realnickgerber So many lives crossing paths at this intersection. So many stories we'll never know. I took this probably a week ago and every time I look at it I just think about who these people are and where they were off to. People watching is probably my favorite thing to do. 1w

realnickgerber Today is World Sight Day. TOMS challenged me to think about what sight means to me. In order to really appreciate what being able to see means, I took away my vision for the first half of the day. Wearing glasses with frosted lenses allowed me to put myself into the position of someone who has cataracts and see what they might see (or not see). I have to say it was a wholly terrifying experience. I felt my way out of my apartment building and slowly picked my way to work. The whole way I was scared I was going to walk into someone or cross into traffic as a car or bike was coming. It literally felt like my life might be in jeopardy. Once I made it to my office I sat down in front of my computer and couldn't see well enough to do anything on it. I felt paralyzed - not able to do work and too scared to go home. It was frustrating. It was hard. I have a newfound respect for my sight. It's something so fragile, but so important. Did you know that there are 285 million people worldwide who are visually impaired and that we can help almost 80% of those people with simple surgery or glasses. There are 12 million children worldwide who's vision could be fixed right now with a simple pair of glasses. There are a lot of problems that we don't have any control of, but this one we can fix. We can change this. After today, I know what having sight means to me. It means everything. What does it mean to you? @toms #givesight also, thanks to the people who helped me pull this off: @shutterblade @kurtgerber and Tim Jarosz (too cool for Instagram - JK, Tim) 2w
  •   jennymontgomery I work down the street from a center for the blind. I see the newly blind navigating the streets of New York daily. It is inspiring and terrifying. I am amazed at their courage. I've also become very appreciative of my sight. 2w
  •   realnickgerber @jennymontgomery thanks for sharing, Jenny! It's a truly terrifying proposition and I feel like I never thought about how fucking lucky I am to have sight until I tried not having it. It's hard and that courage is real. It gives me great hope about the human spirit that they are there, moving along and putting the pieces back together 2w

realnickgerber It's World Sight Day!!! TOMS challenged me to think about what sight means to me. I figured the only way to really know the value of something is to take it away. I've got a pair of frosted lenses that simulate what a person with cataracts might see and I'm going to spend the first half of the day with impaired sight. Later today I'll let you all know what it means to me, but in the meantime - what does having sight mean to you? @toms #givesight 2w

realnickgerber We're fast approaching World Sight Day on October 9th and @toms challenged me to think about and share what sight means to me. So like any good student I had my friend do the assignment for me. This is my friend Kenny (@kinglaudotco) and here's what he wrote: "I remember the first time my world became blurry. It was the fourth grade and I was asked to read aloud what the teacher had written on the board. I couldn't read it because I couldn't see I remember being scared. I remember being ashamed.
Luckily, I live in a world where technology has the capability of correcting my genetic misfortune. As time and technology have progressed, I've seen my vision, first corrected by the coke bottle glasses of the 80's, then enhanced by the contacts lenses of the 00’s, to most recently LASIK.
Without sight my world as I know it would cease to exist. My career, my hobbies, my freedom, and my appreciation for visual beauty would all be gone. I am grateful every day that I have the gift of sight." Did you know that over 285 million people are visually impaired worldwide, but 80 percent of these cases are curable or preventable? About 90 percent of the world's visually impaired people live in developing countries. Over 12 million children worldwide have visual impairment that can be improved with glasses. #givesight

  •   gelmcdini Oh this is cool! I, myself, has poor eyesight too. I remember being scared before when everything got blurry. I was afraid not to see the sky, the clouds and everything I love looking. But mostly I was afraid not to be able to read books, awesome books. I'm doing good now. Thanks to my glasses. 2w
  •   realnickgerber @angeeelmaaacs so good to hear! Thanks for sharing!!! 2w

realnickgerber As we approach World Sight Day on October 9th @TOMS challenged me to think about and share what sight means to me. Simply put; sight means everything to me. I'm a photographer which means it's my ability to make a living. It's the pleasure of sharing images with all of you and seeing what you post. It's the joy of holding a prism up to my eye and seeing a kaleidoscope. For me, sight is my everything. Now I want to know; what does sight mean to you? #givesight 3w
  •   alinatsvor That's amazing! Really cool @toms 3w
