pastelfd "Calamansi and Sampaguita” (Detail)

Based on ancient local traditions, these plants have a native symbolism that switched during the last times.
Since 1565, Philippines has been invaded by different countries and regions, being always in a large social and political transition trying to preserve the native spirit.
Calamansi is a plant used during filipino´s funerals as way of purify the body, while the Sampaguita (national flower) use to represent humility and reverence, actually is the flower that young kids use to sell on the streets just to survive.

Salàmat to ArtBGC Family and all my Manila friends for your lovely support!

Painted in Font de la Polvora, a gipsy neighborhood they use the public space as a extension of their homes. The site identity is an mportant element because is a community living of habits and traditions. Birds competition, cigarettes, chatting, smokes, playing cards. Creating in a Non-place of the periphery, a public space to live in family and meetings.
In front of the wall is a very thin river where grow some wild plants and the animals drink water. Is the neighborhood geography and a community functions as it, outcast for some, united between them.

"Vascular endemism"

Vascular plants are also known as higher plants or tracheophytes. Their defining characteristic is the differentiation of transport tissue throughout their structure. Since the colonization of these volcanic islands, non-native flora has been imported, which, due to the distinctive Macaronesian climate, has become endemic and unique to the region itself. This same hybridization occurs within societies that seek to integrate themselves into a foreign country, over time creating their own particular identity.
