeding throughout the celebration. Other common activities included widespread intoxication; going from house to house while singing naked; rape and other sexual license; and consuming human-shaped biscuits (still produced under the alias: Ginger bread men). At the festival’s conclusion, December 25th, Roman authorities believed they were destroying the forces of darkness by brutally murdering the selected innocent man or woman. . In the 4th century, Christian leaders, in hopes of converting masses, promised Roman pagans they could continue the traditions of Saturnalia once they converted. Stephen Nissenbaum, professor history at the University of Massachussetts, Amherst, writes, “In return for ensuring massive observance of the anniversary of the Savior’s birth by assigning it to this resonant date, the Church for its part tacitly agreed to allow the holiday to be celebrated more or less the way it had always been.” The earliest Christmas holidays were celebrated by drinking, sexual indulgence, singing naked in the streets (a precursor of modern caroling), etc. . . But none of that matters. I was just tryna pose one time for the Gram. Happy Holidays! 3mon
  •   tomrockefeller You're the best Harris. See you in the Iron Fort. 3mon

  •   dan2steezy_ The wise has spoken 3mon
  •   eljosecito hi fellow Cal Bear! - thank you for your thoughts! That being said, I really hope you back up your criticisms on this very special holiday to me and my family (including your girlfriend) with actions and don't accept presents during this time as to not celebrare carelessly as you say. If i am not mistaken, you celebrated the holiday last year at your girlfriends house. Warm regards, Jose (Jenny's Cousin). I am happy to engage in more dialogue if you're willing. Happy to meet up for coffee or come to my alma matter - Cafe Milano was my favorite when I was at Cal. Go Bears! 3mon
  •   suuwoosultan @eljosecito I wouldn't call them criticisms, rather an observation of history. & I have no issue with the present day celebration of the holiday as it has become more of a materialistic/consumerist holiday such as Black Friday and holds little to no religious value among the masses. Therefore, I feel comfortable partaking in gift giving and receiving as it brings joy to those involved. & we can for sure meet up and discuss this subject over some Milano coffee! Happy Holidays fellow Bear! 3mon

suuwoosultan There's something about mac & cheese that tickles my heart. Maybe it's the shape of the macaroni; they look like they're smiling back at me, begging to be eaten. Maybe it's the cheese; loads of ooey gooey goodness that give nothing but pleasure to my mouth. Maybe it's the smell. A smell of garlic fresh from Gilroy and sharp Gouda that'll make the hairs on the back of your neck rise. Or perhaps it's the chunks of hot dogs; meticulously hidden under the bread crumbs and cheese just waiting to be discovered and devoured like an egg on Easter. Whatever it may be, let us rejoice at this beautiful dish. #homeroom510 6mon

suuwoosultan I grew up hating soccer. I thought it was only for Mexicans and fob Afghans. I became a fan three years ago when I came across a Messi highlight video on YouTube. He made the game look so easy that I thought if I ever decided to play, I'd be decent. I played for the first time in January of this year & boy did I suck haha. I still do, but I'm getting better every day. Can't ask for much more. Let's see what my mixtape next year looks like haha. #JogaBonito #SMS 6mon

suuwoosultan On Dec 24, 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. At the time, we had no centralized army, no system of defense, and no unity within tribes. The government was crooked and Soviet-led. Ahmad Shah Massoud led the resistance. He and less than 1,000 under equipped guerrillas from the Panjshir Valley sought out to defeat over 150,000 Soviet Soldiers. In my opinion, his story is more worth telling than the Spartans' story. The Spartans fought sword and shield vs sword and shield. Ahmad Shah Massoud fought against tanks, and bombs. He and his soldiers, the Mujahideen used Guerilla warfare to weaken the soviet infrastructure by hiding out in the mountains and ambushing soviet supply convoys. He knew the longer the war dragged on, the more weary the soviets would grow. Over the course of the 9 year war, Massoud was able to unify tens of thousands of Afghan soldiers and freedom fighters all from different tribes. As our numbers grew, the soviets morale decreased. They withdrew their troops. Leaving behind everything. Abandoned Soviet tanks still remain on roads in Afghanistan. Following the war, Afghanistan was left in ruins with no leader. The citizens looked desperately for any sort of order and in came the heavily funded Taliban led by Osama Bin Laden. They promised to rebuild our great country's infrastructure and start a government the people would support. Instead, they enforced a form of radical Islam that terrorized our people. They shut down schools and hospitals. They eradicated music and dance. They made women cover themselves. They killed anyone who opposed. Ahmad Shah Massoud was against all of this and spent his last days battling the Taliban in a civil war. He was assassinated on September 9, 2001 by a Taliban soldier posing as a journalist. RIP to the Lion of Afghanistan. Your legacy lives on. My dad never cries, but every year on the anniversary of your death, he sheds a few tears for you. Thank you. 7mon

  •   elanbarel Taliban/hamas/isis all same shit. 6mon
  •   suuwoosultan @elanbarel that's very true, but you forgot to mention another terrorist organization: Israel/IDF. All aforementioned groups were created by the U.S. They should all be wiped off the face of this earth. Especially ISIS & Israel as they are the two most gruesome, ruthless and inhumane terror organizations in the world today. 6mon
