sarahjanestudios Im reposting this pic of my three swan pieces from SOMMER from @tinkerellen because I love seeing them all in one place. Trivia: it took me three tries to get the perfect green. I'm so in love with it. #sarahjanefabric #sarahjanesommer #swans 1d

sarahjanestudios Beating the winter blues, the whole-family-has-influenza blues, the I'm-so-behind-on-everything Blues and the my-kitchen-is-a-mess blues with my favorite linen work clothes and the comfort of knowing millions of women have forged this same path for all of time. With grace and strength. Its nice to connect with each other through our mothering. But have you ever taken a moment to connect with all the mothers before you? Sometimes that's where I get the greatest strength. Oh. And gluten-free brownies. #keepingitreal #sarahjanewallpaper 2d

sarahjanestudios "He thought of those long sunlit hours in the garden. How happy they were. And a great sadness came over him......And a tear, a real tear.....fell to the ground." The Velveteen Rabbit. Margery Williams, 1922.
My first memory of crying...really feeling deeply...while my Mother read to me at bedtime. I was 5 and my life felt completely different after reading this story.
If you want an amazing experience, download Meryl Streep's narration with the George Winston soundtrack. Completely Transporting.
They just don't make stories like this anymore.

  •   maidenhairfern Our children grew up listening to that, now our grandchildren are. 3d
  •   larraz I listened to that every night going to sleep as a child. Recently, I found the disc online and bought it (never even realized it was Meryl Streep) and sat on the couch listening to it weeping. It is and always will be very sentimental for me. Love it. Can't wait to share it with my own children. 3d
  •   diggerdee Same experience for me.. 3d
  •   rareandbeautifultreasures I also grew up listening to the George Winston/Meryl Streep adaptation (on cassette tape!) There is something so haunting (in the best way) about the words of the story paired with that music. 3d
  •   musicalstitch I still have the album and a turntable. Magical. 3d

sarahjanestudios Random thoughts today: My fantasy goal in life is to have so few things that I could pick up my house like a suitcase and travel whenever I needed. But somehow (I have no idea how) I have way too much stuff in my life. Which was especially noticed after #konmari changed all of the world. But not really, because I have a mother who never had more than one thing on her nightstand. I didn't get that gift. With kids, a home business, creative work, hobbies and a husband who is just as creative, we have way more than we need! And I can't stand it. Simplifying has been a quest of mine since I owned my own house. Yet every time I try to throw everything out and pretend we are Amish, somehow "stuff" magically appears again. But it's not just physical stuff. It's stuff in my head. Stuff in my heart. Things to do and things to feel. Im realizing more than ever before, that the song is right: it IS a gift to be simple. A real GIFT!!! And while I didn't get that gift (I'm also not a hoarder or even a lover of things, not even close!) I still dream of being a real honest and true minimalist (ahem...I'm writing this after a trip to Barnes and noble ... With gift cards of course) Maybe this year is my year! Creativity thrives with limitations. It's a truth I've always loved. And my creativity thrives when I'm not weighted down by distractions: emotional, physical, or mental. And that requires simplifying. Reducing. It's something much of the world probably already knows how to do, except me. I'm not going all Walden on anyone. Although that's a fantasy too. I'm just really taking a good hard look at what is worth keeping, worth worrying about, worth committing too, earning money for and spending precious energy on. Because the stuff we own just creates unwanted energy and makes for too much stuff in our head... Which limits our energy towards more important things... Like creativity and service and centering ourselves. And that's my random thoughtsfor today. Which can really be simplified into three words tonight: Less is more. Feels so good just saying. Off to take my 5 Trash bags out to the curb! Goodnight! #sarahjanemessages 4d
  •   2blissfullydomestic Quotation I've been thinking about: "What items do I need to keep to realize my life's full potential and purpose? (I have way too much stuff!) 4d
  •   homegrownliving Oh this resonates! My family and I just moved into a converted school bus not too long ago and getting there was a struggle and even keeping that small space simple has still been a struggle! What the heck?! BUT I will say that life has slowed waaaaay down and in an odd way has become more simple. I'm not sure if it was the bus or the pursuit, but something is working even if I have more work to do. @sarahjanestudios 4d
  •   sarahjanestudios @homegrownliving that's amazing!! Wow! You inspire me. 4d
  •   lanne.thomas Not sure about inspiring.. Some may say mad lol there are def some of your fabric products in my suitcase. Beautiful illustrations and fabrics for the girls :) thank you for the beauty you contribute to the world 4d
  •   homegrownliving @sarahjanestudios it's still a struggle to be sure! You re quite inspiring with your beautiful designs! I can't wait to adorn my humble bus with some of your cheerful prints. I'm thinking some curtains from your line would be so cheery! Our bus is going to be featured on HGTV too so I gotta get her looking sharp! 4d
  •   blehardesign Yes! I completely resonate with this post, Sarah! Well said! I have been having all of the same feelings! My word for 2016 is "SIMPLIFY" and I am trying to clear out the clutter in our home and make space for more family time, down time, and creative time (and less clean up and dealing with "stuff" time). I am reading a wonderful book right now that speaks to all of these ideas and relates to parenting too...it is called "Simplicity Parenting" by Kim John Payne. Have you read it? I think you would enjoy it. ;-) 3d
  •   victorynichols Me, too, Sarah Jane. Me, too. 3d
  •   homemadehappy Love your thoughts here. Simplicity has been on my mind too. You have inspired me to dig a little deeper in my pursuit of less. Thank you2d

sarahjanestudios One more from @ahappystitch . When I dreamed of creating double gauze Swaddle fabric by the yard, my intention was to create a fabric for babies, children AND adults. Soft enough for baby yet perfect for women's clothing! Seeing this blouse @ahappystitch just made makes me so happy to know that it's happening! This double gauze by the yard truly is like any Aiden & Anais blanket. But when you have enough of it to sew clothing, it lays SO well and feels amazing! A game changer!! I'm so thrilled to see your amazing creations! See more at @sarahjanefabric ... A separate account where I can share your posted projects! #sarahjaneswaddle #sarahjanefabric #sommerfabric 5d

sarahjanestudios I'm pretty much dying over this blouse from @ahappystitch ️ You guys, this is just what I imagined and envisioned: a double gauze that was perfect for clothing, but soft and moveable enough for Swaddle blankets! I wanted to bring to life a fabric that would get used without abandon. It's so dreamy for me to see this come to life! It was an experiment for sure... And I love how many people have jumped in and taken this fabric by storm. It's a game changer! #sarahjanesommer #sarahjaneswaddle #doublegauze @michaelmillerfabrics 5d

sarahjanestudios How fun it was tonight at the SOMMER fabric launch at @harmonyprovo !! I honestly thought everyone would stay home because of the snow storm! But so many of you came and it was so delightful. And how amazing is Laura Harmon, the owner... She got the fabric yesterday and whipped up this blouse last night! Thank you Harmony! I just love this family run store! And I ️ the family whose behind it. And I left several samples at the store so you can see and feel , in case you want to come next week. Thanks again for all who came out! #sommerfabric #sarahjanesommer 1w

sarahjanestudios When I meet up with other creatives and small business owners, there is often.... Under the initial layer of passion and love for what they do.... a layer of feeling overwhelmed. Motherhood, deadlines, projects, life and keeping up with everything. Even when things are going "well" it can still just feel like so much. I fall into this category and have been vigilant over the past year to make changes and to not fall into that place. We've suffered with major sleep deprivation this year from our cute little Anders and while it's been an incredible challenge to keep up with work and family, I'm realizing now I'm better for it. Every day is a choice. To love where you are. Why you do what you do. And to consistently carve away at what doesn't matter until all you have left is what you choose to keep. It's not about BALANCE. It's about priorities. And when it's about priorities, it just doesn't feel as overwhelming. Because, this. This moment. These moments. Most days, there is a moment where I start to tip. But I've chosen to say... I Chose This. I own these choices I've made. I chose this day. I chose this life. I chose to smile at breakfast with the spilled milk and uneaten cereal. I chose to be a mother. I chose to be an artist so I didnt have to work outside the home. I chose to show up on the good days and the bad. And that's the key for me. Not balance. Priorities. ️ Goodnight:) #sarahjanemessages 1w
  •   artbylynnemillar I really appreciate how honest and also self-examining you are... You are a great example of how to do the mom-artist thing.
