sandiegozoo African #penguins are believed to be one of the 1st penguin species to be discovered by humans. They’re also one of the most endangered as their numbers have declined by 60% in the last 15 years. Our dapper residents are just the beginning of a large flock we hope to have over the next few years. #penguinawarenessday #birds #sandiegozoo #EndExtinction #photo by Marcia Siggins Jonas 4w

  •   ddblume Very beautiful! @jessica_607 4w
  •   booksbandsandtea if you cared about animals you would release them! I don't care that they have large enclosures! would you like to spend your life locked up in a cage watching people gawk at you? no you wouldn't so release the animals. I understand if they were rescued and can't go back to the wild but what's the point of having perfectly healthy animals? animals are not for people's enjoyment 4w

  •   jessiecolborne @booksbandsandtea I see your point, but it's impossible to release these animals back into the wild. It would be a death sentence basically. Once an animal is raised with humans, being fed and not defending themselves.. They can never learn. They've tried seeing if animals can adapt to the environment and wild from captivity and they cannot unless they are rehabilitated for safety reasons (oil spills, etc.) because usually they are only in captivity for less than a week. These animals have been with humans for years and many of them are born in captivity, so they cannot return to the wild. 4w
