paulajoye New Years Resolutions. They're slippery little suckers aren’t they?

I love the clean slate that every January brings. Twelve shiny, new months filled with endless possibility.

Boxes to tick, goals to achieve, mountains to climb and then... Will power seems to slip, life gets in the way and before I know it I’m wrapping Christmas presents and wondering why I didn’t learn Italian, take hip hop classes, read those top 20 books on the New York Time Best seller list.

I thought about this a lot over my summer break and how I might break the pattern.

After a large bowl of honesty, I realised that over the last couple decades the language I use around resolutions, plans and goals has become bigger and more loaded.

I've stopped saying DO and substituted it for words like change, evolve, grow.

These are big words with even bigger connotations.

Then Yoda popped into my head, whacked me with his stick and said: Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.

It's true. To effect true change, to learn, to evolve first you must DO.

There is so much propulsion in this one

So in 2016, I am going to DO.

Love being part of the @triumph_au campaign. Head to their profile to create your own fun web mantra like mine and commit to the power of one word.

Let's make 2016 amazing

  •   kevin72_ Oh. My. God. I had to have this chat today with a staff member about 'trying'. He's been 'trying' to improve but without any improvement. Today I told him that he'd 'tried' enough. That it was time to stop trying and start 'doing'. 3d
  •   jess_thei @paulajoye incredibly powerful words 3d
  •   misschew Last new years resolution was to have "no excuses" and it changed my life, I accomplished so much more than I ever thought I could 3d

paulajoye Today was one where you step through a sliding door. A quick unplanned dip at Bondi turned south when I lost my engagement ring. I put it in the pocket of my shorts in case it slipped off in the rough surf and went for a swim. The second I got out and went to put it back on I realised it had slipped through a (designer) rip and disappeared into the sand. It was gone. Utterly gone. The moments in which I worked all this out are a blur but I was physically sick. Shaking sick. I've been married almost 20 years to someone I love more than anyone else and this ring carried all that. Symbolised ALL that. Fast forward three hours later: my husband Saxon recruited the awesome @harriescarroll (from @bondilifeguards) who called Tony from a genius company called Jewellery Rescue (a metal detecting business) who drove all the way from Liverpool on a Sunday to help us out. Surrounded by nippers, most of North Bondi Surf Club and the lovely crew from @bondirescuetv - Tony and his magic equipment found my ring.
Feeling lucky in both life and love as I go to sleep this evening. Thank you to the universe and all the kind people who helped and cared today. And particularly to my incredible Lulu who held my hand all afternoon and never stopped searching or believing it would come back to me.

  •   jbone_sp The main diamond in my engagement ring fell out just days after my daughterr was born . . . at a plant nursery where the ground was pebbles and the carpark had broken glass strewn through it! Everybody was scrambling around searching for the diamond, like a needle in a haystack. Had to replace it. 3w

paulajoye In 1993 my life changed when @lisa_wilkinson gave me a job - Beauty Editor - on CLEO.

It was on this special magazine that I learnt more than can be measured from awesome editors - Lisa, Deborah Thomas and Wendy Squires - and made life long friends amongst my colleagues.
I worked on the title for over a decade, editing it for six of those years. It was a time full of freedom, creativity and envelope-pushing.

A time when we worked really hard - many, many late nights - but it was also the very best of times.

Hearing that the magazine has closed cracked my heart a little. With the final turn of its pages we lose an important piece of Australian history.

She was an old friend to so many of us who inhaled her wit and wisdom each month.

Farewell Cleo, you shall be missed.
