piccolotakesall As I scrolled through my photo roll, I stopped at this picture of breakfast I made last weekend – buckwheat waffles w/ berry sauce, & greek yogurt – and suddenly got hungry. Anyone wanna make me some waffles? #wishingforwafflesfordinner 5d
  •   piccolotakesall @lmunjone Thanks, Lea. There is so rarely decent light for picture-taking in my house. Especially in the winter. I had to take advantage of it here. 5d
  •   piccolotakesall @fac_610 Thanks, Bill. Most importantly, it tasted good! 5d
  •   kbasta yum! I think you should make them for all of us... ;) 5d
  •   speeppola I made pancakes a few weekends back and they were a disaster. I'm better at eating breakfast than making it! 5d
  •   piccolotakesall @kbasta Haha. Maybe just for you, K... If you make the cortado! 4d
  •   piccolotakesall @speeppola hahaha. I think I am, too! I have to admit, I was experimenting when I made these, so the last few were the only ones that came out perfectly! however, I pretty much have pancakes down to a science. Hope you're enjoying this slightly warmer day today! Oh, where is spring??? 4d
  •   kbasta Deal!!! 4d

piccolotakesall Hey all... I’ve been in full-on hibernation mode, but today (Sunday) I’ll be venturing out. From 1-4pm, I’ll be at Rebekah Templeton Contemporary Art (173 W. Girard, Northern Liberties) for the closing reception of @smallhaystudio’s painting exhibit. If you’d like to add some bright color to your otherwise white weekend, please, come out and join us! ️+= 7d

I recently met these young ladies as I headed to center city on the el. We chatted for a few stops, and eventually, I was able to cajole the self-proclaimed camera-shyness out of them. I was pleasantly surprised to learn they’re on their high school’s bowling team! I had no idea kids still bowled!

  •   jenae28 sweet symmetry! 3w
  •   piccolotakesall @jenae28 Thanks, Jen. I wasn't able to get it quite on, but eh – close enough! 3w
  •   mobropta It is so true about the amazing symmetry of that building. It was too dark to get a good shot, but there is a cool spiral staircase to the ladies room. Frank Furness was the architect. He has a number of building around philly worth checking out. 2w
  •   mobropta Oh! I see you already knew about it being a Furness. Sorry!! 2w
  •   piccolotakesall @mobropta Haha. Yes! I saw the spiral staircase, but didn't try to get a picture. Perhaps next time I'm there! 2w

  •   piccolotakesall @batrayday I haven't made much of an investment, since I only have an entry level camera. That's pretty much why I want to switch up instead of upgrade to a better Canon. Problem is I don't have any money to invest as it is. 3w
  •   jenae28 I'm always in the mood for popcorn! 3w
  •   piccolotakesall @jenae28 me, too! I eat it several times a week! 3w
  •   vixwei Hope you go to the philly instameet 😇 2w
  •   piccolotakesall @vixwei Hey, Victor. I totally would, if my husband wasn't already having a reception for his art show at the same exact time. If you guys get bored, come up and see us (and some art) at Rebekah Templeton Contemporary, 173 Girard Ave in Northern Liberties, Philly. 2w
  •   vixwei @piccolotakesall def ! Haha we love art at least I do ! 2w
  •   piccolotakesall We'll be there from 1-4pm. But I know y'all will be having a blast at the meet! Hope you get a great turn out! 2w

piccolotakesall Over a year ago, when driving home from a Center City visit with family, I noticed the neon sign and lights were on at Lorenzo’s Hair Styling. Normally at that time on a Sunday, the gate would have been down. I took this as a sign, and asked my dad to pull over. I jumped out, looked in the window, and there was Lorenzo, cutting a woman’s hair. But the door was locked. Apparently, he had opened especially for his regular client. He approached the door, and I timidly asked if he would mind if I took a picture. Without hesitation, he let me in, and they both graciously posed for me.

I shared that my great-uncle Al had emigrated from Italy, and worked as a barber for many years in New York City. He then led me to several framed newspaper articles hanging on the wall. They recounted *his* immigration story:

In 1956, at the age of 19, he and his father, unable to find work, left Italy to join his uncle in Philadelphia. They traveled third-class on the ship, Andrea Dorea. Near the trip’s end, heavy fog rolled in, and the ship was hit by another boat leaving the US for Scandinavia. When it was clear they were going down, Lorenzo grabbed his life jacket, and jumped into the ocean. He was eventually rescued by the Coast Guard and brought to shore on the other ship, which had luckily suffered less damage. After hours of worry, he was reunited with his father, and they eventually made their way to Philadelphia.

After working odd jobs for several years, in 1961, Lorenzo purchased this barber shop on Frankford Avenue. He ran it at the same location for over fifty years.

I had hoped to make a return visit, but waited too long. This week, I was sad to learn that Lorenzo Della Valle passed away over the weekend. He was 78 years old. I feel honored to have experienced even a bit of his hospitality. (I realize this was incredibly long, but I felt I needed to tell the story. If you’ve read the whole thing, I really appreciate it! Please accept this trophy filled with ice cream as a big thank you! )

  •   piccolotakesall Thanks, guys! I had a feeling this would be a hit with the designers! I thought it had a readymade album cover feel to it. Perhaps we should start a band and call it Furniture??? @1_of_8 @nghbrs @matthewcustar 4w
  •   amundj I see you now V! Needed the ipad to get that out! 4w
  •   piccolotakesall @amundj you sure you didn't mean you needed to get your glasses??? 4w
  •   amundj It would probably have helped! Cause I DO have these bifocals for screen/ book use, due to my old age grown longsightedness!😑😬 4w
  •   piccolotakesall @amundj but I have a feeling you're one of those that look good in glasses! You know, raises the level of sophistication. 3w
  •   amundj Well, if life get's more sophisticated now I am unsure I can deal properly! Happy weekend V, and thanks for your trust!3w
  •   piccolotakesall @amundj Ha! You don't fool me – you're most definitely a sophisticate! 3w

  •   piccolotakesall @amundj Amund, I have 6 of these orange stacking chairs, so as it stands (or should I say sits? ), there's enough for our fine gathering of folks. And as for the beans, you'll likely consider this a "cheat", but it's a “Roma” Nespresso pod! @jenae28 @kbasta Let’s get this party started! 1mon
  •   piccolotakesall @speeppola I thought someone would appreciate a caffeinated post after a long weekend! 1mon
  •   piccolotakesall @1_of_8 Super yummy! Pull up a chair and join the IG round table! 1mon
  •   amundj Yeah! A cheat. Completely unexpected from your side. Fell off my Eames! Oh I forgot, I had none! 1mon
  •   piccolotakesall @amundj Hahah. Well, when I visit you guys at your cabin, you can make me a *real* cuppa along with a stack of your fabulous berry pancakes! And if need be, I'll bring my own chair to sit on! 1mon
