86 percent of #NYC social services clients have experienced #street #harrasment. According to #Metro "#catwalks, unwanted following and touching are an often-daily reality for #women." After experiencing this since she 11 years old, @feministajones became aware and activist. She created #youOKsis that allows women check in with each other after this kind of experience. #Women are the face of global poverty. Still, in #UnitedStates women sistematically earn much less than men and represent less than 15 percent of top-level positions at political and corporate spheres. Capitalism, neoliberal economic policies, lack of affordable housing have increased homelessness 64 percent higher than ten years ago. Last year, 60,353 people were homeless in #NYC including 14,519 fanilies with 25,640 #homeless #children. #Discrimination and #racism are other part of the #story. This scenario affects disproportionately #AfricanAmerican #NewYorkers making up 57 percent of the city's shelter residents while #Latino 31 percent. This in contrast to 8 percent #white and 1 #AsianAmerican. Moreover, large amount of homeless are people living with mental illness or severe #health problems.

Think it twice when #people say that's result of their choices in live. Definetely, be born black, latino, #poor or disable can lead you to dream in America, but on its #streets.

samynemir "You all should start listening more to each other. Each of you has the other's puzzle"- @ruddyroye told us during a passionate #speech about his life's #philosophy that derives in his #powerful imagery. "Everyone has a #story", he said urging us to ask people's names, finding their tales.
The #Jamaican #photgrapher has been 29 years documenting untold and often overlooked stories of disadvantage #people, minorities and communities, especially #Blacks in the #US. His work highlights amid the huge social #media community due to his efforts to spend time with his sources, a custom declining #today among some photographers. Few people knew about his work until he joined @instagram. "The day I found an #universal #language to tell my stories, then #people started to follow me." He believes #photography has the power to deliver messages in a less aggresive or intrusive way. It moves by sublty, quietly impressions. His work certainly does. Today, he has over 100K #followers.

samynemir I believe in #Christ, I believe in golden braids... |For the #LGBT community the Pride Parade is one of the most expected days of the year. There not only a great friends and people common to you came together but also people very different from you. Many freely express themselves and their identities through creative, emancipatory, diverse ways and forms. There is space for #gay, #lesbian, #bisexual, #transgender, #transexual but also #young, #old people from different races and ethnicities. That's what the #gay flag represents, the (sexual) diversity of a group, of #human, human beings.

samynemir @mmviverito minutes before her first State of The City address as the @nyccouncil Speaker. She is the first Latina and Puerto Rican to be elected to the city's second most important position. This became the first of these speeches to be delivered at a public housing complex, in Harlem, an area known as "El Barrio". During '40s and '60s, Puerto Ricans migrated in thousands to the city and settled down mainly in neighbors such as East #Harlem, #Bronx and #Brooklyn where they faced discrimination because of cultural, racial and linguistic differences as well high unemployment and harsh living conditions. Women worked in great numbers in underpaid jobs such as sweatshops and faced many rights violations. Large families were living in decrepit and unsafe tenements, in some instance more around three families in one apartment. At some point, the #City of #NY created a program and moved families to other states amid a tense situation and pressure. Some bussinesses even had #signs that read "No #PuertoRicans allowed". #Today, there are around 1.2 million Puerto Ricans making up around 8 percent of the city's population and the third group after #Whites and #Blacks. Melissa's speech marks a symbolic and historical #moment of the Puerto Rican diaspora representative not only of the #progress but also the acceptance of "minorities", PR and #Latinos. Moreover, it's another milestone stepforward of the #feminist movement of #women participation. In the group of flags behind her, besides the U.S. and boroughs ones, she added the Puerto Rican #flag. Her speech repeatedely mentioned words and whole sentences in #Spanish. His stylist is a succesful beauty artist @karlobeau and his deputy #press director is @pedrojulio, both Puerto Ricans. Her progressive #speech, aligned with #socialjustice and #humanrights, called for reforms to the #criminal #justice system, including a bail fund and changing some criminal offenses. It also proposed creating offices of labor and human rights, monumental improvements to public housing and expanding technological and #scientific resources and programs to the #education system. Her speech started and ended with a standing ovation. "Pa' lante!" 3w
