stacybassphoto ...and what a difference a day can make.
19 years ago on August 26, my life (and that of many others) was forever altered. It was a pristine blue bird sky, not unlike today's. It still feels strange and more than coincidental that I was listening to Marc Cohn's Ghost Train on my portable CD player when I heard the news. "Everybody talks about some fateful day
And I guess that this was mine
I may be here to tell some kind of story
But I think it's gonna take a little time
(That's all right)" Marc's music was always a favorite and that day, it became a touchstone. Forever linked to the worst day of my life. And also a source of comfort and understanding.
I wish I could say that it is easier. Or better. It's really not. It's different though. Still close but also far away. Milestones large and small- like yesterday's first day of High School for Emmy- happen. And he is still not here to experience the joy. Each incredible moment. The highs and the lows.
Every day, I consciously do my best to honor his legacy and the great big head start he gave me to make a big and beautiful life. I strive to be kind and caring; the very best wife, mother, daughter... friend. And every day, the seemingly limitless missing still courses through me.
No matter how hard I squeeze or hold on or wish or long or pray or imagine, I can't recast that day. Instead, I spend a lot of time looking for my Dad around me. In my children. In every sunrise and sunset. In every skyscape, too. That connection is still very real and guiding.
I am writing this because in a very small way, it helps. And I hope that it can also serve as a reminder to all of you to be present in your every day Those small moments really matter.

  •   nancytauck How poignant and rich your words, they brought tears to my eyes and a familiar feeling to my heart. I realized, as the days of this month rolled by, that in the midst of all the regular summer activities that come with four kids, my Mom's presence was lingering, as if she were next to me. Losing her in April of 2011, it did not make a great deal of sense to me, but I simply enjoyed my private thoughts. My close friend interrupted a random conversation we were having and asked me if I think if my Mom often. I burst into tears, she's invaded my dream somehow?! How does she know that this reunion has happened? Startled by my tears (not one to cry much), she apologized. I then told her of these recent feelings as, as if she was here again with me. She said she sensed this and had to ask. How much I miss her, how she loved sitting quietly just watching my kids, play, laugh, tell her about a rock they found, listen to them sing or play an instrument or simply just sit and be her beautiful grand kids. Yes, these moments deserve the same attention and gratitude that she gave them. I thank you Stacy for writing such a tribute to the love and loss of a parent. I remember yours and knowing that place, of longing. I pray for you and myself. I pray that we always find time to stop and see the important moments that happen in that "regular" day, when we least expect them to. My Mom would have turned 96 8/22. I love and miss her!! We are so blessed to have had such wonderful parents! God bless you and your family! 6d
