sarahsophief Dear Media, Stop calling this a ‘migrant crisis’. These people are refugees fleeing for their lives. This is a humanitarian crisis.

Thousands of people have died this year trying to seek safety.
THE WORLD IS EXPERIENCING THE WORST REFUGEE CRISIS SINCE WORLD WAR II.
(EUROPEAN COMMISSION)

Refugees and migrants are making this dangerous journey. And yes, there is a difference.
According to the UNHCR, refugees are people "fleeing armed conflict and persecution." As such, they are protected by international law. The UNHCR estimates that there were some 19 million refugees around the world at the end of 2014. Refugees are often fleeing "situations so perilous and intolerable they cross national borders to seek safety in nearby countries," according to the UN. Those fleeing persecution from the government of Bashar Al-Assad in Syria are considered refugees, for example.
Migrants "choose to move not because of a direct threat of persecution or death, but mainly to improve their lives by finding work, or in some cases for education, family reunion, or other reasons," according to the UN. Migrants could return home safely, if they chose to, and would receive protection from their government. (From Refinery 29 @refinery29)

  •   consciously_naive @lifeless_penguin if the same things were happening here you can be sure we'd all be doing exactly the same thing and trying anything to keep ourselves and our families safe. 2d
  •   oh_dear_ "Genuine British people." I thought this ridiculously gross mentality was reserved for white American men. Thanks for proving me wrong! @lifeless_penguin 2d
  •   sabineheller So far this year only 340,000 refugees have crossed European borders, that's only 0.045 percent of Europe's total population. By contrast Turkey hosts 1.8 million refugees from Syria alone. 2d
  •   sanrmurray @lifeless_penguin hmmm from what I recall it was foreign migrants coming and working in your mills, factories and oil platforms that kept your "genuine British" economy afloat! 2d
  •   thecrossy Try living in Australia we lock them up indefinitely off shore with policy being they cannot be settled on the mainland (apparently to "deter" them from getting in a leaky boat and taking the treacherous journey from Indonesia where many make it to). Instead we want to settle them in poor/ dangerous countries like PNG. We lock up children too! 2d
  •   caitlinbracewell Sharing your shame @thecrossy 2d
  •   anchorsadrift You should donate to Asylum Access and the groups that provide pro bono services to so many of the refugees in countries where the international conventions do not apply - like Thailand. These people languish for years, living a precarious existence, always afraid of being locked up, unable to work to feed their families! 1d
  •   nuaorgana Our mayor in Madrid said that is too many people to become to our country. Im so angry @sarahsophief 1d

sarahsophief My heart is swelling & gaining stretch marks. This photo by my guy @jessepooljesse is everything. I was nervous about having boys. I'm now committed to maintaining their gentleness & broadening their definition of masculinity. The Good Men Project defines the problem and is a great source toward a solution. From their website: "history attests that if a stick thwacks, a punch connects, a war decimates, a bomb detonates, the force behind that violent action will almost invariably be male. Biology + power + opportunity = men are behind most of the violence.....When violence erupts, it is a reminder to me that I must continue to foster the gentleness that defines my son. I must provide him with a life and environment that recognize others’ humanity; I must teach him mercy and forgiveness; I must help my son be a reminder to the world that another type of male exists." •   laulooloo Perfect. Thank you for sharing. Am now following the good men project and thankful for another great online publication. 3d
  •   laulooloo I had a closer look and a good read of some of the good men project pieces and I can't help but feel like there is still a lot of questionable stereotyping in their pieces. A lot of categorising and ideals around what male / females should bring to relationships etc. I'm looking for something that tackles masculinity related issues and delves a bit deeper, and a bit richer. If you come across anything, please share. Thank you. 2d
  •   sarahsophief @laulooloo I agree. I wish I knew of more. There's a real lack on info regarding raising boys, and smart stuff on motherhood/feminism in general. 2d
  •   bridge4th_tattoo Yes and no? Please dont hate me for my 2 cents. I am a fellow of large stature i stand at 6'6 and 300+ , i know because of my size i sometimes make people nervous. So with that in mind i try to live a bit easier than most, Aka gentle giant. As far respect, i do not demand it, but it comes to me. Basically life is a garden you get back what you sow. I treat people almost as if they are a mystery, abd i want to know the facets of each individual. So to my point, i agree with what youre saying, but i was a victim of an abudive female spouse, it went way further than it should have because i kept thinking that abuse and violence are mens issues, but really its a human issue. I just figured it would peter out but it only added to the fire, and a learned trait grew out of hand. 14h
  •   bridge4th_tattoo Please instill gentleness into your son(s), but as men let them know that there is a fairness to life that needs to be defended. Force is not always the answer, but there are not enough positive thinkers these days, Whitman, Theroux, Twain, Lewis. As boys and men they will have to defend themselves as well, its an unfortunate truth. Please dont be harsh with them for being boys. Its ok to defend oneself, as well as walk away, though that is not always an option. 13h
  •   bridge4th_tattoo Now in my life i am an artist, i was bullied for years, then i did some myself, lashing out not wantibg to take it anymore. To finally, i just want everyone to be happy within themselves. Life is so grand and an odd gift, i guess cherish all that you can. 13h
  •   bridge4th_tattoo Sorry for the disjointed rant, this screen is gard to have clear and precise conversation. Be well 13h

sarahsophief Read this badass doctor's answer to Texas' draconian anti-abortion informed consent law: In Texas, abortion doctors are required by law to perform an ultrasound and display and describe the image to their patient before the procedure. But the state can’t mandate that they be happy about this intrusion into the sacred doctor-patient relationship. (Source: Feministing) #StandWithPP #Vote2016 5d
  •   virggal Eternally grateful for people like this! Thank you for sharing... 5d
  •   maehemsez Don't forget that over 50% of abortion providers in the U.S. are independent providers, and this informed consent came from one of them! Stand with PP, but also with the indies! 5d
  •   theignorantsloot @todarbro amazing 5d
  •   erica_dipietra Oh, you are so right! You wouldn't really want them to fully understand what they are doing. That would be totally wrong. 5d
  •   erica_dipietra And if they see the ultrasound of the baby they might change their minds. I know so many people that wish they could have seen that. They are haunted everyday by their baby ghosts. It's just terrible. 5d
  •   erica_dipietra Baby's* 5d

sarahsophief The Immigration Crisis Both In The U.S. And Abroad Is Unspeakably Heartbreaking & Another Reason We Have To VOTE In 2016. Across The Board The GOP Stance On Immigration Is Inhuman. From Today's NY Times: “That’s why I brought them one at a time,” Arturo said in Spanish at the Long Island offices of the boys’ immigration lawyer, “because if something happened to one, at least I would have the other.” The family requested that its last name not be used because of its legal status. #Vote2016 1w
  •   sweetlukamo Oof, I see you receive some comments on this page. I wonder if the supporters of republican immigration rhetoric even realize that the majority of Hispanic immigrants are ancestrally more "American" than their white asses.😑 1w

  •   asia_sartor Thank you for this post. I work in a public health clinic that serves moms and babies and a huge portion of my clients are not here "legally". sarahsophief We Have Much Work To Do! All Equality For ALL Women. #WomensEqualityDay. "August 26 is Women’s Equality Day & the passage of the 19th Amendment, which secured women’s right to vote, on August 26, 1920. It's also a day to acknowledge that the amendment didn’t further the equality of all women.

Women of color routinely faced racism within the women’s suffrage movement. After the passage of the 19th Amendment, state laws and racial discrimination continued to keep women of color from voting. It wasn’t until 1956 that any Native Americans could vote in Utah, and black women remained effectively disenfranchised until the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Even today we continue to see passage of a variety of laws that threaten to prevent women, especially women of color, from voting. "-AAUW Campus Leadership Program's Isabel Geisler.
