saverome Changing perspective.
Forum Romanum through @olloclip focused on a section of the late antique Rostra on the eastern side of the piazza. To the left, basilica Iulia and to the right, Curia Iulia- both rebuilt after 3C AD fire.

saverome Moved and reused.
The column that once decorated the interior of the Basilica of Maxentius (Constantine) was taken to its current location in front of S Maria Maggiore in 1614 and topped by a statue of Mary. Way to recycle!! #recycledhistory #culturalheritage #meetrome #archaeology #rome

saverome Angkor Wat (Siem Reap, Cambodia) is considered the largest temple complex in the world, constructed in the 12C as a Hindu (then Buddhist) temple and mausoleum of the Khmer ruler Suryavarman II. The massive, sprawling structures resemble an entire city (hence the modern name Angkor Wat, "city of temples") surrounded by a massive moat almost 200m wide on all four sides. The outer wall encloses over 200 acres! It is truly massive- and stunning to see, especially at dawn, from across the moat. So many of the stone carvings of this UNESCO world heritage site are famously at risk; you will see a lot of conservation work being conducted here at Cambodia's most popular tourist site. Imagine a temple that dwarfed the Pantheon. Here is a portion of the Hadrianic Temple of Serapis, on the Quirinal Hill, behind the Gregorian University. This section is over 6 stories tall!

saverome All roads lead to Rome.
From the Capitoline hill you can see both the reopened section of the Clivus Capitolinus sloping road that leads from the forum to the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus and, below it, the newly opened section of the Vicus Iugarius (between Temple of Saturn and Basilica Iulia).
Both represent two very important roads into the Forum- and it's great to have them finally accessible in the archaeological park. Compare with the previous photo.

saverome Vicus Iugarius.
The section that leads into the Forum Romanum has finally opened.
Originating in the Forum Boarium by the Tiber this road culminates between the Temple of Saturn and the newly reopened Basilica Iulia.
The forum visit has become even more magnificent!

saverome Aurelian's Wall.
Realizing Rome's vulnerability in the 3C AD, the emperor had a massive wall circuit constructed around the city, leaving many structures outside.
From the vantage point of the top of the Porta Appia it is possible to survey a great section of the wall, doubled in height by the early 5C AD.

saverome Quintessentially Classic. The Parthenon, dedicated to Athena, stands as a lasting testament to the Athenian achievement in art and architecture. Upon its completion, the 5C BC temple stood as a shining example for all Greek cities, later influenced Rome, and still today continues to hold its power over builders, designers, artists, and visitors from afar. During its long life it has been converted into a church, mosque, and gunpowder warehouse (with disastrous consequences), and ultimately restored and preserved on site for the world. saverome Basilica Iulia
From the Capitoline Hill you can see the ground plan of the law court of Caesar and Augustus (rebuilt in the 3C AD). It's about the size of a football field!
In the distance by the Temple of the Castores, the short end of the basilica is defined by the Vicus Tuscus.
On the other short side, below the Temple of Saturn, passes the Vicus Iugarius - recently opened up to the public this week. The road continued straight down to the Tiber River and early harbor of Rome.
Check it out!
