philberticus Kerala is actively trying to become a dry state...liquor stores are few and far between; an impediment when you're about to embark on a 24 hour backwater tour. Here's me in line at the government liquor store waiting for a fresh order of warm Kingfisher. 3w

philberticus Roadside grooming. It's important to stay fresh and look good for long-distance India hauls and this guy wanted to fix his hair up before taking this photo of him in his truck cab (which he shares with two other drivers). 4w

philberticus Continuing down the path of exploring Mumbai's intense juxtapositions, today we went to visit Dobi Ghat, an area of town that's existed for over 100 years where hundreds of people live and clean over 100,000 pieces of clothing of local residents every day including from hotels, hospitals and fashion brands. This guy was overseeing smoky catacombs where laundry was being boiled by fire. An incredible experience and reminder for how wide the spectrum of life swings in Mumbai. And if you've ever bought a piece of clothing that says 'Made in India,' there's a good chance it went through a pre-wash process at one of these places. 1mon

philberticus Refinery took me to Germany this week and I got to catch up with my grandparents. You're looking at three generations led by my grandfather, Melchior, who is a couple months shy from 104 years (born 1910, four years before the start of WWI) and his wife, Essi, who is coming in at a proud 94. They live by themselves. He reads Le Monde every morning, has a Turkish coffee, red wine for dinner and an occasional cigarette. She plays Bridge every night. They have 18 grandchildren. Oh and they've been married for 72 years. (Dad on the right). 5mon
