ohnoradeo That morning a friend and I rented bicycles to explore Rapa Nui. We ventured in and out of the rain to the opposite side of the island, to a beach where we spent the entire day swimming, picnicking and napping in the sun. We lost track of time and tried to race the sun back across the island to catch Ahu Tongariki before dark. It was impossible to pass by wild horses and scenery of rolling hills and not stop to photograph everything in sight that it became clear we weren't going to make it. I whipped out my map, flagged down a truck and proceeded to ask if I could hitch a ride in the back despite the language barrier. We sat in the back of this dirty flat bed truck, still wet from swimming and snapped photos of the ocean while watching the sunset change colors around it. It was my first experience hitch hiking, which now I frequently do while traveling and it has lead to many interesting adventures but this memory is still my favorite. 1mon

ohnoradeo My phone is my diary, photo album, radio, wallet, passport, time capsule......I've been filling it up to its capacity with a lot of writing lately. While cleaning it out I've come across these little moments from my adventures this summer. It's funny how quickly a photograph can bring you back. When I reflect on my writing it brings me back to whatever my emotional state was at the time. When I reflect on my older photos every detail comes back to me from the smell in the air to what I was thinking at the time. My adventure in Cairo was short but one that made a major impact on my day to day life. I remember this day like it was yesterday, the noises and smell of the camel market, my curiosity suppressing this uneasy feeling I had about being there. This is looking back at the entrance, which appears to be normal and calm. Behind me is what felt like an endless road full of hundreds of camels, mainly in poor shape, open sores with one leg restrained so they couldnt run off. Every so often one would run wild trying to escape while men would chase it down attempting to beat it into submission with sticks. I was constantly moving to keep from being trampled. The sight of these animals in such poor health or even dead, rotting on the side of the road just outside the market left me speechless. I love immersing myself in different cultures and learning about them. I have a great respect for all living things and the differences, traditions and customs that come with their uniqueness. I guess that's where the term "culture shock" comes from, admittedly it's not always for the faint of heart. 1mon
  •   gschro88 I just came back from Southeast Asia and it has inspired me to travel more. The experience of new culture is priceless and enriches your life exponentially. I now see travel as a necessary education that if more did/could do it would solve a lot of the bullshit problems we have in our society. Thanks for sharing your journey this past summer it was an inspiration for me! @ohnoradeo 1mon
