sarahsophief Why Are We Not Talking Reproductive Justice & Abortion In The Democratic Debates? It's February, 147 Anti-Choice Bills Have Been Introduced In 2016. In Less Than A Month SCOTUS Will Hear The Most Important Abortion Case In Decades. Why Are We Not Talking About This???

  •   latonyayvette Same thoughts! 1d
  •   misseffiestrange Literally the only political issue I care about/have hope for. Like maybe at least we can save female autonomy in the dark apocalyptic future of rampant violence and racism, plz? At the very least? 1d
  •   shardonnay__ I wish I had that luxury, @misseffiestrange. As a black woman I cannot separate my skin color from my anatomy. This is the issue of feminism without intersectionality and inclusion. 1d
  •   misseffiestrange @shardonnay_ It's definitely a luxury that I did nothing to earn and do my best to appreciate everyday. I don't think feminism can be considered feminism w/o being intersectional. Politically I think we're all screwed but maybe realistically they might leave R v. W alone even as everything else falls apart. Just to clarify my comment 🙂 19h

sarahsophief Lord I Love Them. And I Love How They Remind Me Of All Our Humanity. My Favorite Quote On TheTopic:

About humanity: we carry on because we are loving beyond measure. We have a kind of endurance for care that I have never fully comprehended until this year. As I dug deep into my own wells of selfless, visceral, unquestioning love, deeper than I ever knew I could, I realized that someone had done that for me, and that someone does that for each person that survives infancy.- Courtney E. sarahsophief In The Spirit Of High Frequency Women, I Offer This Poem By @cleowade & An Introduction To The Truth Telling Brilliance Of @misscocomasloco:

Up On AT ONCE (link in bio): Another in our "Shit Together" series about keeping it together from Coco Ochwada.

Here is a snippet:
What do you do for self care?
I walk. A lot. And I stay away from “mummy blogs” and “mummy instagrammers” for the sake of my self esteem. And communicate with friends, both mothers and non. Feeling connected to something over than my 15lb ball of drool. Whom I love dearly. (I hate that as a mother you have to add on the fine print about how you love your kids whenever you make a sarcastic comment, it’s like sarcasm is vetoed because you were super fertile that one time). #stayhuman #feministparenting #atonceonline #cocoochwada #cleowade

sarahsophief Up On AT ONCE: (link in bio) I'm WILD about this piece. Do yourself a favor and read the whole thing!
Rebecca Solnit on the “MOTHER OF ALL QUESTIONS” and whether that question is anyone’s damn business! Girls are born into bodies that our culture see’s as all locked up to eventually be in servitude to everyone but ourselves. There is an expectation of motherhood placed on girls from the moment they are born. As Jia Tolentino says below, The idea of motherhood hovers like a cloud, as do most potentialities that are specific to the female body". There is no “right” way to be a woman. We love what she says here: “There is no good answer to being a woman; the art may instead lie in how we refuse the question”. But just because the question can be answered doesn’t mean that I ought to answer it, or that it ought to be asked. The interviewer’s question was indecent, because it presumed that women should have children, and that a woman’s reproductive activities were naturally public business. More fundamentally, the question assumed that there was only one proper way for a woman to live.

sarahsophief Some Thoughts On The Primaries:
I want to thank my friend and mentor @lizzwinstead (look at her Facebook page for her wonderful thoughts on supporting Sanders in the primary) for helping my clarify my thoughts. I haven't spoken up mostly because I'm listening. Listening should be a big part of this process, I believe. I am a progressive, a progressive who passionately believes in challenging the status quo. I believe in big, inclusive, forward thinking politics and policies and I don't think these are a fiction.
This primary season I am especially proud to be a Democrat. We have two qualified, intelligent, thoughtful, progressives running. Two, albeit, imperfect (as we all are), candidates. I am half Danish and deeply embrace Sander's Democratic Socialism. I want to see how he plans to implement and push this through in the non-homogenous, deeply divided country that the USA is. I'm also a feminist who wants to see a woman president. I want to see a woman speaking strongly on the issues that effect over half the population. I believe this is more than symbolic. I want Clinton to square here progressive stance with her history of advocating for anti-progressive policies that have been deeply harmful to both people and our democracy.
What I can't get behind is seeing sexism and misogyny at work. I'm seeing a lot of it targeting Clinton. As @lizzwinstead said, "It is horrible to watch a strong, qualified woman being marginalized and it's worse to see sexist shit thrown at her from people on the left. I don't indulge it and shut that shit down whenever I see it.". So let's #stayhuman. Keep listening. Pay Attention.
This is what the primary process is for. Lizz said this too, "Primaries are for unpacking everything and taking it all in to hear if someone learned from mistakes, has grown, and has bold new ideas. Then it's on us to demand a true progressive agenda. We have to demand the change we want." Whoever the nominee is, I'm going to campaign LIKE HELL for them. I'm gonna vote like a MOTHERFUCKER. I'm gonna Get Out The Vote with a PASSION. Because there is too much at stake not to .

sarahsophief Up On AT ONCE (link in bio). Talking To Our Kids (And Ourselves) About Body Image. Poem by @nayyirah.waheed
How the hell do we talk to our kids about body image? The messaging they are sent is pervasive. It's everywhere, from that stupid breast enlargement ad on the subway with the melons (New Yorkers, I know you've seen it), to the online games our tweens play, to ads, to magazines, to billboards, to the shows WE watch, they watch, they watch us watching...... It's a minefield. Our kids are constantly exposed the celebration of one body type, typically a thin, white, big boobed variety for girls, and a muscular, ripped, also white, hyper masculine type for boys. And if your child falls somewhere in the gender spectrum, it adds to the cross messaging.
Nicole and I write about these topics because we are grappling with them ourselves. We found these articles and tips helpful. I've found that I can't protect my kids from messages about their bodies, the best I can do is talk to them about it, love my own body, and teach them how to be critical thinkers. Teach them how to root out what is problematic. Teach them that every body is a good body. And always be open to talking about it.
We've Posted Lots Of Great Resources That I've Found Really Helpful! Please Add Any Resources You Love. #atonceonline #feministparenting #stayhuman #kids&bodyimage #raisegirlsandboysthesameway

sarahsophief We Went Hard In The Blizzard And I forgot To Post About This Beautiful Piece Up On AT ONCE (link in bio). I love this piece for the snow. The close quarters can drive you mad. But the madness is it’s own form of truly knowing each other. With who else can we love and rage and eat and be sick? With who else can we cry and laugh, hate and adore, all within an hour? Enjoy the close quarters and the unique immediate closeness of your family. Blood, chosen or otherwise. "Intimacy, whatever its source, implies the absence of effort. Every meeting with a stranger, even a close friend, tends to be circumvented by unwritten rules – particularly that the conversation be kept aloft, that the wine be kept flowing, that a level of performance is maintained. In the intimacy of the family home, behind secret walls, these strictures dissolve.

Closeness emerges, ironically, from conflict as much as anything else. The freedom to argue, even yell at one another, without fearing that the consequences will be catastrophic. Children’s threats of eternal estrangements – the “I hate you”s, the tantrums and angry silences – all are possible only because of (as well as being symptoms of) intimacy….. Michael Chabon wrote about intimacy in his excellent collection of essays Manhood for Amateurs. In the piece William and I he highlighted the ludicrously low standards of fatherhood that male parents can find themselves complimented on so casually, compared with the (traditionally) much harder labours of mothers. His view was that such work is a privilege.

He concluded his essay thus: “The daily work you put into rearing your children is a kind of intimacy, tedious and invisible as mothering itself … lucky me that I should be permitted the luxury of choosing to find the intimacy inherent in the work that is thrust upon so many women. Lucky me.” - Tim Lott (read the whole piece on AT ONCE) #stayhuman #feministparenting #atonceonline #intimacyisfamily

sarahsophief This Is A Wonderful Outcome To The Consistent Attempt To Take Down @plannedparenthood!! Much Work Left To Do But TRUTH Prevailed Today. Read whole story via @nytimes below:

HOUSTON — A grand jury here that was investigating allegations of misconduct against Planned Parenthood has instead indicted two anti-abortion activists who made videos of the organization.

In a statement, the Harris County district attorney, Devon Anderson, said Monday that the director of the Center for Medical Progress, David Daleiden, had been indicted on a felony charge of tampering with a governmental record and a misdemeanor count related to purchasing human organs.

Another center employee, Sandra Merritt, was indicted on a charge of tampering with a governmental record.

The Center for Medical Progress had covertly shot videos of Planned Parenthood officials discussing the provision of body parts from aborted fetuses for research. Mr. Daleiden, 26, had posed as a biotechnology representative to infiltrate Planned Parenthood affiliates and surreptitiously record his attempts to procure tissue for research.

Ms. Anderson said in the statement that grand jurors had cleared Planned Parenthood of any wrongdoing. She did not specify in the statement what record or records were allegedly tampered with. “We were called upon to investigate allegations of criminal conduct by Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast,” Ms. Anderson said. “As I stated at the outset of this investigation, we must go where the evidence leads us. All the evidence uncovered in the course of this investigation was presented to the grand jury. I respect their decision on this difficult case.” #reproductivejustice #profamilyprochoice #stayhuman #istandwithpp

sarahsophief Up On AT ONCE (link in bio): The Wise & Insightful @alexawilding Brilliantly Answers Our "Shit Together" Questionnaire.
A Snippet:

Do you feel like you have your shit together? Why, why not, sometimes?

Before I had my boys I used to feel like I had my shit together. In fact, I was quite sure I did! But becoming a mother to two babies at once, and then seeing our son, Lou (successfully!) through cancer treatment last year, well…I realized that the feeling of having my shit together was a total illusion. Being human, complicated, and occasionally a hot mess is so much more important than keeping up appearances. While I wish it hadn’t taken my son having a beast of a brain tumor for me to learn this, I will always be grateful to the experience for showing me that shit happens, and sometimes your worst nightmare can open the door to freedom. That said, I miss the illusion some times.

  •   ditchrose This is gorgeous & SO vital, @sarahsophief . Women especially seem to feel a constant need to project perfection for fear that showing the cracks will make us less desirable, less competitive or worthy of love & belonging. . . I lost my home in a fire last year & despite the tragedy it's been the best teacher of my life, nudging me to give over to embracing my own messy humanity daily. And the greatest blessing in the world to witness friends & family's open hearted acceptance. The term "hot mess" is back asswards. Perfectionism & lack of transparency are the real hot mess. The rest is just a beautiful opening to humanity in all its colors! 2w

sarahsophief My Daughter Made Me A "Privacy" Sign To Put On My Door For When I'm Working. The Best, Most Thoughtful, Empathetic Gift A Kid Could Give Her Mom Who Works From Home. I'm Feeling Fully Seen. Which Leads Me To My Favorite Quote On The Topic: “There were times when it felt as though my children were annihilating me,” she writes. “Finally I came to the thought, All right, then, annihilate me; that other self was a fiction anyhow. And then I could breathe. I could investigate the pauses. I found that life intruding on writing was, in fact, life. And that, tempting as it may be for a writer who is also a parent, one must not think of life as an intrusion. At the end of the day, writing has very little to do with writing, and much to do with life. And life, by definition, is not an intrusion.” Sarah Ruhl #feministparenting #stayhuman #intotheworkweek 2w
