nictinworth If you're at all interested in finding out why these ginger mints mean so much more to me than any medal or trophy, then my race report (finally!) for the @hk100ultra has some interesting insight into how *not* to run a 100km race.

nictinworth After a few runs wearing the HR monitor with my #fenix3 (very comfortable) I am finally getting a handle on understanding training within min/max HR zones.

It's also the first time I'm getting insight and data on my VO2 max levels and recovery times - very cool indeed!

For my age (40-44yrs), a 42-46 score is 'Good' but I would like to see myself moving into the 47-51 score of 'Very Good' before the start of next season.

Sometimes being 'Good' just isn't good enough! -----------------------------//---------------------------- #runner #running #runhappy #trailrunner #trailrunning #datageek #hongkongtrailrunners #hktrailrunner #garmin #gearjunky #watches

  •   nictinworth @johnrunssg Possibly not the best example to use mind 4d
  •   richclarkimages On the racket ball court last night mine would have shown some worrying numbers. 4d
  •   azeanic @johnrunssg I had the 40ish values when I had my Fenix2. Best is to do the real test... I did mine 4 times when I was in school. 4d
  •   serkandasar @ayldzdasar you can get this one for me as a gift ;) 3d
  •   reddogrunning First thing Is disregard the number it spits out regarding vo2. Did you input rhr and mhr? If not the figures are just factory settings. until the watch has an accurate figure for your resting heart rate and your true heart rate max the built in algorithm is just a pie in the sky guess. If Joint Dynamics test your hrm accurately then use that - if they use the non-individualised 220-age formula then you should do a 5 km time trial - on the track. (which all runners should do quite regularly at any rate to get vo2 training paces). 3d
  •   nictinworth @reddogrunning Thanks. It was using rhr and mhr I believe but I'm sure the accuracy meanders. The JD test looks and sounds pretty legit. 2d
  •   reddogrunning Did you input any heart rate data when you set your watch up? If not it is using someone other than you for two pretty key components of the garmin vo2 algorithm. Slight typo in my earlier JD should be testing your mhr not hrm before giving you any vo2 max data. I recommend you ask about that. Do JD use the Bruce protocol? If they do then it is has the highest validity as a cardiac function test. Bonus is the final stage 25% gradient at 10 km/hr has a high 90s% chance of that identifying your true mhr. 2d
  •   nictinworth @reddogrunning Yeah I did. Thanks for the info! 2d

nictinworth As we got to the top of Jardines Lookout on our run yesterday, the clouds parted to show us this view back down into the city and harbour. We both just stood there for a bit to take it all in, no words, just mutual silence and respect for the moment.

nictinworth 29km of wet, muddy, fog and thunder filled awesomeness traversing the island from NW to SE along the Hong Kong Trail. Perfect running weather before the heat returns.

  •   maryhui Hi @nictinworth, would you have recommendations for flat-ish dirt trails in HK on which I can run at a decent pace (<5:00/km)? I know Black's Link & Cecil's Ride, and parts of the HK Trail from Peel Rise to Wanchai Gap. Do you know of others? Planning to run 80-90k/week and hoping to get some soft surfaces at least for my recover runs. Many thanks!! 1w
  •   nictinworth @maryhui Hi Mary - yes, many! HK Trail section from Lung Fu Shan to Pokfulam Reservoir Road is a good one. PM me an email and I will send you some links. 1w
  •   maryhui Thanks, have PM'd! 1w

nictinworth Moody and wet weekend in #hongkong. After narrowly missing getting blitzed by lightning on the hills of Ma On Shan yesterday (so close that I could feel the heat and all my hair stood up!) I thought it best to keep it simple on a follow up run today. Had a serious amount of fun running through torrents of water and rain. Soggy shoes be damned, there's nothing more fun than splashing around wet trails.

  •   nictinworth @piratetb I dunno about warrior style dude, but if it hadn't have been raining hard I would have been embarrassingly wet in my groinal area 2w

nictinworth Took my new @garminofficial Fenix 3 for a spin tonight on some hill repeats. Actually in love with the UI. Picked satellites up in less than a minute - incredibly fast. Will customise the activity screen options tonight, but so far bloody impressed.

  •   nictinworth @garmin I plan to! My original fenix gave up the ghost last week so this was a natural replacement for it 😬 2w
  •   nictinworth @itsjustyu I know right? Still staring at the packaging 2w
  •   upaflash You get (or buy) what you deserve 😎 got it myself and is happy as a puppy 2w
  •   walshr10 Very nice. Will be interested to see it on your wrist if you ever take it outing the box ;) #suunto all the way for me though 2w
  •   johnescapades Agreed - looks like they trying to take on #Suunto's updated superior design - Garmin's satellite GPS rocks but in my experience they generally lack end user interface and design... True for Garmin's Sat Nav systems too! 2w
  •   richclarkimages Definitely more of a looker than former models. 1w

nictinworth Hong Kong is a high density concrete jungle, where over 7m people live in just 426sq miles. Land is scarce, with it being basically a rock in the middle of the South a China Sea, so developers build up, up and up! Wherever you go on the island, however deep into the bush you get, you're never really too far from 'civilisation'. Brendan and I doing our very best to lose sight of it yesterday in some shiggy around Mt Parker.

nictinworth Goodbye my lovely, loyal companion for the past 11 years. We climbed mountains, ran trails and conquered worlds together, from Vail to Denver to Hong Kong. Everywhere you went people smiled. When nobody else was there for me, you always were, with a face lick and bed hugs. I'll never forget you, or your wonderful love. Thank you for so many wonderful memories. You're the best. ️ "Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. nictinworth Team Scotland, 'Fur Freedom!' - winners of the best national dress category - are all smiles at the finish of yesterday's 'Country of Origin' race. 55 teams of 3 running under their national flag covered 30km of tasty Lantau trail, the first in just under 5 hours and the last in just over 9. Waiting at the finish line to see them all come in was brilliant. Such a great atmosphere, with no dramas and pretty smooth the whole day.
Had more than a few people tell me it was the best marked course they had ever run. Of course it was, I'm a hasher! Can't wait for next year where I can put some excellent feedback and learnings to good use.

nictinworth An incredibly peaceful evening marking the course for my foray into race directing with tomorrow's Country of Origin run on Lantau. We took some time out to stop at the big boulders on Lo Fu Tau, switch our headlamps off, and stare into the darkness in silence. Good for the soul. Excited about tomorrow. What started as a small community based training run for 12 teams of 3 has grown to over 60!
