sarabrains Last night was a dream. I ended up celebrating in Los Angeles with my sister Rebeka and brother Steve, whose birthday is the day after mine! (And of course, my lovely sister-in-law @becaroo, who took the photo.) Thank you to everyone for making this a memorable birthday! 4d

sarabrains Last night proved to be sobering and overwhelming as I stood with fellow Mormons in support of our friend John Dehlin. We still await the verdict from the church disciplinary council. #IStandWithJohn (quite literally) 3w
  •   eric_bybee @sarabrains: I too have a sincere question. Are you at all uncomfortable with the fact that Dehlin has essentially monetized LDS faith crises? I don't know all of the details of his excommunication, but $90,000/year is enough to make me question anyone's motives. 3w
  •   shaynaalisa I wish I could have been there. 3w
  •   vadventurekerr 3w
  •   wildcosmos @eric_bybee He could make a lot more money doing other work. 3w
  •   wildcosmos @ceemariemargaret JD didn't choose excommunication, his leaders chose it for him. 3w
  •   ceemariemargaret @wildcosmos no one can "choose" excommunication. You can, however, choose to distance and/or disassociate yourself from your faith or local faith community, which he did and requested that the local leaders no longer contact/question/investigate him. I 100% agree that any sort of "investigation" of someone's faith is out of line. Questioning that person's motives for statements they've publicly made decrying fundamental beliefs of a religion, while also purporting to still be a supportive member could be considered a natural consequence. The church leadership asked him if he would like to have his records removed or if he would like to proceed with a disciplinary council and he chose the latter. That's why I have a question about his motivation for doing so. As a public figure, he knew the attention this would bring and it casts a bad light upon a process that in most circumstances can be a reasonable and positive experience. It makes Mormons look bad. 3w
  •   sarabrains Can we please be respectful at a time when so many are hurting, including myself? @ceemariemargaret I don't have all the answers, but I do know that John's interview on "Radio West" and the recent "Mormon Matters" podcast on excommunication and community are very informative and helpful. (Emphasis on the community aspect.) Please do not have this conversation on my post when clearly it is an emotional time for me. Do you think these comments will change minds? Please listen to those two podcasts then I wouldn't mind the conversation to continue. (Note: He did not ask to have his name removed. He asked that the stake not conduct their investigation in front of his family again, as that is a painful process. Too bad the news outlets mixed up their facts and didn't correct their error upon John's clarification back in June. This is addressed in the "Radio West" episode.) Thank you. 3w
  •   ceemariemargaret My intent was not to attack or wound, and I apologize if I came off as more unfeeling than I am about this. It was to ask questions in light of the media backlash that will/already has begun in regards to a process and perspective they do not understand. The media loves mixed messages. I have listened to both of those broadcasts and have listened to JD's podcast off an on for years and found comfort in it. I got my info directly from his blog and the letters he published. This is not about shaming. It's about something being lost in translation and that's the tragedy. We all have very deep and sometimes conflicting views based on our own backgrounds, so of course I would not be able to convince anyone with a tiny IG comment, and that was not my intent. I don't think asking questions is ever a bad thing. I hope we all come out stronger after this. 2w
