repstenyhoyer Seven years ago, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed into law by President Obama. The enactment of that law was a significant milestone in the march toward full equality by allowing women recourse if they had been paid less than their male counterparts. However, women still earn, on average, only 79 cents to every dollar a man earns. Congress has a responsibility to address this problem with the serious effort it deserves, and House Democrats remain committed to continuing the work of eliminating the pay gap by passing the Paycheck Fairness Act, which I am proud to co-sponsor, in order to prevent pay disparity from the outset. http://1.usa.gov/1PJUWMK 2w

repstenyhoyer I enjoyed learning about the newest models of American-made cars at the @washautoshow. As the automobile industry in America thrives, companies like @ford and @chevrolet are employing more Americans in manufacturing plants nationwide. I remain committed to working to ensure that more businesses like these and their workers can make it in America. 2w

repstenyhoyer Today I was proud to join Rep. David Cicilline and several other House Democrats at a press conference in support of the Assault Weapons Ban of 2015 to prevent gun violence and help keep Americans safe. The bill was introduced today by Rep. Cicilline and has over 100 cosponsors. It is long past due for Congress to address the mass shootings in our country and take action to prevent this tragic, too frequent loss of life. #AssaultWeaponsBan 2mon

repstenyhoyer I was pleased to be on hand when the Every Student Succeeds Act was signed into law today; it represents a significant victory for students and their families. I am proud that this legislation includes the full-service community schools model that I have supported for years. This model helps close the achievement gap by ensuring that our students have access to the resources they need so they can succeed in school, and I’m hopeful that this new law will help expand this model across the country. 2mon

repstenyhoyer Today I joined House Democratic leaders at a press conference urging Congress to protect every American’s right to vote by passing the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2015. We should be advancing our democracy, not excluding people from exercising their most fundamental right – the right to vote. #RestorationTuesday #RestoreTheVote 3mon

repstenyhoyer Today, I joined Members of the Congressional Black Caucus at Howard University, where we held a discussion with students on the damaging impact that sequester level funding has on minority communities, including cuts to Pell grants. Our country’s future is being threatened by the Republican policy of sequestration – severe and arbitrary budget cuts that affect everything the federal government does. There is a real opportunity this fall for Congress to come together and prevent the sequester from returning. I continue to urge my colleagues to reach an agreement to fund the government beyond December and replace the sequester caps with a responsible and fiscally sustainable alternative that ensures a stronger future for our country. #CBCatHowardU #StopTheCuts 4mon

repstenyhoyer Today I was pleased to join NDD United and my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate for a "Rally for a Stronger American Future.” Today, we urged Republicans to work with us on a bipartisan agreement on appropriations that raises sequester caps on both defense and non-defense priorities. Doing so will allow us to invest in our economy and national security for a #StrongerAmericanFuture. 4mon

repstenyhoyer Beginning in July 2015, House Democrats have held a series of hearings titled “Make It In America: What’s Next?” to explore how the economy has, and hasn’t, changed, and what families and businesses need in 2015 to Make It In America. Following these hearings, House Democrats returned to their districts for the August District Work Period, where they heard from their constituents about what Congress can do to help more hardworking Americans Make It In America.

repstenyhoyer I was proud to join in welcoming Pope Francis to Congress this morning for his historic address. His exhortation to the Representatives of the American people that we who serve ‘are called to defend and preserve the dignity of [our] fellow citizens in the tireless and demanding pursuit of the common good’ was a powerful reminder of Congress’s responsibility to be an instrument of equality and opportunity. I hope Democrats and Republicans will work together to address the challenges facing our nation and the world in a spirit of comity and cooperation befitting Pope Francis’s good counsel. #PopeInDC

repstenyhoyer All of us remember where we were when terrorists attacked our nation fourteen years ago, murdering 2,977 people and shocking the conscience of our country and of the world. None of us will ever forget the tears, the sorrow, and the loss of that day. But neither will we ever forget the extraordinary acts of heroism. Today, as we mourn the victims of the September 11 attacks and pay tribute to the heroes of that day, we should honor them by renewing the sense of unity we felt that morning and in the weeks and months that followed. As we mark the fourteenth anniversary, let us remember that our greatest rebuttal to those who attacked us – as well as the most fitting tribute to all those we lost – is to keep defending the principles that bind us together as Americans and that will always be an enduring source of our strength. #NeverForget #Remember911 5mon

repstenyhoyer I visited J. F. Taylor today to learn more about the important work they are doing in St. Mary’s County providing a range of quality products and services to their customers, including the U.S. Department of Defense. I also discussed my “Make It In America” jobs plan I'm leading in Congress and the steps I'm taking to update the plan to reflect today’s economy. 6mon

repstenyhoyer #FlashbackFriday—Eight decades ago, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Social Security into law, providing peace of mind to seniors that they would not spend their final years in poverty. A hallmark of the New Deal, it continues to ensure that seniors can live a life of dignity and independence after years of hard work. This vital program has been incredibly successful as a measure of protection both for seniors and for families across America. As we mark its eightieth anniversary, Democrats will continue to protect Social Security and ensure that it stays strong for generations to come. http://1.usa.gov/1JXHa4G 6mon
