saverome Empire's edge. The city of Aquincum (in modern day Buda of Budapest, Hungary) began as a Roman military camp. By the 2C AD it developed into a large town, with all of the typical urban Roman structures (baths, aqueducts, forum)- and boasting 2 amphitheaters. The emperor Trajan made it the capital of the province Pannonia Inferior, which saw a lot of action, as Rome conquered Dacia (modern day Romania). •   noragaribotti Beautiful photograph, with an interesting history. 5d
  •   jpe01234 i'd always wondered where Dacia was 🌍 5d
  •   oreotalpa @berte3150, it's in Óbuda, a short day trip - there's also a civic amphitheatre and a military amphitheatre, as well as other smaller ruins around town. I think the museum may not be open in winter. It's really fantastic, imo one of the best things in Budapest! 5d
  •   saverome @oreotalpa thanks a lot! Was there once - but will return! 5d
  •   roxella66 Awesome 5d
  •   oreotalpa The museum also has the best preserved Roman-era hydraulic organ found to date - really incredible artifact. @saverome 5d

saverome Roman Carsulae. One of Umbria's great Roman sites, flourishing in the 1C AD. Here the Augustan Arch of S Damiano and round tomb, outside the city center, along the Via Flaminia. These monuments and others have been re-erected (#anastylosis) creating an impressive visit #meetrome #recycledhistory #reconstructedhistory #ancientromelive 1w

saverome Mission accomplished. The Pyramid of Cestius newly restored, but there's plenty left to preserve in Rome: tuff monuments not covered by brick or marble, e.g., Servian Walls, S Omobono and Largo Argentina #meetrome #recycledhistory #reconstructedhistory #ancientromelive 1w

saverome Colossal Claudius, from Lanuvium with the attributes of Jupiter, in the Vatican Museums. A great collection just got better. I just downloaded the free #PatrumAPP from the Patron for the Arts of the Vatican Museums. www.vatican-patrons.org This unique app offers a platform for conversation, news, crowdfunding, and direct contact with the curators that take care of the collection. It's a fabulous way to learn more about Rome's rich heritage, the enormous collection, and participate / contribute to its preservation. #ancientromelive #recycledhistory #reconstructedhistory 2w

saverome Kiss it good-bye. It's official. The exposed hypogeum of the Colosseum visible in this photo will be entirely covered over. The Ministry of Culture approved the project this week, after months of evaluation. The Colosseum of antiquity had a wooden floor (arena from the sand - harena in Latin- that covered the planks) supported by the now exposed stone and brick walls. Over time they they have deteriorated. The 18.5 million euro project won't just be a covering (the new floor that covers one third of the hypogeum cost far less) to project the substructures but also accommodate the public for new events. Let the games begin!! Let me know your thoughts! #ancientromelive #recycledhistory #reconstructedhistory #meetrome 4w
  •   bobby_lamps @apparentlyjack hope you get there before they cover it up! This is @saverome - a great insight into the brilliant nuggets of Rome and what you have to see! 2w
  •   kathpalanca Aww was hoping to see it when we visit this September. Would you know when they will start covering it up? Thanks for sharing again and great feed! @saverome 2w
  •   gabimaya77 I believe that protecting the past, particulary the Colosseum, is the best way to deal with the future. The hypogea are the Mysterious soul of Ancient Rome. I guess it interesting the idea to cover It with glass...It would be nice to visitors. 2w
  •   gabimaya77 @saverome They also allow visits in the basements? 2w
  •   myselfkumail In love with this. 5d

saverome It's....complicated- the relationship between contemporary and Ancient Rome. To give you an idea, here's a shot from the Velia hill, site of the new exit from the Roman Forum through the Basilica of Maxentius. As you walk down this pictured path, toward the restored Colosseum, you see on the right the foundations of the Temple of Venus and Roma, the remaining portico columns reinforced in response to the Metro C line taking place behind the yellow wall, on the left. #meetrome #recycledhistory #reconstructedhistory #ancientromelive #colosseumfordays 1mon
  •   arylovegood So they are building a C line? Interesting. 1mon
  •   spidyrella So close to it! They will probably find some interesting discoveries! 1mon
  •   droniroma @arylovegood actually, they're still trying to figure out how much money they can spill out from public finances. No guarantee at all we'll see the future section of C line run under Colosseum, neither. 1mon
  •   arylovegood @droniroma I see. I would prefer they didn't put the line under the colosseo, but who am i. 1mon
  •   loveitaly_org I heard guides telling that "Rome is like a lasagna". Quite appropriate, isn't it? 1mon
  •   italymagazineofficial Yeah, you have a point there 4w

saverome Colosseum restoration. Here scaffolding on the inner wall. On this side, the outer wall is missing, destroyed by a massive earthquake in the 14C. The wall being repaired is largely a reconstruction afterward. The outer wall? Where did it go? Reused as papal Rome's Home Depot for many years. #recycledhistory #reconstructedhistory #meetrome #ancientromelive #colosseumfordays 1mon

saverome Domitian's palace. Here the "stadium" or viridarium - garden space. Enclosed by multi-level porticoes, lined with fountains, it's what made the Domus Flavia a palatial home of the emperor for centuries. #meetrome #recycledhistory #reconstructedhistory #ancientromelive 1mon

saverome Going round the bend. Scaffolding on the exterior of the Flavian Amphitheater winds around the corner. Sponsored by @Tods and overseen by the Superintendency the project is a milestone for corporate sponsorship of heritage sites in Italy. Recently I've heard more chatter on the quality of the work- would love to see verification of the results published. Obviously the monument hasn't looked this good in years. It remains to be seen how the Colosseum weathers the elements, traffic, pollution in the coming years. #colosseumfordays #reconstructedhistory #reconstructedhistory #ancientromelive #meetrome 1mon

saverome Marble pavement from a single room, late 4C AD (uncovered in 2012-2014). Our conservator colleagues did a fantastic job this season to reveal the marble decoration and stabilize the floor. The original room was subdivided in the early medieval period and filled with debris from workshop activity (which preserved the marble decoration). What an extraordinary find! We are still trying to figure out why such a "domus" structure is present outside Ostia's walls. It probably has something to do with the paleochristian development in this neighborhood. Stay tuned! #meetrome #recycledhistory #reconstructedhistory #ancientromelive 1mon

saverome Pons Fabricius, 1C BC. It is incredible that this bridge is still standing. Think of all the centuries of conservation and neglect! Today I lectured on this spot to a great group of international conservators participating in a heritage conference. I spoke about the various media platforms I use, and we shared ideas on how to further our conservation aims with a global audience. You can check out my #periscope video, too. #meetrome #recycledhistory #reconstructedhistory #ancientromelive #ICCROM @unesco 2mon

  •   mimosasinprovidence @saverome ciao, Dr. Arya! Just wanted to say this here (in case you're not in Rome by the time I get to do digs for my degree) that your spots on History Channel "rome: engineering an empire" were parts of what give me daily inspiration in our field. I've been watching your old spots and figured that, with the right tweaking, your knowledge on ancient engineering can be most helpful to not only future general conservation efforts but may also serve as missing keys to green technology. Signed, a plebian who truly admires the work of your career and foundation. 2mon
  •   saverome @mimosasinprovidence thank you very much! 1mon
  •   saverome @maurix76roma 1mon
  •   saverome @beautyitaly I don't usually focus on the negative - but heritage problems exist and need to be pointed out ! 1mon

saverome Forum Transitorium, progress. Finally it seems that the notorious food trucks that always parked daily in front of ancient monuments, like this section of the Forum Transitorium, are finally gone. I think it's a good sign. #meetrome #recycledhistory #reconstructedhistory #ancientromelive 2mon
