•   richnz @wekawitch great! This is near the last of the carrots. Nearly planted new seed today but still too cold I rekon. It is one of the crops that you could definitely last a year of you got the planting right. 2d
  •   richnz @glenrossboss wonderful flavour and although old not woody... They were egmont gold... Worth a repeat 2d
  •   richnz @jinipapi best really aren't they! 8 months in the ground and still going strong . 2d
  •   madameluc They must be so sweet;)) 2d
  •   sadiequitta Bless 2d

richnz #cauliflower for dinner tonight. First of the batch from the #kiwigarden grown in the #grasshouse #organic #vegetable #gardening #pesticideherbicidefungicidefree #nz 1w
  •   yogaiskra 1w
  •   tilly2054 1w
  •   januny That looks soooo nice. I bet it will be tasty too :-) 1w
  •   glenrossboss The home grown are quite different to the supermarket beast aren't they🏼 1w
  •   richnz @glenrossboss yep for sure..it doesn't look as compact and tight does it, but far more nutrient dense I imagine.... Decided to hold off a few days to get the most from it! 1w
  •   g.delrio.g Thanks for your comment 1w
  •   jinipapi Your. Looking good. So satisfying too. 1w
  •   richnz @jinipapi thanks! 4d

richnz This #chilli plant is pretty beat up, hitting zero in the #grasshouse but it just keeps on keeping in. Don't need to dry them cause they are just hanging there fresh! #organic #gardening in the #kiwigarden #Taranaki #newzealand #backyardnation #growfoodnotlawns 3w
  •   soph_er Mine are hanging in there too! Can't believe they've survived the winter 3w
  •   chefcynthialouise1 Dripping with red glory x 3w
  •   carlymould Fantastic!! We've just eaten our last capsicum from summer- a couple of my plants held on through the winter. We even had a couple of frosts up here in northland! I'll be saving those seeds and breeding my own cold tolerant variety!! No doubt you will be doing the same! 3w
  •   perpetual_harvest Plants have the rare ability to be both beautiful in life and death. Something to which I can aspire. 2w
  •   richnz @carlymould yes even tried to jump the gun and get some going but still too cold! I bet there are hints of spring up north though! 4d
  •   carlymould Yes spring is here and in full force ! My potatoes are well up and I've tomato plants coming along nicely too! I love the warmth up here but it does come with a cost! We get the full brunt of insects and disease due to the warmth but I'm working on increasing the nutrient density of my plants to combat this! 4d
  •   richnz @carlymould nice to hear potatoes up! Ours are chitting. Tomatoes up.... Just jealous! Good luck with the insects... You're right we don't get many bad guys( touch wood) 4d

  •   richnz @lifecanbeadreamswthrt no this is about a km down the road away from the mountain... But it is open and a nice view!! 3w
  •   jennapowell @richnz very challenging... I was 17 at opunaki was where I learned to surf! 3w
  •   januny Great picture 3w
  •   lifecanbeadreamswthrt I stay a similar distance from some mountains. Couldn't imagine living where everything was flat. Yours looks like a stunning area too! 3w
  •   kengardener Wow. That's awesome, and I use that word sparingly 3w
  •   richnz @kengardener hey many thanks mt taranaki hides a lot of the time so when he comes out its worth a look!! 3w
  •   richnz @lifecanbeadreamswthrt sounds very nice! I agree nice to see a change in the landscape 3w

richnz This #winter I put quite an area of the #kiwigarden into #bluelupin cover crops. It has mostly been clipped down and dug in now....But why not keep some and collect my own blue lupin seed? #organic #gardening #NZ #backyardnation 4w
  •   jinipapi Why not ?? And so pretty. 4w
  •   lifecanbeadreamswthrt Those grow wild in our fields. Do they add nutrients to the garden? Not as beautiful as the tall European lupins but still pretty. Do I need to go collect some for my garden? 3w
  •   richnz Yes they are nitrogen fixing and of course they add loads of carbon to the soil when cut up and dug in! Plus of course they grow through the winter covering the soil! 3w
  •   gorgeousgranny44 They are such a beautiful shade of blue @richnz 3w
  •   januny Lupins are beautiful 3w
  •   kengardener Very nice colour. 3w

  •   crc74 Love the birds !! And the worms of course 4w
  •   januny Love the bird song, and worms are such great little workers for the kiwi garden :-) 4w
  •   richnz Yes isn't the birdsong nice! Guess you are thinking of spring even though it's still a wee way away! I'm going to grow onions this year and the seedlings are up in two trays 4w
  •   richnz @januny comment above! 4w
  •   richnz @crc74 love the birds too 4w
  •   g.delrio.g Thanks for your comment 4w
  •   chelebanks Wow!! That's awesome !! (I love worms!! I used to love helping my grandma in her large garden when I was little, & finding worms was always a sign that the garden was healthy!!)xxo 3w

  •   plantariangirl Is this to keep critters away? 4w
  •   richnz Hi. Well it probably helps but the intention was warmth. Still deep winter here! 4w
  •   chelebanks Great idea!!xxo 3w
  •   steve0scorpio How cold does it get there? It can get around -30 C (single digits F) where I live. I may need a 2-layer system for deep winter 1w
  •   richnz @steve0scorpio we get maybe a dozen frosts a year but usually doesn't stay below zero during the day minus 5 or 8 would be a big frost for us 7d
  •   steve0scorpio So that's reason 472 of 24953 as to why I want to live in #NZ 7d
  •   munchkingrace How clever! 4d

richnz Can't blame the #birds for enjoying the #kiwifruit in the middle of winter on a frosty morning! But not too many. #kiwigarden #organic #gardening #pesticideherbicidefungicidefree 1mon
  •   richnz Kiwi don't mind the cold... They need a very strong trellis as they are a vine. Heavy pruning annually after harvest and before spring. Mine is a bit of a jungle but when pruned properly you walk underneath it and pick the fruit at head height and lower as the vines hang down. Need male and female too I believe😀😀 4w
  •   amazingameliahill I bet you they LOVE your kiwi garden! 4w
  •   richnz @closetbeekeeper hi tips on kiwi just above!! 4w
  •   richnz Hi amazing @amazingameliahill how are you? Yep the birds definitely have their share ... Guess I can spare a few! 4w
  •   closetbeekeeper Thx! I knew about the need for a male and female but not sure how to know the difference if they're not flowering. I was worried about the cold though. Can they take a freeze? 4w
  •   richnz Mine is an old vine and has had many many frosts down to maybe minus 7 or so.... Not quite sure whether young plants are as sturdy but I think they could mange it... Maybe a bit of frost cloth for the first few years. 4w
  •   richnz @closetbeekeeper oops did it again, comment above! 4w
  •   perpetual_harvest I love kiwi so much, I'll eat it fuzzy skin and all. Waste not want not. 2w
