sarahsophief America is one of three countries that doesn't provide paid family leave Countries with stronger welfare systems produce happier children—and happier parents. In the US the push back on repro rights is connected to a pushback in the accessibility of birth control, is connected to a push back against affordable health care for all, is connected to pushback against welfare, childcare, paid family leave, the right to raise our kids without a threat of violence. it’s all connected. And these are all Reproductive Justice Issues. When abortion rights are curtailed, it’s a slippery slope to all of the above being curtailed. How a country treats women’s health is a huge indicator in the general health of a country and of it’s children. #feministarmy #paidfamilyleavenow! 4d

sarahsophief Friday Thoughts: When Michelle Obama said that she was “mom-in-chief”, she was attacked as “leaning out” or choosing motherhood over feminism/empowerment. This is a false choice that we should have been over ions ago. The truth is, I still struggle with the idea that my feminism is in direct conflict with being a mother. I worry that if I give up too much of my day to parenting, even on days where I have the time, I will somehow lose some of myself. This is an ugly thing to admit, but it’s the truth. As women, we have fought so hard and so long for equality, there is still a small, scared part of many of us that fears that our power may be robbed somehow if we give into the role of mother whole heartedly. I panic that someday, in the not too distant future, I will wake up and my kids will be grown and I will have given up a professional life. Or that I suddenly will be left with nothing to do. The other part of me recognizes that my kids will be small for such a short time, the “longest shortest time” as some call it. I don’t want to miss any of it. I want them to remember me as present, physically & emotionally. It’s an everyday internal struggle that no one seems to talk about. And herewithin lies the root of the famous Mother Guilt. No matter what we do, how much time we spend working everyday, how much time we spend mothering, non of it is ever enough. The balance of these two pulls doesn’t have to be oppositional, but because neither (work or family) ever seems satisfied with what we have to give, they are never balanced. 2w
  •   jessaspen Yes!!!! This is such a struggle for so many women I know. It's time to make feminism about embracing our feminine powers and attributes, following our hearts and celebrating that! Rather than emulating male power, that doesn't make the world a more balanced place. When we have women in the board room who are using empathy and intuition and taking care of their families as well as leading, then change will happen! 2w

  •   kellytunstall Whole mamas make whole kids. We've got to spend time with those parts that make us whole not just for that, but to keep us sane and powerful. Lucid. What is more feminist? Thanks for your thoughts. I've been spending time with that these last few days. 2w
