ninabagley the beautiful hand of wisdom and grace: when I was standing next to the trunk of that beautiful old tree, I was very aware of someone a good distance behind me who was watching every move I made. I was afraid she was going to tell me to refrain from touching the tree, or from walking amongst the very old gravestones that were spread around the tree's feet, up under its massive branches. this lovely, petite, elderly white haired woman finally walked up and began smiling and talking to us about the tree, and wanted to make sure that we saw and stood under a beautiful maple tree around the corner whose brilliant orange and red leaves are at their autumn peak. her hands were beautiful, and she didn't mind my taking a photograph. her opal ring is very similar to an old family heirloom that I inherited, and when I inquired if her birthday is in October, she beamed and said yes. our birthdays are four days apart. #kindredspirit #naturegirl 21h

ninabagley beautiful and wise six hundred year old white oak tree in an old cemetery surrounding a church in Basking Ridge, NJ. george Washington is said to have picnicked beneath its massive branches. circumference is a whopping 18 feet (and yes, I stood close and wrapped my arms as snugly as I could to give it a hug). I took my shoes off and walked barefooted around its kind old roots. I wish this photo could convey its massive size. #hellooldfriend #treehugger 21h
  •   kellyhenderson_ How incredible...it is massive and beautiful and reminds me of the talking trees in the Hobbit. When we went to Mt Vernon there were trees there older George Washington...it made the past seem so close and real. Glad you had this incredible experience. xo 17h
  •   kellyhenderson_ (older than) 17h
  •   bibbenluke How incredible is this tree! 16h
  •   floatingtothetop That is just awesome! 14h
  •   klemma921 Just amazing to think that a tree has been around longer than our country ... 14h
  •   wingandaprayerfarm heart warming to me is that they let it stand, no one is saying it needs to come down because of weak limbs, etc., etc. I'm a tree-hugger, too, Nina! 14h
  •   sea_treasure Hello tree, talk to me. (Kath Walker) 13h
  •   ja_renn Outstanding photo, Nina! 11h

ninabagley little back room Amish clothing and supply store in Intercourse, Pennsylvania (correct); the sign says "Attention customers - please respect our coverings when trying them on, please do not have more than 1 covering out of box at a time!". Coverings are the white caps that Amish women wear over their pinned hair. Note the men's black pants for sale. I am fascinated by their customs and chosen lifestyles, and wished we had allowed for more time in beautiful Lancaster County. 5d
  •   minniecar I know u would love to be crafting with the clan 5d
  •   floatingtothetop We drove through there on our way to Maine several years ago and it was my favorite area of all we saw. Also loved Gettysburg..and like you, wish we had allowed more time there. 5d
  •   ja_renn Love your photo! 5d
  •   debbiebailey I never thought that the Amish would have a store where they bought their clothes. I guess I just assumed they made their own. 5d
  •   maggieinsc Where half my moms family came from. Amish are fascinating. 5d
  •   mchabinsky Things have changed a lot within the Amish community. Old order Amish still make their own clothes...and many Amish have a phone in a box at the end of the driveway. Unfortunately we tend to romanticize them because of their seemingly quaint lifestyle but they are willing to cut many corners to make money and their familial relationships are just as complicated as ours. Sometimes more so as victims often feel they have nowhere to go. 4d
