samira_uae Ramadan Captures : Volunteering

There are so many great volunteering initatives taking place throughout Ramadan for people to take part in. One such activity is "Food Drive UAE" which is a social initiative set up to help underprivileged families during the holy month. The team collects food items such as rice, flour, sugar, pasta and oil from the community, then hands out enough to each recipient to feed a family. These initatives are great ways to help others. samira_uae Ramadan Captures: Sadaqa

Unlike Zakat which is compulsory and a pillar of Islam, Sadaqa is a voluntary charity that can be given to whoever one wishes.

It is not something that is specific to the month of Ramadan and is highly recommended to do throughout the year. It serves as expiation for one’s sins and yields rewards in the next life. It is stated in the Quran: “For those who give in Charity, men and women, and loan to Allah a Beautiful Loan, it shall be increased manifold (to their credit), and they shall have (besides) a liberal reward.” —.Qur'an, Sura 57 (Al-Hadid), ayah 18[10]

samira_uae Ramadan Captures: Fun with family and friends

The month of Ramadan is a great time for fun gatherings with family and friends. These can be over shared meals, discussions, tea/coffee in a Majlis, or even playing games. A popular game for example is Carrom (or Karrom), which is a "strike and pocket" table game of Asian origin, similar to table shuffleboard. #Ramadan_Captures

samira_uae Ramadan Captures: "Feed the Fasting" initiative

There are a number of great initiatives that take place throughout the month of Ramadan to help provide Iftar meals for those who might need it. These are spread out over a number of areas but normally located near mosques or in labor areas. People can help to contribute with funding, sharing food or volunteering. One such initative is that organized by the Red Crescent. #Ramadan_Captures

samira_uae Ramdan Captures: The 'Umrah'

The 'Umrah' is a pligrimage made by Muslims to Makkah (or Mecca) in Saudi Arabia. It is different to the major pilgrimage called 'Hajj' because of the fact that it can be undertaken at any time of the year and the journey itself involves some but not all the rituals of the Hajj. Many people prefer to perform Umrah during the month of Ramadan and so you will often find a lot of people make a pilgrimage during this time. samira_uae Ramadan Captures: The Dua'a

Dua’a in Arabic means call, request, supplication or prayer. Dua'a can be divided into two broad categories depending on what is being asked, including religion and the world. Examples of making du'a for religion would include things such as if a Muslim asked God to increase their faith or to forgive them for their sins. Examples pertaining to the world would include things such as if a Muslim asks God to be cured from a disease, or to be granted more children. Dua'a are said at any time of the year but often more so during the last 10 days of Ramadan. A common Dua'a that is made for example is the following; Allahumma Innaka 'Afuwwun Tuhibbul' Afwa Fa'fu Annee'. The approximate translation being: (O Allah! Verily, You are the Oft-Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me). #Ramadan_Captures

samira_uae Ramadan Captures: Breaking the daily fast with dates

In the tradition of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH), a lot of people tend to break their daily fast with either fresh or dried dates, followed by water. It is said that the body benefits from the date's high level of natural sugars and that by eating a date first it helps the body start the digestive process, giving it the energy to deal with secondary, more complex foods. Dates are also high in vitamin A, B6, folic acid, potassium, natural sodium, iron, magnesium and fiber. #Ramadan_Captures

Ramadan is the month in which the revelation of the holy Quran began. It is highly recommended to try and read/recite the whole Quran at least once during the month, and reflect on the meanings and themes of the verses.#Ramadan_Captures

samira_uae Ramadan Captures: Homes Distributing Food

During the month of Ramadan you will often find that many houses distribute home-cooked food to workers, or anyone who might need it, on a daily basis. The food distributed is usually either a Ramadan staple called Harees (a porridge-like dish of boiled or ground wheat with meat or chicken), or a rice-based dish like Biryani or Machbous (rice and meat/chicken/fish). One of our neighbor’s for example normally has 50 or so men queuing up on a daily basis, as they are given pots of food for Iftar. #Ramadan_Captures

samira_uae Ramadan Captures: Taraweeh Prayers

During Ramadan special evening prayers are conducted known as "Taraweeh". These prayers are voluntary but strongly recommended. A lot of people attend these prayers in the mosque to pray in congregation, however one may also perform the prayers individually at home. #Ramadan_Captures

During Ramadan people fast from dawn until sunset or Al Maghrib. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and one of the highest forms of faith and worship. Moreover, fasting teaches one to share the sufferings of the less fortunate. The fast-breaking meal is known as Iftar. This photo was taken in Al Dhabiya, UAE. #Ramadan_Captures
