sarahsophief #SayHerName Happening Now In Union Square NYC! #BlackWomensLivesMatter Read The Signs & Below: dream hampton: "There is a fear of Black bodies. Black bodies are criminalized when they are young, old, alive and even in death. What we watched with Travyon was criminalization unfolding in court. When we see doubt brought upon the Renisha Mcbride story by police or whomever, criminalization is taking place. As a community, we value Black males more than we value Black females.
We know Trayvon Martin and other brothers who’ve been killed. Many of us don’t know Rakia Boyd or Aiyana Jones. We don’t keep our sisters’ names held up in the same manner in which we keep our brothers’ names up. The devaluing of the Black sisters killed is about patriarchy." -dream hampton

sarahsophief Happy Birthday To My one True Love @jessepooljesse. Our friend Leon said at our wedding: "So it is good that you have found each other, because you will need each other. Idealists have more work to do than realists, and they are more vulnerable to illusion and to disappointment. You must lend each other strength, because dreaming is not for the weak. Gentleness needs allies, and a large measure of will. I enjoin you always to protect each other’s dreams, so that your dreams, and your fascination with purity, and your pride in the imagination of a world more true and more good and more beautiful, may finally prevail, in your work, and in your children, and even on the earth." Each year this dream become more true. 3d

sarahsophief This NY Times Piece From Yesterday Helps With The Overwhelming Mom Guilt. Let's keep talking about it! " Evidence is mounting that having a working mother has some economic, educational and social benefits for children of both sexes. That is not to say that children do not also benefit when their parents spend more time with them — they do. But we make trade-offs in how we spend our time, and research shows that children of working parents also accrue benefits."

sarahsophief Thanks @nylonmag! The 2016 presidential election is almost upon us, and to inspire the kind of political engagement that leads to impactful change, The Citizens Bands is having a one-night-only special performance on May 14 featuring some truly awesome special guests: Lea DeLaria, Angelica Allen, Holly Miranda, Sally Kohn and Meredith Graves. The show is at Irving Plaza in NYC, and it's not to be missed. Touching on relevant themes like reproductive rights, police brutality, gender and race inequalities, and immigration, the socially conscious cabaret uses surrealist theater as a means to express feminist ideologies. Not only does it work, but it also attracts some big names: Karen Elson, Zoë Kravitz, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Zooey Deschanel and more have all joined The Citizens Band's lineup in the past. 1w

sarahsophief A Mother's Day Peace Proclamation from 1870: Arise, then, women of this day! Arise all women who have hearts,
whether our baptism be that of water or of fears!

Say firmly: "We will not have great questions decided by
irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to us, reeking
with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be
taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach
them of charity, mercy and patience.

We women of one country will be too tender of those of another
country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs. From
the bosom of the devastated earth a voice goes up with our own.
It says "Disarm, Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance
of justice." Blood does not wipe our dishonor nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plow and the anvil at the summons
of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home for a
great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women,
to bewail and commemorate the dead.

Let them then solemnly take counsel with each other as to the
means whereby the great human family can live in peace, each
bearing after their own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
but of God.

In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a
general congress of women without limit of nationality may be
appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at
the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the
alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement
of international questions, the great and general interests of
peace.
