stevint I think it's important to tell real stories. Stories that entice and invigorate. Stories that inspire to give you a feeling of wanting to be there. #capturerad 3d

stevint I love shooting in the back country in the winter, it presents a whole new dynamic from technical camera aspect as well as mountain sense.
A few tips to consider when shooting out back. A spare battery is your friend. I try to always carry one close by either in my jacket or a warm place. The cold is hard on gear especially batteries so keeping them warm will help to leave you not stranded with no power. Depending on the separation from the subject I'm photographing I'll decide what type of focus mode I want to shoot, one shot versus ai-servo; manual versus automatic. There is a list of other things that go into play like tracking sensitivity, focus points, impact of light, FPS and so forth but I'm just keeping to the basics. Sometimes snow blowing, falling, or kicked up from a subject can throw your tracking off from where you want to actually focus, especially depending on the background separation. In situations like this is when I like to use one shot or pre focus and switch to manual to give me most control on getting a sharp subject. Be diligent with your metering as snow can trick your camera. The histogram can be a great friend sometimes.
Last but not least educate yourself about snow dynamics and snow pack. Surround yourself with people with the same mountain sense because in the end they may be saving your life one day or vice versa. That bond of trust is a tying knot that is a special consideration to have, especially in the winter season. Mind the mountains and they will mind you.#capturerad

  •   davey_gravy I need to learn to shoot more like this. Shooting an auto is great, but I want to learn how to shoot in manual, I feel like there is an art to getting a photo to where you want it when shooting vs doing that in post. 3d
