pargett Spotted @ #ted2015
Postcards from Ferguson. So dope for this to be one of the gifts that attendees at the conference can get. I met the photographer, Jon last night and he found it very important that the stories from Ferguson aren't ignored at a space like this.

pargett Today for Womyn's History Month @thedreamdefenders honor Marcia Olivo. Marcia, a Dominican Republic native, is recognized for her work as a community organizer and advocate for domestic violence victims. In 1989, Marcia moved to the United States and began working as a community organizer with both "Mother on the Move" and "North West Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition", both located in the Bronx, New York.

Upon relocating to Miami, Florida in 2000, Marcia continued working with organizations such as Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center as well as coordinated the Florida Immigrant Coalition. Marcia also made a name for herself at Power U for Social Change, where she organized parents around educational issues to develop a platform that would improve educational standards at public elementary schools.

In 2002, Marcia became a full time mom. She resumed her work in 2008 as a Coordinator of a support group geared towards women and children survivors of domestic violence. Marcia, along with her colleague, recognized a great need for a long term sustainable organizing group led by survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. This group would raise awareness around the impact of violence that women and their families experience as well as address society’s response to violence against women. Ultimately, Sisterhood of Survivors was created in 2008. In June 2012, Sisterhood of Survivors merged with the Miami Workers Center and has become the Gender Justice Council of the organization. The purpose of the council is to promote gender equality; provide a framework to analyze and understand social issues affecting women; provide women leaders with a platform to share their experiences; organize and win the incorporation of gender in social, racial and economic justice organizing; and to engage broader constituencies around issues of women’s right and gender justice.

Marcia currently serves as the Gender Justice Coordinator at Miami Workers Center. #WomynUp #HerStories

pargett Doing Yoga with Legoman today at the airport in Dallas is definitely the most interesting thing to happen to me on a layover at an airport.

Turns out he goes to OU, and gave some perspective on the controversy with SAE (the frat singing the racist song) and elevated the importance of the ongoing organizing on campus that made it easy for the University President to respond in such a quick and decisive matter.
Much love @legoman_iac @ou_unheard

pargett Today for Womyn's History Month @thedreamdefenders honor poet, Laila Re. Born Kabul, Afghanistan. She escaped from her native land with her family due to civil war. They lived as refugees in Islamabad, Pakistan until her family immigrated to Canada in 1991. Laila has been raised in Toronto, Canada since the age of 5 and it is where she currently resides. She earned her B.A, B.Ed and M.Ed at York University. She is a peace activist, certified teacher and poetess.

Pieces to Peace is a poetic account of Laila's journey of self-discovery in Toronto as a 26 year-old Afghan-Muslim woman living on her own for the first time. It is her story of pursuing her dreams while coping with personal issues of grief, trauma, poverty, cultural identity and belonging. Laila is a woman in becoming as she rebuilds herself through poetry from pieces to peace. #WomynUp #HerStories
