When will I behold the wonders
All the blessings of this life
I am always gazing at the distance
Everything's here and now. - BP

Big Brother
______________________________________
With almost five years difference between us, it was difficult to be very close growing up, but my brother Gary was so damn cool. Everybody knew it. He was (and probably still is) fearless. Anyone daring enough to challenge him rarely came out on the winning end. He watched out for me, and tried to teach me the ways of "coolness". By the time I caught on, he was off to join the Army and begin his life. Our life's taking us in different directions and destinations. It's strange, we're not that close but the bond still exists. You know how when you get together with your siblings you all fall into your roles. I always feel a sense of safety around him. Guess that's why he'll always be my big brother.

Sarah in Terabithia.
______________________________________
As parents we can't imagine anyone deserving of our children' s hearts. I've seen them fumble their way through bad connections, and seen them get their hearts trampled on as well (not a big fan of that last one). But when they find that diamond in the rough it's so rewarding. Someone new to shake up the mix. Sarah is all that and a bag of donuts (seriously, bring donuts next time Sarah). She comes off as quiet but you can see her eyes and mind taking it all in so that when she speaks she knows precisely how to target you so that you're sent to the floor laughing. The cool part is that they met in film school down in Orlando, so they are both artists and filmmakers. Not many people find someone who shares their passion. Unfortunately, due to the miles between us, we don't get to see her often enough. But I'm fairly certain she'll be around for quite some time. (I wasn't kidding about the donuts)

The Girl at the Stockyard.
.
This was their second date and he insisted on taking her to his family's favorite, and rather expensive, Restaurant. She was a little uncomfortable with the idea as she was a girl from simple means and feared she'd feel out of her element. He, on the other hand, seemed rather unaffected by social status. He was as much at home at a hot dog cart as he was at a Michelin Star draped establishment. He was different, a fact she was anxiously aware of. Even though her best outfit she wore was a mish-mash of outlet and thrift store procurements, his attention made her feel as if she were the most elegant in all the place. As she spooned in the last drop of her Lobster Bisque she realized that her eyes had been closed the whole time in complete culinary bliss. As she opened them she saw him staring at her with the gentlest of smiles, completely taking her in.
...and in that smile she saw her future.

Embrace.
.

A simple word really. One that right up until now she had always associated with intimacy. But now at this turning point had begun to take new form. A full acceptance rather than a surrender to her place in this life. Opening her eyes and realizing that she deeply loves and in return is deeply loved. Discovering, with each new day, a world full of beauty and fragility that offers renewed hope.

Christy.

"Wisdom is like a tree of life to those who embrace her"
______________________________________
I got to know Christy about six years ago when I took a group of high school kids to a music festival in the middle of a cornfield somewhere in Illinois. She helped me wrangle the kids and kept me from strangling a few of them. I noticed her tattoo when we spent an afternoon at the lake cooling off from the July heat, and I found it really fascinating. Now I've not always been a fan of tattoos, as a kid you'd only see them on the arms of Hell's Angels, Longshoremen or Charles Manson's forehead. However, Christy's was one of the first that open my mind to Tattoo's as a serious art form.
.
I've been formulating this shot in my head for the past several months and really wanted to bring a level of respect while showing her body art along with capturing her warmth and strength. I have a real problem with what some people try to pass off as art as an excuse to be crass, though I try not to judge. I'm a huge fan of artists such as @Alix_Carmichele (she has an amazing underwater series that is awe inspiring), @Killingmoon82 @Vandekreeke and @Foto_Wagner who really raise the bar to the art of capturing the human form. I thought of each of you at some point during this process.
.
Special props to my wife Diana who does killer make-up and loves to challenge my directorial control.
