sarahsophief Another Reason To #Vote: The Next President & House Will Seat 3 or 4 Supreme Court Justices. In The Most Regressive Push Against Reproductive Justice We've Seen In A Generation, Who Do We Want Those Justices To Be?
From The Amicus Brief In #wholewomanshealth :
History holds a lesson for the Supreme Court, the brief warns:
Be skeptical of laws protecting women that are written by men.

sarahsophief Played My #WomanCard Tonight In LA With @emilys_list Creative Council. Dammit If We're Not Gonna Flip The Senate With Pro-Choice, Democratic Women In November!
Via The Daily Kos:

Let's make herstory in the Senate to increase our ranks in that august, predominantly male body, and to aid in the battle to tip the scales back toward sanity.
Though much of our attention has been focused on presidential primary battles, we really need to understand what is at stake here—especially the future of the Supreme Court—and show these sisters our support.
Currently, out of 100 Senators, 20 are women, and 14 of those 20 are Democrats.
At a time in history when many of the gains women have made are under attack from right-wing extremist Republicans, more than ever we need to step up to the plate and support Democratic women running for office.

sarahsophief On "Humanizing Parenting": I love this image captured by @rhiblossom at Sunday's @schoolofdoodle feminist meet up. I'm now on a plane on a quick work trip. Whenever away from my family I tend to think deeply about the complexity of parenting more than when I am in its throes. I found this to be incredibly meaningful.
Andrew Soloman on Parental Ambivalence:
"Good parenting involves both clinging to your child and pushing your child out into the world. A mother who does nothing but cling would be smothering and a terrible mother. Yet we have sentimentalized the clinging and we have stigmatized the pushing. In fact, all motherhood involves both, all parenthood involves both, and the tendency to deny that is very damaging. The ambivalent feelings that all parents have toward their children are the engine of that process. If you never wanted to let go of your child, even for a minute, it would much more difficult to do. If your child sometimes annoys you and sometimes provides you with life's greatest rapture, then you strike a balance between clinging and pushing." #feministparenting #stayhuman #atonceonline

sarahsophief North Carolina lawmakers filed legislation Monday to repeal the state’s extreme anti-LGBT law, which, since its passage last month, has drawn a presidential rebuke and spurred businesses to pull out of the state.

The bill, HB 946, would strike down the new law that, among other things, bars transgender people from using bathrooms that match their gender identity, and prevents local municipalities from passing their own LGBT anti-discrimination ordinances. “HB 2 was a reckless attempt to malign and marginalize transgender people, and it is bringing immense harm to our state’s people, economy, and reputation,” Sarah Preston, acting executive director of the ACLU of North Carolina, said in a statement. “The General Assembly must work as expeditiously as possible to repeal this terrible law as it worked to pass it.” Via @huffingtonpost #repealhb2 #hb2

  •   sarahsophief @kr_romm Give me legitimate stats on your proposed scenario ever happening. Rape & assault are criminally punishable. These laws are hateful & discriminatory, full stop. 3d
  •   kr_romm Being the survivor of three distinct and separate instances of rape the point is to avoid the need to have to legally punish for those crimes through prevention where able. Why create a safe haven for such deviant minds to strike and more victims be traumatized, then prosecute, then further traumatize the victims through the process of it all? When instead society could've been wise stewards from the start and protected our women and our children and our people in general from those who would harm and terrorize them for their own selfish, violent, sexual gratification? It makes zero sense. We cannot bury our heads in the sand, we must pay attention to the voices of the victims, to the voices of the children... Many have survived over the years thankfully, but many have not. Not all victims are victims of rape or assault, there have been abductions out of restrooms too. Point is, an out of place person in a restroom sets off red flags normally and before the protocol was to alert management. Now management will just shrug a patron off. I may be a traditionalist, but considering what I've lived through, and the fact I know I don't want my daughter to ever experience what I have had to survive, I don't need stats to subscribe to the wisdom of Benjamin Franklin: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Granted I don't know you, how old you are, or if you have children. So I don't know how similar we may or may not be. However I can say I wish nothing but peace to you as sisters here on earth. 🙂 3d
  •   sarahsophief @kr_romm I'm so sorry for your experiences. I have 3 kids. I agree we need to protect our kids. There are plenty way to do this that don't involve targeting trans people. We can teach our boys consent, we can raise our boys to embrace feminism & respect women, we can examine toxic masculinity & the culture of violence that we feed our kids, to name just a few. Targeting trans people who statistically have zero history of any of the abuses you mention above boggles my mind. Most likely you and will agree to disagree. Many of the most beloved people in my children's lives are gender nonconforming people. Peace to you as well. 3d
  •   kr_romm And to what you mention above I will add, all of the abusers in my life were hetero. I do hear what you're saying there, so yes with all of that I agree. Hopefully a way is soon found that adequately protects all. 3d

sarahsophief The GOP Stands Alone as the Only Climate Change-Denying Party.
They Also Have Waged A Full Blown War On Women. Happy Earth Day!
Jonathan Chait: “Of all the major conservative parties in the democratic world, the Republican Party stands alone in its denial of the legitimacy of climate science. Indeed, the Republican Party stands alone in its conviction that no national or international response to climate change is needed. To the extent that the party is divided on the issue, the gap separates candidates who openly dismiss climate science as a hoax, and those who, shying away from the political risks of blatant ignorance, instead couch their stance in the alleged impossibility of international action.” #stayhuman #votingmatters #earthday #climatejustice

sarahsophief IMPORTANT: April 26th (this Tuesday) we have the biggest primaries of the cycle to date – and the chance to put some incredible women in office. In order to SMASH the patriarchy, it’s important to get more women elected to all levels of government. That’s precisely why we shouldn’t let the presidential race completely overshadow some critical races.

Here are some women we can GET LOUD about. They are a cabal of badasses running in Maryland & Pennsylvania.
Senate Runs:
Donna Edwards is running to replace Senator Barbara Mikulski in Maryland. She’d become the ONLY black woman in the Senate (and only the 2ndever elected), and she’s exactly the kind of voice you want in a safe Dem seat.
Katie McGinty is running to take down uber-Republican Senator Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania. She was Al Gore’s environmental lead when she was just in her 20s, she adopted 2 girls from Mother Teresa’s orphanage, and we love her.
And it doesn’t stop at the Senate:
Joseline Peña Melnyk is running for Congress in MD04. Congress has never elected a Dominican – and Joseline has has one of the best progressive bios we’ve seen.
Shaughnessy Naughton is running for Congress in PA08 and is a literal scientist. Wouldn’t that be nice to have a literal scientist in Congress when we’re talking about climate change?
Kathleen Matthews is running for Congress in MD08. She’s a journalist who focused her show on equal rights for women. *Image of Carrie Meek, the first African American woman elected to the Florida Senate. (1980)
Give These Races A Shout Out! It doesn't matter if we can't vote in these primaries, these women need their names out there.
