slashash I never ever ever ever ever take my being able to stay home with the kids for granted. I genuinely praise my Father everyday that I have the freedom to be home with Robey and Aubrey. This rainy morning helps me to see that I can stay in my pjs and sip green tea and quite possibly not start school til 2:00 this afternoon. I feel like homeschooling helps me see it better, too. The freedom. Freedom from time and standards and every day being the same. Every day can be different with new, creative ways of learning, focusing on one subject versus all of them if needed, and the freedom to enjoy being with the kids all the time. Now if only I can find a regular babysitter. That'd be great, too #dontmindmyhusbandssleepingbag #hestartedanewhobby #survivaltrips 3d
  •   jacyoverstreet @_anss I was actually homeschooled and while I'm not going to homeschool my own children someday (my husband is a teacher & I'm the communications director for our school district which happens to be really good), I did have a positive experience overall. But, I think it's all about your parent(s) and how they balance structure and flexibility, and also making sure to balance academic rigor with socialization and real world skills. For my sister and I, my mom created structure where we were up and ready to start school at a specific time most days, and in general followed a fairly set time range for school each day. We also attended what's called a co-op one day per week that gave us that in-school experience. Where the flexibility came into play was that we were both able to play two instruments and take lessons and practice in the middle of the day, which kind of broke up simply sitting at a table doing a lesson. We also got to go on family vacations at random times of the year rather than being limited to spring break, summer break, etc. So I think my parents created really great structure and work ethic in that our school was very organized and structured, but flexibility in that we got to explore more creativity and see the world more than we would have been able to. Sadly, there are many cases where homeschooling does not turn out this way and that gives it a bad rap, but my sister and I (and our good childhood friends) have all turned out to be very hard working and successful adults that adjusted easily. I'm sorry for such a long explanation, but I wanted to share a personal experience from the perspective of an adult :) 3d
  •   noni_bo Btw, I kinda think those survival trips are genius. Do you have any info on where to find out more? My husband is totally getting into it. He is on pinterest every night looking at stuff. It's hilarious. 3d
  •   _anss @jacyoverstreet I love your response! THAT sounds like an idea environment. I totally agree that some are doing it the right way (well balanced) and some are doing it for the wrong reasons. It sounds like you had an overall awesome upbringing and homeschool experience! 3d
  •   slashash @jacyoverstreet you took the words out of my mouth. I was homeschooled as well @_anss and had the same experience. We knew what time we had to be up and ready for school and could not do anything til that and chores were done so it was great motivation to wake up early. It definitely depends on the parents/parenting. Our neighbors were homeschooled(6 kids as well) growing up and they were very rigid with their schedule and were with school and chores by 9 am. They're dad was a doctor so I'm sure his work ethic played a big part in that. My family's motto was always 'be flexible' because everyday was different from yesterday. That's the beauty of homeschooling, too, is what you personally want to make of it :) 3d
  •   thetwobecomeone Sometimes I wonder how my mother did it, but I loved being homeschooled! Our days were super haphazard and it wasn't uncommon for us to start late. It allowed us to be kids and actually enjoy learning. Now I'm in medical school and I love it! @_anss Medical school is super demanding but I think homeschooling allowed me to develop passion and drive and that's what keeps me going, as opposed to having learned habit in a regular school. Keep up the hard work @slashash!! 3d
  •   dianelamoureux I love all these comments on homeschooling, my son is at a private Christian school right now for kindergarten but I have considered homeschooling. I'm also about to graduate with a master's in education so I could give them their state testing etc. @slashash where do you go every day with your kids so that you're not home all the time? Do you have a co-op or field trips etc? 2d
  •   fallthyme I just graduated from homeschool, and loved every minute. Worth every second. 2d
  •   slashash @dianelamoureux we are apart of a co op that meets once a week and has the classroom setting with a teacher for 3 hours. We also meet up with other homeschool friends at least once a week for a hang out day. Aubrey has ballet and Robey will be starting soccer back up in a few weeks. Our week is full with other appointments and such so it goes by quickly. :) 2d

slashash I switched out my cowhide for the wool rug that was in our bedroom. I'd like to think it'll stay white for a long time, but I think that's just the coffee speaking #ashleyshome 4d

slashash Having a few minutes of silence while daddy wrestles with Robey before bed(it's a dude thing) and we can watch Downton Abbey together. FUN FACT: I hope Dewey doesn't see this but he LOVES Downton abbey and could easily sit through any romantic comedy or drama with me. He may be a fierce man's man, but he gets in touch with his feminine side when necessary #downtonabbeyisnecessary 3w
  •   alexismorriscampbell Great seeing you today! And having Aubrey in class @slashash 3w
  •   slashash @lovelyamy27 I am! Doing it a little differently this time. I did liquids for 40 hours. YIKES! Haha I think I will still try just liquids for a meal or two a day and stay away from meats and sweets. You? 3w
  •   slashash @alexismorriscampbell it was great to see you! She was so excited when Dewey got home and showed him all of her 'moves' :) 3w
  •   alexismorriscampbell Aw! So cute! @slashash 3w
  •   katschmelz @slashash dans the same way. We watched The Devil Wears Prada the other night cuz HE chose it. 3w
  •   lovelyamy27 Wow! Go you!! Yes I am but I'm doing it until the end of the month. Eating everything that I can while doing the fast. I'm having sweet withdrawals but replacing the craving with healthier options and really really trying to let this become an overall change. I eat way too much bread and sweets so I'm trying to discipline myself through this month and praying I have self control for me to make better decisions. 3w
  •   lovelyamy27 But I'm following all guideline for the Daniel fast. It's rough at first but I really do enjoy this time of the year. Fresh beginnings and re-examining my spiritual life etc I'm digging deep this year. I don't want to just exist and/or settle if that makes sense. 3w
