sharphoto Skate magazines have always been a vital part of the British scene for a multitude of reasons.
Since I was a yoot growing up in rural Northamptonshire, where skateboarding consisted of a rectangular section of Tarmac outside the local sports hall, magazines like
BMX action bike, RAD, Skateboard!, Skate Action, System, Document, Kingpin and Sidewalk gave me something to look forward to and get stoked on each month.
The skaters that made and still make the magazines, the skaters that occupy the pages of the magazines and the skaters that subscribe to, buy and read the magazines are all part of the UK scene and beyond.
Whether you shred on the regs or are a little more reserved in your direct skate participation, decent magazines are important because they are a 'barometer of what's good' (thanks @kevparrot). I don't just mean skaters or tricks, but everything surrounding skateboarding like comps, events, parks, shops and tours etc.
After almost 20 years in print, Sidewalk magazine is going online. This obviously sucks from the point of view that there will no longer be a physical mag, but it doesn't mean that Sidewalk will be any less full of cutting edge skateboarding.
There will still be the same objective commentary on all things in the UK scene via the wit of @beeps1973, the on point art direction and layout you've come to expect from @sidewalkhorse, the same regular features like 'Haunts', 'Word' and 'Witness' incorporating the sublime photography of @cj_photo, @samuelashley, @reeceleung, @joelpeck, @ashwilsonphoto, @swampyharold and many more, not forgetting the banging edits and videos toiled over for months by @ryan_m_gray.
Props have to go to other luminaries without whom this amazing entity would not be what it is today: @wigworland @oliverbarton @neilchester101 @harrybastard #chrisforder #jimpeskett #jonrobson and #brunothedog. As a good mate said to me yesterday: 'Skateboarding doesn't belong to anyone. It owes no one a living'. This for me embodies Sidewalk and is the reason that while these humans are still at the helm, then the UK scene is in good hands.
