oh_look_a_sparkly_thing This guy is getting really aggressive. He was one of the summer hatchlings. (It is not Arthur!) I'm removing him from the coop with the eggers & other "nice"roosters & into the space the meat birds were kept in. He can still socialize with his friends but not be abusive towards them. I've been lucky with good roosters in recent times, but he is not one of them :-( #backyardchickens #chickensofinstagram 3d
  •   traceychambers He's handsome even if he is becoming quite the handful :( 3d

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Love this labeling on @badgerbalm tin at work. The balms are a favorite of the littles in the winter months for their chapped hands & cheeks, especially before quiet rest time. One of mine has a lovely routine of exactly where she wants it placed. Above eyebrows, on her nose & chin. I've got a pretty great job. 4d
  •   bamistadi I can't wait for roman to go. I'll miss him at home but I just know he'll love it so much! 4d

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Going into year 20 of pysanky... I wish I could say I get better with each year of practice, but it's not the case. Steady hands I do not have 😕 1w
  •   sarina.bowen Wow. You're ahead of the game! 1w
  •   oh_look_a_sparkly_thing I get one white egg a day from my hens & started blowing on Ash Wednesday. Though I don't observe lent any longer, I still like the time during it to create at least one egg. I'm going to keep it simple again this year, but have extra just in case those fragile buggers break! @sarina.bowen 1w

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Snowbound chickens make best use of outdoor space to get sunshine. 2w
  •   homewoodnursery Aw, hope they are staying warm. Do they mind the snow? Have no idea how cold-hardy chickens are. 2w
  •   oh_look_a_sparkly_thing They are very cold hardy- their space is protected from the wind which really helps. Because of the extreme cold I'm leaving their light on continuously, which also helps maintain egg production. I don't think they like the snow, & would rather have lots more space to run around, but at least they can get outside in the sun a little bit- I entice them with veggie/fruit scraps & scratch feed. This winter snow in Mass is record setting. @homewoodnursery 2w
  •   leannansi I don't know if this would work for you, but I covered our run with plastic. It works like a greenhouse. They have space that's out of the wind and snow free to scratch around in, and I think it helps warm their coop a bit too. 2w
  •   oh_look_a_sparkly_thing @leannansi if the top of their run were angled I think that would work. It's flat, basically a cube extension of their coop/shed; with 100ish inches of snow this year, it definitely would not have held the weight. This year has been extraordinary for snow & usually the chickens do just fine with "average" snowfall. 2w
  •   leannansi Sure, that makes sense. :-) 1w
  •   homewoodnursery Apparently! Last I heard, they'd taken 7500 truckloads of snow out of Boston and I don't think that was including the most recent amount of snow! Glad your feathered ladies are hanging in there. Would love to have chickens in the garden but there's five cats and a hubs with Post Raising Chickens Stress Disorder. :-) 1w
