My Poppop was a character. For me, his grandson, he was almost iconic.
As far back as I can remember he was always the grey haired alter kocker we all knew and loved. A quintessential old fart who would give you grandpa pinches and tell you war stories from Okinawa. He was a man's man of the greatest generation, like my own personal John Wayne.
There was no mistaking his tough guy appearance, but he was an artist at heart. He'd whittle you a handmade wooden, lead filled baton to keep you safe in your car. And then he'd elegantly etch your name into it with great care and stain it just right.
Pop was a 2nd generation carpenter and all around handyman. There was always some corner of our house that he was hammering away at. Or he'd be out in the garden getting some tomatoes or veggies ready for one of the hearty soups he'd cook. He loved art and he often painted his own. He always had a camera around his neck, taking pictures of the family. I will never forget the custom gold eagle hood ornament he installed on his little black sports car. He was our very own Renaissance man with a signature style all his own.
He loved a good joke and always had a few of his own to dish out. He was a bit rough around the edges, fingers always taped up from some tool or saw that got the best of him. He had a short fuse and was sorta mad at the world but actually just a big softie with the heart to match. He was always the first person in the room to ask you how you were feeling, even when he wasn't feeling too great himself.
I'll miss his all too familiar stories. I'll miss the way he always asked for a sip or a nibble of whatever drink or food I happened to have in front of me. I'll miss the way he smiled and lit up any time his children and grandchildren were around.
Thank you for every swing of that hammer and every laugh we shared. I love you Pop. RIP
