riateah A picture i was very fortunate to receive. After a long day of sightseeing our last stop was at a mayan village located 40mins away from the city and local markets. The eldest person of the village was a 86 year old woman who is one of few who still speaks the mayan language. She sat beside a slate of a broken piece of iron placed on top of a wood fire. She had a humble smile on her aged face as she pressed down on her homemade corn dough shaping them into perfect tortilla shapes. As we navigated our way through their homemade garden following a dirt path we stood in a half circle to be brushed off with a chant, burning herbs similar to sage and leaves i was not familiar with. After, the children in the photo preformed two dances the first was called 'the dance of the deer', and the second ' the dance of the monkey'.Both demps and i were pulled out to dance with them.
Conveniently, both our cameras died right before we came here so our new friend snapped a picture of us and emailed it. The children do not look very happy and ever since i received this ive been pondering this thought.

But i wouldn't be very happy either if my survival for goods we couldnt grow replied on tourist staring and snapping pictures of us as we preformed our traditional sacred dances. Their young innocent little faces makes me sad knowing i will probably never see them again, knowing all they seen in me was a 'rich' tourist and me not being able to share my story. That i too am indigenous to my country.
