superamit I just finished 10 days on a silent meditation and Buddhism retreat, up in the hills of Dharamsala.

No devices, no media, no talking outside of a 1 hour Buddhism discussion group each day.

I'm so glad I did it and plan to integrate some of what I learned of meditation practice and the ethics and philosophy of Buddhism into my life.

superamit I'd been walking by this roadside barber for a week thinking: when would someone need a haircut AND a taxi at the same time? (But man, if they did, this place would be MAD EFFICIENT.) And then today I found myself needing a haircut and a taxi to the airport for the next day... and I knew exactly where to go.

For 80 rupees he gave me a fine shave and threw in a head massage, too. He told me during the winter months business is slow, so taxi bookings help pay the rent for his shop.

He finished up and I booked a taxi for the morning. On my way out, he gave me his number. Then he told me his name: Amit.

It was meant to be.

superamit Hiked 5 hours Saturday, 2 above the snow-line, to reach Triund Hill. It's early in the season so it was icy atop several feet of snow.

Underprepared with just sneakers, I stayed overnight in a concrete room (no water, no electricity, no heat) in the home of the kind owner of the tea stall at top.

View was alright though. :)

superamit 3 days of rain ended last night in a misty sunsetty dreamscape that I couldn't even hope to capture fully.

Today I'm up early to spend the day hiking to Triund. (Thx for the suggestion @mscheminske)

superamit Spent 11.5 hours on the train, sat 4 hours pressed into an insanely crowded bus, then another bus, jammed into the trunk of a jeep with 6 others, then hiked up and down hills until I arrived... here.

This is my view for the week.
I'm in McLeod Ganj in Himachal Pradesh, home to the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Government in Exile, and 100,000 Tibetans.

In a week I go up a bit farther to start a 10 day Buddhist meditation silent retreat. I'm excited and nervous!

superamit A fond to Matheran. We'll miss your ridiculous sunsets every night.

Today we take a "toy" train down the side of the hill station at sunrise, then another train to Mumbai. From there, I'm headed to Delhi and Jessa's on to Goa.

superamit The soil here is a gorgeous red laterite. High iron (and aluminum) content helps give it its color. 4w

superamit Matheran is a hill station set up by the British to provide respite during the blazing Indian summers.

The smallest hill station, it lies ~100Km from Mumbai and offers dense forest, beautiful trails, horses for rent, and a complete lack of motorized vehicles.

We'll be here for about a week.

superamit Good morning, Mumbai.

Today's our last full day in this city. Tomorrow we head to Matheran, a nearby hill station that has banned all private motorized transport.
