petedevries Summer is here and everybody is frothing to get some waves. I've seen numerous collisions over this past weekend in the water. Here are a few tips for the people new to the sport to have more fun and not get hurt. Be aware of your surroundings. If you are in a giant crowd of people get out of the water and move down the beach to a less packed area. The best waves aren't necessarily where everyone is sitting and less people means less surfboards flying through the air at your head. Give the experienced surfers some space. It should be fairly easy to tell if you are sitting in the spot where the level of everyone around you is way higher than your own. You will get way more waves and have way more fun down the beach. It's always good to keep your eyes open and not get focused on only the waves you paddle for too. This will make the water safer for everyone. Please respect the locals who have put years into surfing these waves. Have fun! 2w
  •   aquajunkie Here here! 2w
  •   buckets_of_fire @achilts @candicestorm that's all good, the key point is Pete's post suggests the beginners r the ones who should take action and move down the beach. That's not just seeking awareness. In my tourist town the crowd is now majority low experience surfers. It is normalized to paddle in front of surfers riding waves rather than seeking the whitewater saftey. If u try to educate even very politely u are likely to be rejected and considered an asshole. Pete's suggested action would be rejected as a selfish bully comment and responded to with "Pete should go down the beach". You are better off including a ethics justification rather than just safety in the long run... If you allow too much tourist and residential infrastructure to be zoned and built..,, you'll see 2w
  •   pintsizeproduction Thank you @petedevries well put 2w
  •   marcuspaladino @buckets_of_fire Who are you? 2w
  •   candicestorm @buckets_of_fire.... piss off! there....now i am the asshole!!! i can assure you Pete is about as opposite as being an asshole as you can get!! hopefully your ignorance and stupidity stays in your town! 2w
  •   buckets_of_fire @candicestorm I know he is not. It sounds like naïveté is entering your town and bad enough worth posting about, and your are just in the beginning phase. In fact look at my first comments about ethical constructions that can justify relegating beginners to down the beach (that means Pete is not an ass). When I was a kid beginners went down the beach and if we got in the way as we progressed up our session was over. Now getting in the way is normalized because that's what beginners mostly see and it's a positive feedback... U can't even say something to someone who paddles up the face in front of you or you are the ass. Forget explaining foam balling. 1w
