oracleteamusa With the second Sydney training camp complete, #oracleteamusa is planning its next training session. The focus: Foiling. On our AC-72 that won the 34th #americascup ‘L’ shaped dagger-boards and ‘T’ shaped rudders create lift allowing the hulls to “fly” above the water, exceeding 40 knots (45 mph) while foiling. 2mon

oracleteamusa The #OracleTeamUSA training in Sydney for the 35th #AmericasCup continues. Sailing team manager Tom Slingsby talks about what the team is achieving: “We hadn’t seen each other or sailed together since the last race of the America’s Cup, so it’s great to get back together as a crew. While we’re here we’re going to be trialling new sailors, testing new techniques and importantly it also gets us all in the same place talking about ideas on how we go forward and how we’re going to defend the Cup.” 5mon

oracleteamusa Skipper @JSpithill will return to #OracleTeamUSA as the team re-builds with a focus on winning its third consecutive #AmericasCup.

The youngest skipper to ever lead a team to victory in the competition for the oldest trophy in international sport, Spithill says the lure of working with team principal #LarryEllison and CEO #RussellCoutts again was too strong to ignore. “There were some very good offers out there, but at the end of the day, Russell and Larry, I wouldn’t be here without them…” Spithill said.

Spithill has made the America’s Cup his life’s work, beginning as a 20-year old #skipper of the Young Australia team in the 1999/2000 Louis Vuitton Cup. He’s raced in every event since then, making steady progress towards the victory in 2010, when he became the youngest skipper to win the trophy.

oracleteamusa City of San Francisco proposes venue sites for the 35th America’s Cup

The America’s Cup Event Authority has received a letter from San Francisco’s Mayor Ed Lee, proposing venue sites within the City that would be used to host the next America’s Cup in 2017.

The letter reads, in part: “The 34th America’s Cup generated hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity for San Francisco, created thousands of jobs and showcased our spectacular waterfront, the beauty of San Francisco Bay and the sport of sailing to millions of spectators around the world. “Therefore, it is with great enthusiasm, guided by the lessons learned and practical experience of the 34th America’s Cup, that we propose the venue sites for the 35th America’s Cup in San Francisco in 2017…” The City is suggesting the use of Piers 27-29 for the America’s Cup Park and Team Bases as well as Piers 19.5, 23, 31 and a section of Pier 80 for team use. A portion of Marina Green, including the Peninsula area, would be used for public viewing and bleachers. A significant change for this next America’ s Cup is shifting the team bases to the America’s Cup Park at Piers 27-29.

The teams, who found San Francisco Bay to be an ideal racing venue, welcomed the good news.

oracleteamusa #OracleTeamUSA, winner of the 34th #AmericasCup, and #Boeing [NYSE: BA] are collaborating to recycle 7,000 pounds (about 3,175 kilograms) of carbon fiber of USA-71, a yacht built for the America’s Cup campaign in 2003. The hull and mast of the racing yacht will be processed and repurposed, a first-of-its-kind effort for what will likely be the largest carbon structure ever recycled.
