saverome Colosseum resplendent.
The conservation project doesn't just include cleaning but also consolidation, stabilization, new fencing around the base (between the arcades), and a new visitor center outside the amphitheater to speedily accommodate visitors on their visit, plus new bathrooms, refreshments, and bookshop. This project should also entail clearing out the piazza in front of the Colosseum of all the undesirable qualities the impede the visitor.

In the Valley of the Temples, in Agrigento - a @UNESCO world heritage site- this still stands overlooking the sea as one of the all-time great 5C BC Greek temples.

saverome I'm so excited about @Instagram's app #Hyperlapse. It's amazing!
Come along with me for a brief journey to the Baroque Duomo of Ortygia, the island of Siracusa.
What's so fascinating to me is that you can see inside and out the reused, original colonnade of the 6C BC Greek temple of Athena. Incredible!

saverome The grand theater of Siracusa.
5C construction with 3C BC modifications- one of the largest Greek theaters. Ancient Roman reformulation then much of it reused for 16C fortifications under the Spanish. Used for performances from 1914 and onward.

saverome Now you see it, now you don't.
A road once passed between the Temple of Vespasian and Temple of Saturn. You may have seen it in the film Roman Holiday.
Excavations in the 70s removed the road to reveal the Clivus Capitolinus road that was the principal route for triumphators to ride up to the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus on the Capitoline hill.

saverome Temple of Apollo -
Greets you as you cross over to the remarkable island of Ortygia.
One of the oldest Greek temples in Sicily (early 6C BC) that lived on as a Byzantine church, mosque, Norman church, barracks, and incorporated into private houses, today it's next to the fish market and is enhanced by new smarter city CNR-IBAM booths. They have great reconstruction videos and other information on the site, also allowing you to take photos and share them online.

This is the center of Ortygia, the island of Siracusa, former Hellenistic period capital of Sicilia (before the Roman conquest). You see the Duomo and Municipal Palazzo constructed out of two Greek temples of Athena (5C BC) and Artemis (late 6C BC)

saverome Caecilia Metella and castrum Caetani.
The late Republican/ Augustan-age travertine tomb of Caecilia: descended from the Metelli clan and married into Crassus' family. The tomb (diameter 30m and height 39m) still looms large in what became known as Capo di Bove along the Via Appia.
By the 13C it became incorporated into a fortification (gray- stonework to the right of tomb) owned by the Caetani family, controlling this area of the Via Appia.

saverome August 19, AD 14- August 19, 2014.
2000 years ago the emperor Augustus died.
Arguably the most influential of Roman emperors he left his mark on the city, the empire, and what we call Western civilization like no other.
He began his career as a teenage upstart, Caesar's heir, and concluded his long life as one of the longest reigning Roman emperors, despite the odds.
He was buried here in his Mausoleum, with references to Etruscan and Roman tombs, as well as Alexander's tomb and the world wonder tomb of Mausolus at Halicarnassus.
The structure currently is slated for restoration, though it is lamentable that it was not completed for the bimillennium of his death anniversary.
For an idea of its original size and splendor look to its copy, the Mausoleum of Hadrian (Castel S Angelo).
For an idea of the impact Augustus made on the city please see the video link in my profile that my organization www.romanculture.org made for the occasion. Also follow @AIromanculture on twitter for coverage on Augustus for the next 40 days, til Augustus' birthday September 23. There are many exhibitions and events opening in the next few weeks, so stay tuned!

saverome Looking back- hasn't changed a bit!
I just picked up two packs of 1920s-30s postcards of Rome from the flea market Porta Portese.
The view of the Basilica Ulpia toward Trajan's Column wedged between the Churches of Maria looks the same (except that now many seagulls have taken up residence!)

saverome Ancient Romans still walk the streets, sort of.
A "centurion" hangs out next to the Column of Trajan, whose narrative scroll contains 2500+ figures carved in low relief narrating the Dacian Wars. The Vittoriano and Campus Martius form the backdrop. Can't ask for much more in mid August.

Great to stroll about this early morning and take in the sleepy city on Ferragosto! (Thanks, Augustus for the holiday!) The first Pantheon was constructed by Agrippa to honor the gods and Augustus.

saverome Domus Aurea explored.
Last month I was invited to a special visit of Nero's Golden House by the Italian Minister of Culture and Tourism @dariofrances to see the scope and scale of the restoration project. It's incredibly involved as the the site was buried and used as foundations for the Baths of Trajan. Today the terme remains and the public park (dirt, grass, trees) above challenge the existence of the Neronian structure. The current project is complex and costly but finally addressing the big issues, like water seepage, once and for all.
The reopening is years away, but much progress has been made.

saverome Keeping cool!
Most of Rome's piazzas have fountains. Hundreds accommodate thirsty tourists and locals alike.
The tradition is far older than these impressive 15-16-17C masterpieces. We can trace back the fountains in Rome's flood plain (Campus Martius) to Agrippa's Aqua Virgo- parts of which still flow.

Preservation issues currently plague the site, but it remains a place that continues to inspire and overwhelm the senses. MiBACT (Italian ministry of heritage and tourism) is on the scene with a lot of promising initiatives. Let's all follow along
