rouse196 @barrowedtime and crew prepare their 305 #IMCA RaceSaver sprint for the main event on Friday at Bloomington. Unfortunately rains would cancel the event before they could take the track.

rouse196 Remember, behind every successful driver is a mechanic who is just as talented with a wrench as they are in a racecar.

From cleaning the car with a rag to rebuilding motors-they're there, slaving away in the shadows and behind the scenes. I remember the first time my dad took me in the pits at Eldora when I was probably 12 or so. He lied about my age and had me sign the paper stating I was at least 16 (I think) and we took off down the tunnel. Thanks Dad! It was most likely the Dirt Late Model Dream in 2008. Nonetheless, I walked the rows of cars in absolute amazement. Crews running around getting things ready, drivers pacing nervously, girlfriends and moms and other family members all there, excited but nervous as well.
There's a third dimension when you're up close to the cars, can smell the race fuel, can feel the unsettling nervousness of everyone waiting to go out and race. It's something not many race fans get to see, especially the young ones. That's why I post these types of pictures. Not everyone is a driver. Maybe I can inspire someone to be a mechanic or crew member, or even to grab a camera and be a photographer like myself in the dirt community. I just want to help the sport in any way I possibly can, because without it over the last 12 years, who knows what I would be doing right now.

rouse196 Engines roaring. Tires squealing. Fans screaming. An announcer barking over a cracking PA system. The National Anthem.
These are all common things you hear as chaos ensues on Raceday. It's powerful. Something like that sticks with you forever. It doesn't matter if your first racing experiences is at age 5 or 50, you're always going to remember that first time.
But there's something absolutely majestic about walking a racetrack when it's empty and hearing its silence. Seeing the detail of the carnage it's suffered over the years. Knowing legends have given it everything they have in the same exact spot you're sitting in in silence, letting it sink in and wondering what it was like.
We don't just eat, sleep and breathe racing because it's cool or fun or simply something to do on Saturday night. We do it because we love it. Because one day when we were a kid someone took us to the racetrack and we saw racecars.
At first it was all raw. We didn't know names. We didn't know affiliations or what series it was or anything like that. We just saw the rawness and the power of the cars, and drivers' passion to lead a race and win. And we sought after that high.
That's why I love it. Because it's not an environment you can control. When the green flag drops you can't call a timeout if you're not ready or in position. You can't stop a guy from passing you like you could by fouling someone you're defending in basketball as he drives to shoot a layup. It's mixture of talent, luck and controlling your emotions for the duration of the race and every single time you go out whether it be a heat race, a dash or a main. And that's why I absolutely love racing. Because it's 110% real, and not a lot of things are in the world these days.
Why do you love racing?
