petalplum So much happens in one day, sometimes I forget to breath in the beauty and essence of my children. Sometimes we get to the end of the day and they say mama you haven't given me enough hugs today.

We made this sweet little flower crown using some of my crochet wool and clover flowers picked from a friends garden. I think there'll be more flower crowns in tomorrow's play - we love them so.
{I was telling the kids where the colours on this blanket are from ~ that yellow is from the zinnia flowers that we used to make her a massive crown last year, the same ones that adorned her birthday cake. I had never thought about capturing memories through colour before - but it makes such wonderful sense, and what stories to tell when you gather colour from your days and weave/crochet/knit/sew it into your life}.

  •   petalplum @deemwhalan hehe - this ones been languishing in the to-finish basket for a year or more now....some memories don't fade, and the colours are surprisingly strong too. Maybe small projects would be good.... xx 12h

  •   jnbrintonrobkin As I came upon your photo, for a split second, I saw my daughter's face as a young girl... She is now 33yrs old and the time does fly. 11h
  •   jnbrintonrobkin Loved your story! Beautiful photo! Thanks! 11h
  •   russianchik I see a Faerie Queen 10h

petalplum I'm hoping for a yarny weekend ~ some natural dyeing, some weaving, some crochet, some winding of pretty colours, some chatting to friends....
This fuchsia is the best colour ever - I love the simple shibori marks that will create lovely pattern as I add it to my ripple blanket. This was a happy happy natural dye experiment > and now I have to wait for next summer / autumn to make this colour again. Seasonal dyeing, like seasonal eating, is pretty special - and makes me appreciate the colours all the more, and watch the landscape for the plants, flowers, berries to add to my dye pot.

{if you want to learn how I capture colour from nature I have a workshop coming up next month. All the details are on my website - there's a link in my profile }

petalplum Guess I've always loved playing picking flowers.... Especially for my mama.
My dad found this note that I wrote to my sister @sylash - I wonder how old I was.
Happy Friday and hope you have a flower-picking weekend

petalplum I've pulled this blanket out to finally finish.
Made entirely from naturally dyed wool - the colours are like the most beautiful flower garden and you can't help but smile when looking at it. A very simple chevron stripe, there's no plan - I simply add a new colour when the last ball runs out....

And this is to announce that Zoe @peregrinationz and I are so excited to open up our Winter Natural Dye workshop. We have the MOST beautiful location ~ Margeaux's @willowynn_textile_art home and love-filled garden (yep the one you saw in Frankie Spaces!).
Spaces are limited to allow for a small gathering experience. Jump over to my website (link in profile) for all the details, and make sure you ask any questions you have about the day.
:: Saturday 27th June. 10.30-3pm. Held at Dunoon (just inland from Byron Bay), Northern NSW.
You'll learn how to make beautiful colours like these (on fabric, yarn and paper), and spend a day connecting with other local creatives. Oh - there'll be cake too!!

petalplum I believe in being true to ourselves, in finding truth in our authenticity, in experiencing joy in the most simple of pleasures ~ such as picking dandelions while out walking. In showing off our own version of beauty, and not wishing for someone else's version.
I believe in love and cuddles and saying sorry and thank you. And asking for help, and offering advice. And knowing sometimes we can't always get it right, but trying harder next time is the best journey.
And soaking up the warmth of the sun, and tickling baby, and conversations at the dinner table with my family. And talking to the moon, and feeling the ground under my feet.

Thanks @ofkin #ofkinbelievesinbirthdays ~ I believe in giving and sharing and supporting..... Happiest Birthday to you xx

petalplum I love the way this little weaving matches the current season. Naturally dyed colours just work together - there's no harshness, or jarring hues. They sit happily beside each other, singing a song of the landscape.

I have found the most perfect location for a natural dye workshop in the Byron Bay hinterland region ~ so, I'm wondering (those of you who are interested), what dates would best suit. I'd love to do one as soon as we can, to gather any late Autumn colours..... Otherwise we'll wait till Spring time.

petalplum So > after this afternoons post on all the contentment and bliss....well, you know what they say about pride before a fall. It ain't all sweet babies and men cutting firewood.
~
tonight I take the baby to bed, again ignoring the clothes to put away (this time annoying me!). Having left the big kids arguing in the kitchen over who will wash up and who will clean the table. And me yelling at them to just do it already, with the baby on my hip...... Standing almost in the same spot as hours earlier the sun had warned my face - now my 10 yr olds face turned at me in irritation, with backchat on his lips.

Sam has been sick-tired lately (he has Ross River Fever), and me tired with baby - we are asking the kids to step up a little and help out more.....sometimes we wonder if the battles are worth it.

But ~ what I really wonder is....for all my talk and thinking on peace, contentment and seeing the beauty in the moment > will I learn to live it better....will I learn to not yell at them, to stop before I start, to stop half-way through even...to apologise to them the way they deserve. To not rely on the fact that being sweet children they'll forget and forgive anyway.
After all the words - it's actions that matter most. But, I console myself by thinking that I can only change by trying and talking to myself about it ....

Also > wouldn't I love, just for a day, to slip into retreat mode.... Have you heard about the Mama Creative Retreat that @zannilouiseauthor is hosting in the Byron Bay hinterland? Often nourishing our mama-selves helps to nourish our families....

{that warm glowing sun caught my eyes, this beautiful @thewanderingeyetextiles rug that baby lay on, crunching these leaves.}.
Small moments amongst the mess - I suppose that is good too.

  •   vanessabovee @petalplum I (and my siblings) all hated washing the dishes. With 7people in the house there were a lot of dishes. One week rotations written in ink on the calendar helped keep some of the fighting down. 3d
  •   sevenlittleaustralianscounting Oh and yes its worth it the big picture, work towards it. I have older children (and youngers) so glad we persisted 3d
  •   buttonandbean_bespoke Oh what a day. I hope tomorrow brings a fresh new day for you and a bit more sunshine. X 3d
  •   amlewis67 Your emotions are valid and it's good for children so see their parents as real beings with real emotions - it's not good to yell but it's human ! Let yourself off the hook @petalplum 3d
  •   artistica_domestica It's life and kids need to understand how their actions affect people and that parents are just people too. I'm with you though... Just climb into bed. Tomorrow is another day! 3d
  •   robinhoodgrl Thanks for sharing , love your honesty and it's so nice to know that I'm not alone in the struggle of "enjoying and living in the moment " 3d
  •   laura.e.b lovelovelove you! i love that you value the art of apology. not many parents ever even think about apologizing to their children. it is so important. you are modeling what many only ask for FROM them (by demanding children apologize for this and that). they know you are human and make mistakes and that you are truly sorry and hold yourself accountable. and that you are always trying to do better. that is what they are learning from you...humility and love. my 20 year old still comes to me after he has been cranky and says he is sorry. and in the sweetest most genuine way. none of us are perfect...but we strive for love and respect and trytrytry. 3d
  •   foodnfamily_ No problem, though I cringe at the word advice. Who knows if it works by design or good luck. I think the bonus with food prep as a "chore" is that no one cares about mess but me, but neither kid wants to starve. 3d

petalplum Today ~ I soaked up those imperfectly perfect moments. I ignored the dishes waiting to be washed, and the kids papers sitting in piles, and the clothes to put away.
Instead I watched my sweet baby play, stretch his body in the first stages towards crawling, tickled him until he giggled and giggled. Ate toasted sandwiches beside my man, soaked up the quiet of being with someone and not needing conversation.
Watched him cut firewood, with baby on my hip, afternoon sunshine in my eyes. Cake in the oven for when the kids got home from school.
The golden glow of life comes not from wanting perfect moments, but from noticing and being with your moments. Simple moments of seemingly ordinary life bring me so much more pure joy and contentment than over-bubbly ached-for perfection.

I remember once my mama said that what she wanted for us wasn't so much happiness but rather contentment. I think I was 15 or 16 at the time ~ I am so glad I remember that, for it makes sense to me in my soul.
To be content means looking at what you have right now and finding your happiness there.

  •   petalplum @5_times_blessed hi - I just sent the PayPal thing...let me know if it doesn't come through to you. X 3d
  •   5_times_blessed Paid Thank you. And no rush at all. I just read your last post. Not sure if this helps, but people say ALL the time that 'wow, 5 kids must be such hard work', my reply is always: 'yes, but the hardest ever is anytime we have a baby no matter how many children altogether. 5 now is easier than any time we had a baby.' And it is. I hope you get lots of rest tonight.xx 3d
  •   podkins1 This caption was everything. 3d
  •   mayaclimbstrees Yes contentment 3d
  •   petalplum @mayaclimbstrees yes yes - it's a good word isn't it! Trying to find contentment amongst all the rest....how are you today? (Is it today or tonight or last night there?? Hehe - it's 8.40 thurs morn here). xx 3d
  •   mayaclimbstrees Yes! It is Wednesday night 6:40 here :) I am ok! Feeling the depths and pulls of relationships a lot and trying to work out how I fit into all the lives. 3d
  •   petalplum Ah relationships...friendships.... @mayaclimbstrees yes -- I am finding lately that a lot of my dear friendships are there but I'm simply (and them too) not having time to connect and be with them.... I'm spending so much time being at home - I suppose with a baby, and working from home makes that a necessity ...but I was feeling so stretched when I was having to be out all the time. It ebbs and flows doesn't it. I think the true friendships develop into relationships that can withstand being pulled. I'm learning to trust the truth in those friendships so much more than where I have to output and invest to make it happen..... I hope you work out how to fit it in - you are a busy busy woman and I can't imagine how you do it all..... 3d
  •   petalplum I am pondering my relationship with creativity - how to balance my personal making, with making for my family & with my family, with the stuff that actually pays the bills...it doesn't all fit together -- I wish I could work out how to make it one thing...ah. xxx @mayaclimbstrees 3d

petalplum Hello Monday!
I am working on a how-to for you to make your own wall-hanging weaving. These Autumnal colours are so so good - all naturally dyed.

I also have weaving kits available for pre-order on the website (link in profile).

  •   loomloomshake Thanks lovely-will do.x 3d
  •   petalplum @loomloomshake is that the right size...that I've written above? 3d
  •   petalplum @linz4 if you want a super big loom I can organise that for you - depends on how big you want to weave, how much time spent on each weaving..... 3d
  •   linz4 I do really love extra big weaves but here's the catch haha iv never weaved in my life im just wanting to take it up as a hobby as im a stay at home mum and need something to keep me sane haha. What you you suggest for a total beginner 3d
  •   petalplum @linz4 both have same technique / skills, etc... What it comes down to is space to sit it, how big you want to make each weaving (though you don't need to warp up the full size; you can make smaller weaves on the larger loom). I have a large loom that's in the corner of my living room and I work on it around my family life (I have 7month baby + 2 big kids). The last weave I did took 2 months, but slowly slowly...bit by bit. So - if you want to make bigger weavings then I'd say go with the big one. You can start your first weave on it smaller, until you're ready to go full size. I'll have to get price for big loom for you tomorrow. xxx 3d
  •   linz4 great thanks so much for all your advice I'll wait for a price on the larger size. Thank you again x 3d
  •   petalplum @linz4 the larger looms will be an extra 25 + you'd probably need more yarn, so you could get another yarn pack for 25. xxx 2d
  •   linz4 thank you I will have to save for a couple of weeks and I'll be in touch x 23h

petalplum For my birthday tomorrow, I asked Sam and the kids to plant me some herbs and flowers. Yesterday we choose the plants from our local organic nursery and this afternoon they planted them.
It made my heart swell watching them dig holes and push the soil around the roots. And then watering them in.
Often in the busy of life, and the tiredness of baby-caring, I'm forgetting to notice and enjoy the simple moments. I'm forgetting to encourage those moments, and to linger on them - as a family to find love and joy in the moments spent together.

This floral mandala is one that my girl Mishi made a long time ago, when we had dahlias flowering ....I plan on having some in our garden again for Springtime. And tending the peacefulness of our family and encouraging the pure joy.
