piafaustino Evolution of a #coffee nerd:
So I bought the husband a #mokapot six months ago. It has since been joined by two more shiny metal coffee-making objects.

I must admit, these do make breakfast a lot more fun!

piafaustino Every #HolyWeek in #SanFernando #Pampanga, young men walk barefoot in the streets while flagellating their backs. They cut their backs first with glass shards, then whip themselves with bamboo-tipped ropes to induce bleeding. This is a form of penitence, also believed to assure protection and wellbeing for the flagellants' families.
This tradition will be featured in #SacredtheMovie, a film on religious rituals and experiences around the world, airing on PBS in 2016.

piafaustino I find the media frenzy around the #Maleldo2015 in #SanFernando #Pampanga as interesting as the traditions themselves. The crucifixions and flagellations have become a tourist and media event, complete with t-shirts, telecom sponsors, and necessary accreditation for journalists covering it.

Lot of interesting questions about the whole thing: Is it a commercial spectacle or a sacred ritual? A barbaric custom or legitimate cultural practice? An authentic act of faith or a mere performance? Indigenous or imported? Or is it all these?

Like many things in the #philippines, it is a jumble of contradictions all at once. #lent #catholicism #religion #semanasanta #holyweek #SacredtheMovie

piafaustino Some friends and I had the whole #PurpleYamMalate to ourselves yesterday afternoon for an amazing lunch, which included the best tapa, tocino, and champorado I have ever had. After the meal, we enjoyed a long chat with restaurant owner, author and diva of #FilipinoFlavor, @amycbesa (right, pictured with Fil-Am photographer Jason Reblando) over champoy ice cream. And she signed my copy or her book: Memories of Philippine Kitchens. What a treat, and in such a beautiful setting: her family's ancestral home in #Malate. #FilipinoFood #Filipinocuisine #Manila #philippines 2mon

Normal Pia Faustino
piafaustino So this young female mining engineer that we interviewed in Baguio (right) is very comfortable dealing with men who are older or bigger than she is.

Not only does she supervise them at work, but she occasionally kicks their butts in competitive chess, too. In fact, she finished her engineering degree on a chess varsity scholarship.

In college, whenever would find herself broke, she'd head down to the chess tables at the public park and win just enough money for the jeepney ride home.

She learned early in life that smarts and guts are what will win you the long game.
