ninabagley a grey, low-light morning with poor photo light right here, and I'm in a panic as I head into my appointment here at the cabin with the WNC magazine (western NC) photographer - but I wanted to share with you the two completed (for now) newest pieces, as well as one 15 year old book necklace that I've taken apart and am readying for a newer assembled look. the things that keep playing through my anxious mind are the words of Buddha that I posted last week: make of yourself a light, make of yourself a light. Make.of.yourself.a.light.....

ninabagley backside. there was a monumental mistake that occurred when i torched right through the solid sheet of silver, as well as the heavy metal screen on my soldering tripod. not to be defeated at this point, I decided to let that weathered mistake be a window to a mica-covered old book text from 1887: flow. the engraved words say "I spend countless hours at the river's edge, slipping smooth stones into my pockets to remind me of the water". another mortifying mistake, from one who is meticulous about her wording, is the misspelled word in there. this one's a keeper, for many reasons.

ninabagley yesterday's work. it was scary and excruciating, with a few setbacks and major mistakes that turned into something surprising and beautiful (photo of backside to follow to emphasize that point). I've been wanting to set bezels, and river stones in particular, since 1991. when I first began metalsmithing, I was self taught and clueless about soldering. my brother, gone now 9.5 years, found a used tank and torch set, and I was too terrified of the fiery unknown to use it. five years later, I hired someone for a three day weekend to come from New Mexico to teach me. I live in a verrrry rural area, and there was nowhere to go get the tanks filled, so I procrastinated for many more years. fast forward another 20 years, and the urge to move giant steps forward in my designs forced me to do some research, drive to asheville to have the tanks checked out and filled. that was two months ago, and yesterday I FINALLY got the thing working, sort of, and created my first soldered stone setting. my beloved river supplied the oval stone, which i further carved to flatten the bottom and slant the sides for a snug fitting. after cutting the silver, soldering, drilling, hammering, engraving and polishing, many hours later, I was nearly weeping with relief, tension, exhaustion, and excitement and - surprisingly - pride. this is not quite finished, but... I have made this in memory of my brother Ben, who wholeheartedly believed in me.

  •   ninabagley @noodleandlou awwww Jenn! thank you for this!!! it has been a tricky and sometimes painful process, a little like birthing a baby in some weird, convoluted way. hey, your sweet spoon gal gazes down upon me every time I'm at the kitchen sink, like an angel with her smile .... x️x 1d

ninabagley typical of how I operate as a stubborn artist, I frequently choose to create something in my early learning stages of a particular technique that is complicated and beyond what I ignorantly assume I will be able to conquer. the bezel setting here is a long string of mistakes that I spent two frustrating days (poorly) executing. my goal for this piece? there is a photo shoot scheduled by WNC magazine for this week - photos of my work, the studio, ME , the cabin, the tabletop where I photograph so many of my vignettes. I'm terrified. the house and studio are a mess, I have no pieces of recent work, I'm not comfortable these days with photographs of me. I had wanted to create a couple of special pieces that highlight certain features that are consistent with my designs. I'm too far into this focal piece to abandon it, in spite of the fact that my hammered words may get trimmed off, that the curved back and edges of the stone are unevenly set. it speaks volumes, then, of an artist's process and progress, and I will go ahead and finish the necklace, including a length of the silver chain that took hours to fabricate..... #ninabagleyjewelry

  •   michellesylviaart I love and relate to everything about this. I love this piece and I admire that you are trying this metal smithing. Something I have been wanting to try recently and you have given me the courage. Thank you. ️. The photo shoot will be amazing and you will be beautiful. Embrace the imperfections and treasure the growth in them! 5d
  •   twoee38 I often find the more I worry about perfection , the more I sabotage myself . Sometimes the imagined completed ( paragon of perfection ) is so fixed in my mind that I forget to let the creative process flow. The tight effort to keep from screwing up shows in my work ! Working under pressure always makes it worse! Go outside and play for a while ... 5d
  •   floatingtothetop Oh my sweet friend. All will be well. As for your work, it speaks for itself. As for the cabin, focus on a few of your favorite spots...the porch, for example. You are the one in control. And remember...there is a ton of beauty in simplicity and imperfection. Separate from it, prioritize, and take it a little at a time instead of feeling hit with the tsunami of having to do it all at once. You can do this....and I can't wait to see! 5d
  •   artistelle Oh bless your heart dear Nina 4d
  •   artistelle ^^^.you are such an artist in every way 4d
  •   artistelle ^^^ darn it my stupid thumbs won't work! That perfectionistic (I don't think that's a word!) need runs deep. You want everything to be perfect including you home and work space. I know because I am that way. But I hope you can relax a bit and enjoy this very special time. Truly, I can't imagine any artist having a neat and tidy place...unless they are doing nothing at all. Years ago the newspaper was doing a full page spread on me and I was terrified and worried. But they told me that they wanted to see me at work, mess and all. They wanted to see and photograph what my everyday looked like. I still worried but it turned out great! And I know it's going to for you. 4d
  •   lsmiggen You're so amazing! Your house is that of a busy artist so only have them take photos where you prefer. Where will we get to see the article? Love all of your work! 4d
  •   judyatfadedroses Yes I love all your pieces 4d

  •   mairedodd Lovely and soft. The mountain laurel buds are ripening here. One of the benefits of aging mindfully is celebrating the cycles within cycles of things. The blossoming flowers, vines, shrubs and trees that get their turn then give way to the next. It's a beautiful world made more so through your eyes - 1w

ninabagley ...and this is the look of pre-rip regret, from a dog who loves water but hates baths. a tip from my mother for those times of rolling in stinkiness: a solution of half water/half white vinegar rinsed and scrubbed will remove the scent, then bathe with mild shampoo. #waltergram #pu 1w

ninabagley Yesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star
Then the child moved ten times round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like, when you're older, must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town
And they tell him,
Take your time, it won't be long now
Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true
There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game - Joni Mitchell
